For me, this is most definitely "Vapors," the music video mix that they would play on Yo! in the '80s with the "Papa Don't Take No Mess" horn sample... Close second is "Toilet Stool Rap" which was coincidentally b/w "Busy Doing Nothing," probably the best double sided single this side of "Penny Lane" bw/ "Strawberry Fields Forever" fuiud

azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:37 (thirteen years ago)

voted for "make the music"

what does tune-yards have to do with anything? they covered "just a friend"?

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

just shorthand for ppl who only know "just a friend" in the biz oeuvre, breh

azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

that's...weird

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:45 (thirteen years ago)

like, seriously, do you feel some obligation to be incoherent because that's your rep now?

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

Yes it's totally weird not to be able to talk about "All Samples Cleared" with corny indie rock fans. YOU GOT ME

azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

that's clearly not what i meant. doing the poll w/o "Just A Friend" is prob a good idea. (xpost)

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

like, seriously, do you feel some obligation to be incoherent because that's your rep now?

otm

this is between Make The Music, Nobody Beats and Vapors obv. Maybe should be Nobody to rep the ~classic lineup~ inc Kane.

"just a friend" excluded to weed at all the lurker herbs and tUne-YaRds fans. True rap heads only.

I know you have this nervous tic but I just had to call you out on your hard posing here. I was at a Public Enemy show in 1989 - at the Palace, now the Avalon, in Hollywood - when the DJ spun "Just A Friend." know what the people who sang along gleefully, i.e. everybody in the building, weren't? "lurker herbs." Christ it must be exhausting to be completely incapable of just enjoying the music you enjoy instead of constantly, hourly, be worrying about whether somebody who likes music you don't like is also enjoying it

between "Vapors" and "Something For the Radio" in the remainder but jeez wtf everybody who loved rap in '89 loved just a friend...son

Masonic Butt (Lamp), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

The poll is way more interesting without JAF, regardless of the reasons. xp

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 03:53 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I can concede that but dude should be straight about it - "I'm leaving this one off because it's the most popular Biz Markie song and will win" not "because ~real rap heads~ wouldn't vote 'just a friend'" which is a laughable bullshit claim

anyway here's the vapors video this song was always great

That sounds awesome, but since 1989 and especially in the past 15 years, it's been commercialized to the point where the song is probably bigger than Biz himself.. The context surrounding it is a lot different now than when it was fresh.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:18 (thirteen years ago)

TBH, I find more randoms know "Vapors" than "Just A Friend" these days due to Grand Theft Auto.

Voting for "Make The Music With Your Mouth, tUne-YaRdsBiz".

etc, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:45 (thirteen years ago)

There's no way "Vapors" gets played at bar mitzvah's more often than "Just A Friend."

billstevejim, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:50 (thirteen years ago)

man biz must hate that, having real rap shit for rap heads like "just a friend" commercialized so

in fairness to some dude, it is a tragedy of high order that now when you think of Biz Markie literally the first thing you think is "oh no Tuneyards" + I'd wager on the evidence this is true with a lot of good music for you - that literally the first thing you think about it is OH NOE DO THE INDIES LIKE IT WHAT IF THEY DO??

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

how i babelfish it down to an extent
- whiney sees himself as a hipster version of ilx poster usic
- he considers some dude's posting itt as getting more and more butthurt
- refers to some dude as "Roomrunner", an obscure baltimore band reference
- "sub-Onion right to enjoy every piece of pop culture" - apparently some dude is guilty of something the Onion is notorious for i.e. enjoying all pop culture
- "garbussy" - 'garbagey' combined with something that probably refers to something else, some kind of "trending topic" perhaps

whiney, how'd i do?

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:51 (thirteen years ago)

a single is something that's eligible for the singles chart imo. I don't think a flexi is, as you're not buying the record, you're buying the magazine & you get the flexi with it. a flexi is its own thing. there's disparate us/uk rules that muddy the waters (your single is ineligible for the charts in the UK if it has more than one song per side) but I think "released as a standalone 7" is a fair enough rule for "single"
