Maybach Music Group

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

Though I think I'd be fine with 18 months of the perenially whatever-to-excellent Wu-Tang output

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

over any of this

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah... i think black hippy might take this but between ross, meek and gunplay, i'd def take MMG

then for me it would be a tie b/w black hippy (i'm only really a kendrick stan, think everyone else is okay to alright) and young money (interested enough in drake & nicki to endure the rest)

my darkhorse pick would be asap mob, interested in the rest of those dudes enough and i still have some hope that rocky's studio album might be good if he gets himself out of the internet rap ghetto by working with dudes like hit boy and swizz beatz

rest of these are kinda irrelevant... good music can fuck off the most, obv

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 April 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

where do Curren$y and Big K.R.I.T. fall here I'm not sure

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it shortchanges some artists... i tried to avoid big umbrellas like Def Jam or w/e while also sticking to groups that have real affiliations, and aren't just connected by the fans or press they share or being in the same city

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 April 2012 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

who's on bad boy now?
man i'm so out of touch w/rap now days

Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

it's been awhile since there's been a whole gang crew of guys I thought were good. Black Hippy and Odd Future have like 1 or 2 guys (at the most) that I'm interested in. 40's got Sick-Wid-It but it's not like the other artists really churn out a ton of stuff. K.R.I.T. seems kinda in his own post-Organized Noize universe. And Curren$y's great but I don't really give a shit about his other Jet Life buddies.

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

I know LOL BACKPACKER HERB GO ROCK SOME MISHKA HIPSTER FUCK YOU GO LISTEN TO PIGEON JOHN SOFT SERVE FUCK LMFROL

But whatever you call the El-P/Danny Brown/Das Racist/Action Bronson/Mr. MFKN eXquire/Despot crew is making probably the most consistently enjoyable rap right now as far as crews are concerned

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

Das Racist is some of the worst rapping I've ever heard

Bronson = eh you know what I'm gonna say here...

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

at some point this year das racist/heems totally clicked for me.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't heard the latest but previous efforts were like sub-Run DMC in the rhyme-scheme department

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

i literally stifled a laugh when i scrolled down to A$ap Mob

some dude, Friday, 13 April 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

xpost, i don't even LIKE old Das Racist mixtapes but am fully comfortable telling you, once again, you opinions on rap music are misinformed and ultimately less than worthless

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know of any rappers I enjoy among this list

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

oh nm this is a dope song

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

lol whiney. keep it real youngster

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

LOL @ youngster. Please, dogg, I was listening to rap music when most of the goons were playing on their little league teams

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

dunno how anything else on this list is arguable over black hippy, unless you're a 12-yr-old odd future stan swagging the fuck out and burning shit and being radical

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

so has there been some stratospheric leap forward from Das Racist's old mixtapes that I'm missing or what? Cuz I liked their production aesthetic it was just all the sub-Geezer Butler verses/rhyming multiple variations on the same word/Hahahaha JK-style lyrics that really grated.

xp

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

no grand hustle? young dro, killer mike, trae tha truth all positive points. b.o.b a negative. and there's iggy azalea who is...something or other

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

I gotta do some catchin up w Killer Mike, thx for reminding me

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

"big beast" was terrific from this year, haven't heard anything else that may have emerged from the album yet

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

I think the general Bay Area axis or Livewire if we have to stick to a real label would be my real answer

So Arabian Spruce (Whitey on the Moon), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

real real

So Arabian Spruce (Whitey on the Moon), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

"rhyming multiple variations on the same word"

yeah, this is really more accurately descirbed as "sub-Run DMC in the rhyme-scheme department" instead of "post-Dipset"

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

whats the current state of brick squad didnt u guys love them

lag∞n, Friday, 13 April 2012 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

"sub-Run DMC in the rhyme-scheme department" instead of "post-Dipset"

lol these things are not mutually exclusive

you didn't answer my question

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

or mine!

lag∞n, Friday, 13 April 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

god damn it

lag∞n, Friday, 13 April 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

lag∞n, the gods of ilx are fickle indeed

Whiney is very correct about the El-P/Danny Brown/eXquire/Bronson/DR/Despot(/Big Baby Gandhi/Lakutis?) axis. if they had a name they would be on here and would get my vote.

caulk the wagon and float it, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

any of these get played at the ballpark?

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

yea theres like maybe 1 act i like in each cru. i might take oddfuture strictly cuz earl over the next 18 months is unmissable shit, or at least has the potential 2 be

johnny crunch, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

or else ill just vote 'other' and it means ill only listen 2 lil b

johnny crunch, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

Fiend, motherfucker. (Altho otm about the rest of them obv.)

Black Hippy have made the most music I like recently, but I might take MMG just for sheer variety (as long as I don't have to listen to Whale).

The Reverend, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the idea of voting for the next 6 Wale R&B singles is the main thing keeping me from being sure whether to vote for MMG

some dude, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

But whatever you call the El-P/Danny Brown/Das Racist/Action Bronson/Mr. MFKN eXquire/Despot crew is making probably the most consistently enjoyable rap right now as far as crews are concerned

i'm biased obv but Los is by far the only guy on Bad Boy worth really giving a shit about, hopefully they'll give him an actual push soon

some dude, Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

this poll was sorta inspired by ship's young money article, but it sorta emphasizes that there's no real bulletproof crew out there right now

J0rdan S., Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:15 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i forgot about los

J0rdan S., Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:15 (thirteen years ago)

they're mostly such weird hodge podges of different people from different cities or whatever. not into odd future or lol a$ap mob but rap crews that are people who grew up together are generally so much cooler than all these industry marriages of convenience.

some dude, Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

who's the hook singer on "peso," the guy from the shins or something? is he in a$ap mob?

some dude, Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

it's the white girl that says the n-word in the the "purple swag" video

Young Money is pretty bulletproof right now, certainly commercially

Frog File Killie (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i mean it seems like Ross just wanted to build up a bankable roster but knew Triple C's wasn't really popping off so he just threw a few darts at the XXL Freshman issue covers. (xpost)

some dude, Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

well yeah, i guess i meant critically

i would start a tumblr that aggregates Whiney's potshots at pitchfork but it'd sorta be a full time job

caulk the wagon and float it, Saturday, 14 April 2012 06:51 (thirteen years ago)

Agreed with some dude, the whole idea of a ”crew” from different cities and all different ages and styles is weird to me

It feels more like d generation x or nwo from wrestling than an actual crew

Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 14 April 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

more of a team than a crew really

lag∞n, Saturday, 14 April 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

some dude, Saturday, 14 April 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

mmg, black hippy are pretty much the only ones here

disappointed in jordan for including asap mob, then going so far as to call them a 'dark horse.' ask ppl about their personalities & its like, um, one of them is really into streetwear...

but GBE are more promising than most of these

kevin gates is on young money now so that's a plus.

sisilafami, Sunday, 15 April 2012 11:36 (thirteen years ago)

worst crews are good music, roc nation, & shady

sisilafami, Sunday, 15 April 2012 11:37 (thirteen years ago)

MMG.

I am occasionally half curious about all the Das Racist-related stuff because descriptions often make it sound intriguing, but then it seems the rappers always are mostly unlistenable - e.g. big baby gandhi's new mixtape.

Tim F, Sunday, 15 April 2012 11:43 (thirteen years ago)

das racist were the worst when they came out with that fucking novelty song two years ago and they continue to be the worst

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 15 April 2012 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

who's actually good on mmg besides meek mill though? teedra but i'm assuming r&b singers don't count in this poll. is reema major signed to them yet? smh @ anyone repping for mmg on the basis of rawse and whale

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 15 April 2012 11:49 (thirteen years ago)

DON LOGAN aka GUNPLAY

yeah me too but considering the quality of the other acts listed, lol shady records, idk why you'd avoid underground chi rap

id also take Livewire over more than a few of these

man down (D-40), Sunday, 15 April 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

underground bay rap but its also still better than shady records roster

man down (D-40), Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

Bad Boy's roster would seem pretty good if the new guys had a relevant A-list rapper to rally around of instead of just Diddy, as it is it feels like kind of a rudderless assortment of would-be B-listers

some dude, Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

some dude, Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:41 (thirteen years ago)

No deej but Odd Future is bigger than ever, breh. I'm at Coachella and the tent to see Odd Future's Frank Ocean was bulging out of every side until you couldn't see or hear him. Don't assume "the world" stopped caring just because Ryan had Larry Fitzmaurice stand down on liveblogging Tyler's Twitter feed.

azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:41 (thirteen years ago)

the phrase "how much the world has ceased to give a fuck about odd future" doesn't actually state how much that is or that it's a lot. just that it has happened to some degree.

some dude, Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:45 (thirteen years ago)

wait theres still a coachella????

Lamp, Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:46 (thirteen years ago)

also frank ocean as a solo artist is kind of a different kettle of fish, at least as far as the 'rap crews' thread goes

some dude, Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)
