No, I think variation has proved a partial downfall.

Between Pilgrimage and God Is Good they changed drummers and had a stylistic overhaul. Emil Amos could hardly be more different to Chris Hakius and the switch between an implicit spirituality and an explicit new age direction hasn't really worked. The new album is slightly better but they're still miles away from making anything as good as Pilgrimage or the Conference Of Birds again.

id say i'm hoping for something decent, but unless hakius rejoin the band they're never reaching those heights again

i hear you on the difference between hakius and amos - the distinction between implicit and explicit spirituality is a good way to put it

i think i will save the money on the CD and maybe buy a paperback book about byzantine art to look at while i listen to the last four albums

disappointing on first impression, wish the drums would hit harder

the production makes it sound like an om cover band or something >:O

I kind of expected them to change the production style (how much can you really change the musical side without it not being Om?), but it's a little too clean for my taste.

I wish these guys could've played with Alice Coltrane. I'm going to sit here and imagine them playing something along the lines of "Om Namah Sivaya" if that's cool with everybody.

Tomorrow: OM at the Temple of Dendur
This will be a tough one to beat. Tomorrow, the mighty drone metal trio OM (Al Cisneros of Sleep, Emil Amos of Grails, and Robert Lowe of Lichens) performs a site-specific re-imagining in the Temple of Dendur of their work "At Giza" -- not coincidentally, the site of the temple's original construction, in the year of 15 friggin' B.C. This show is thoroughly sold out, and co-presented once again with our friends at Met Museum Presents. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the show will begin promptly at 7pm.

couldn't commit when I first heard about it ... it sold out quick.

i saw them last year and they were great, the trio lineup seemed to have gelled nicely and robert was fun to watch

yes! definitely enjoy them a lot more live now they're a three piece.

been listening to a lot of om lately. i kind of jumped off the bus after hakius left and barely gave the last two albums more than one listen or so, but i've come around to them! they are good! i am now down with these new directions. they are now a very different band from the first three albums, and i just LOVE those first three albums but i am feeling very open to the new levels of stoner mysticism in
god is good' and 'advaitic songs'. also when the heaviness hits it is just as hard, the quietness of the rest of the music makes the heavy parts stand out a lot

lichens guy opened for boredoms one time and I really liked his deal. Om has been a mixed bag for me but I'd like to hear this latest lineup.

i dig lichens, i know plenty of people don't and have a lot of things to say about his live show but i like what he does a lot

it was like one man band medieval polyphony/muezzinism, i thought it was great.

He's a good fit for Om. Expands the palette a bit by adding that Muezzin counterpoint to Cisnero's low register vocals. Should get Sir Richard Bishop in the mix and just go full arab stoner freakfest mysticism.

it's kind of been all OM all the time for me the past couple days

something about the cadence of cisneros' chants are just very hypnotic and pull me in deeply

still think pilgrimage is the peak of this band but god is good is very close to the others in quality

The dubplate remix eps were excellent too.

cisneros has talked about the "endless riff in his head" and how all the albums are a piece together and he wishes they could record it all at once. makes total sense to me, and while the last two albums were disappointments for me at first, a few years later and now hearing them together with the others as part of single whole and makes me appreciate them a lot more.

btw is there anyone else doing this hypnotic raga metal kind of thing?

Not sure, you could try Merkabah? Not quite the same thing.. more free jazz metal

Yob, particularly "Clearing the Path to Ascend" and "Atma". Sort of a combination of Om and Neurosis.

Fungal Abyss, a side project of Lesbian, do some very heavy psych metal that dips into a raga/space rock sound. Not as similar a sonic palette as Yob, but I get the same vibe.

Finally picked up Advaitic... I don't know. The strings don't really accomplish much. Haqq Al Yaqin sounds like some goofy ass music from a 1970s kids show about pyramids or something. Which would be cool! But this is Om!

I still think this band peaked with the first two LPs but they're still a band I always have time for. They never don't sound good to me, if that makes any sense. Like, I'm always up for hearing Om.
