― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
It's better than the last one but currently lagging behind Bong's new album in the Yoga metal stakes.
― Conan The Asshander (Doran), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)
how have you heard it
― lebron traveled (am0n), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)
I'm writing about it for my website and the dude from Pelican emailed it to me.
― Conan The Asshander (Doran), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)
how long are the tunes? i like the idea of 5 looooong songs on a double vinyl...
― Talcum Mucker, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)
cant wait!!
― diamonddave85, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)
produced by albini again im guessing?
― diamonddave85, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)
have to admit that for me it's starting to feel like they're ploughing the same furrow, not necessarily any deeper this time
― the late great, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 22:10 (thirteen years ago)
so their theme... needs more variations?
― lebron traveled (am0n), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)
No, I think variation has proved a partial downfall.
Between Pilgrimage and God Is Good they changed drummers and had a stylistic overhaul. Emil Amos could hardly be more different to Chris Hakius and the switch between an implicit spirituality and an explicit new age direction hasn't really worked. The new album is slightly better but they're still miles away from making anything as good as Pilgrimage or the Conference Of Birds again.
― Conan The Asshander (Doran), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)
id say i'm hoping for something decent, but unless hakius rejoin the band they're never reaching those heights again
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)
i hear you on the difference between hakius and amos - the distinction between implicit and explicit spirituality is a good way to put it
― the late great, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)
i think i will save the money on the CD and maybe buy a paperback book about byzantine art to look at while i listen to the last four albums
― the late great, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)
doran otm. hakius-free om is not for me.
― yuppie bullshit chocolate blogbait (contenderizer), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)
free hakius

maybe if amos grows a sick beard it'll help
― the late great, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)
i like chris' drumming way better. watching recent live videos of them seems like emil overdoes it with the crash cymbals

disappointing on first impression, wish the drums would hit harder
― deadcandace (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago)
the production makes it sound like an om cover band or something >:O
― am0n, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago)
I kind of expected them to change the production style (how much can you really change the musical side without it not being Om?), but it's a little too clean for my taste.

― adderall cannonby (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 22 June 2012 05:45 (twelve years ago)
I wish these guys could've played with Alice Coltrane. I'm going to sit here and imagine them playing something along the lines of "Om Namah Sivaya" if that's cool with everybody.
― adderall cannonby (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 24 June 2012 10:45 (twelve years ago)
this is not what I was hoping for.

Tomorrow: OM at the Temple of DendurThis will be a tough one to beat. Tomorrow, the mighty drone metal trio OM (Al Cisneros of Sleep, Emil Amos of Grails, and Robert Lowe of Lichens) performs a site-specific re-imagining in the Temple of Dendur of their work "At Giza" -- not coincidentally, the site of the temple's original construction, in the year of 15 friggin' B.C. This show is thoroughly sold out, and co-presented once again with our friends at Met Museum Presents. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the show will begin promptly at 7pm.
couldn't commit when I first heard about it ... it sold out quick.
― dmr, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:05 (eleven years ago)
i saw them last year and they were great, the trio lineup seemed to have gelled nicely and robert was fun to watch
― am0n, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:28 (eleven years ago)
yes! definitely enjoy them a lot more live now they're a three piece.
― Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago)
rob lowe is playing with those guys now? that's rad.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago)
yeah robert kinda stole the show when I saw them!!!
that performance sounds incredible - "At Giza" is still my favorite recording of theirs
― crüt, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:37 (eleven years ago)
what is he playing onstage?
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:38 (eleven years ago)
synths and vocals iirc - he might have had some wind instrument too but it was hard for me to see
― crüt, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:39 (eleven years ago)

This is where they'll be playing.
― dmr, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago)
oops
somewhat surprised they allow shows there (wouldn't some pieces rattle off??) but Liars already did one earlier and the temple didn't fall down I guess
― dmr, Thursday, 18 July 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago)
he also controlled the electric shruti box when i saw em a few years back

yikes! stay hydrated man.
― dmr, Friday, 19 July 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago)
been listening to a lot of om lately. i kind of jumped off the bus after hakius left and barely gave the last two albums more than one listen or so, but i've come around to them! they are good! i am now down with these new directions. they are now a very different band from the first three albums, and i just LOVE those first three albums but i am feeling very open to the new levels of stoner mysticism in god is good' and 'advaitic songs'. also when the heaviness hits it is just as hard, the quietness of the rest of the music makes the heavy parts stand out a lot
― marcos, Monday, 2 February 2015 17:23 (ten years ago)
lichens guy opened for boredoms one time and I really liked his deal. Om has been a mixed bag for me but I'd like to hear this latest lineup.
― a drug by the name of WORLD WITHOUT END (Jon Lewis), Monday, 2 February 2015 20:08 (ten years ago)
i dig lichens, i know plenty of people don't and have a lot of things to say about his live show but i like what he does a lot
― marcos, Monday, 2 February 2015 20:12 (ten years ago)
it was like one man band medieval polyphony/muezzinism, i thought it was great.
(have not heard him on record)
― a drug by the name of WORLD WITHOUT END (Jon Lewis), Monday, 2 February 2015 20:23 (ten years ago)
He's a good fit for Om. Expands the palette a bit by adding that Muezzin counterpoint to Cisnero's low register vocals. Should get Sir Richard Bishop in the mix and just go full arab stoner freakfest mysticism.
― Tomás Piñon (Ryan), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)
arab stoner freakfest mysticism.
would love this so much
― marcos, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 19:06 (ten years ago)
it's kind of been all OM all the time for me the past couple days
― marcos, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 19:07 (ten years ago)
something about the cadence of cisneros' chants are just very hypnotic and pull me in deeply
still think pilgrimage is the peak of this band but god is good is very close to the others in quality
― marcos, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 19:08 (ten years ago)
The dubplate remix eps were excellent too.
― rem remrum (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 19:10 (ten years ago)
cisneros has talked about the "endless riff in his head" and how all the albums are a piece together and he wishes they could record it all at once. makes total sense to me, and while the last two albums were disappointments for me at first, a few years later and now hearing them together with the others as part of single whole and makes me appreciate them a lot more.
― marcos, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 19:15 (ten years ago)
btw is there anyone else doing this hypnotic raga metal kind of thing?
Not sure, you could try Merkabah? Not quite the same thing.. more free jazz metal
― rem remrum (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 21:51 (ten years ago)
Yob, particularly "Clearing the Path to Ascend" and "Atma". Sort of a combination of Om and Neurosis.
Fungal Abyss, a side project of Lesbian, do some very heavy psych metal that dips into a raga/space rock sound. Not as similar a sonic palette as Yob, but I get the same vibe.
― Tomás Piñon (Ryan), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 23:23 (ten years ago)
Finally picked up Advaitic... I don't know. The strings don't really accomplish much. Haqq Al Yaqin sounds like some goofy ass music from a 1970s kids show about pyramids or something. Which would be cool! But this is Om!
― bearded flack trickster god (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 18 March 2016 12:38 (nine years ago)
I still think this band peaked with the first two LPs but they're still a band I always have time for. They never don't sound good to me, if that makes any sense. Like, I'm always up for hearing Om.
― Wimmels, Friday, 18 March 2016 16:19 (nine years ago)
me too
― marcos, Friday, 18 March 2016 16:22 (nine years ago)
the advaitic stuff worked better live
