Electric Light Orchestra : 3 phase electricity

clearly the most ultimate group (c. to quote a fellow ilm'r) of the 70s had several phases.

i suspect ilm is all about the more difficult early years.

still i wish to check, which was the best, you decide.

personally, i often jump from era to era depending on the day of the week, but i have a massive soft spot for time and of course eldorado (the 8 minute instrumental 'eldorado overture' on the recent reissue is worthy of massive love of its own but thats another story) above others making my own choice somewhat difficult.

oh, and, there is the argument that eldorado should be included in phase 1, but hey.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
phase 2 : the golden era - eldorado / face the music / a new world record / out of the blue / discovery 24
phase 1 : the lo-fi prog-esque years - no answer / elo 2 / on the 3rd day 3
phase 3 : electro pop vs beatles love vs 80s production : time / secret messages / balance of power 1

Is Xanadu phase 2 or phase 3?

ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

oh fuck.

ok, proper elo albums only.

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

as per the recent boxset :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Classic-Albums-Collection-Electric-Orchestra/dp/B005LTDPJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334690715&sr=8-1

there have been a few mentions that they could have included the xanadu tracks as extras on these ..

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

phase 2 easy

Darin, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, that was my choice in the end.

apart from the odd track here and there, phase 1 stuff is just too grating (the lack of studio production/budget being a key factor i think as some of the songs work well), despite the fact that roy wood was clearly a mad sonic genius, i think it was only once jeff found his own style that ELO really became worthy.

that said, there is a lot to be said for 'time' which took the blueprint and replaced all the production excess with analogue synths and drum machines.

i would suggest a lot of cold wave artists have heard this and gone 'ooohhhhhh ... ' making this one an album worthy of rediscovery.

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

Xanadu is totally Phase 2, and needs a deluxe reissue along with a blu-ray of the movie, heh.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)

indeed it does - just so we can see the colours of the roller skates more clearly.

love their dorky renn fest years

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

i have no idea what u mean re 'dorky renn fest years'

that said, i suspect its something to do with phase1.

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

phase II easy, but the other two phases have some great stuff. "on the third day" is solid as hell.

xpost :

re that blue bird post :

such a great track, but better than anything off eldorado ?

nah .. despite the connections to the obvious ..

xpost 2 : you see, this is what i mean re the 3rd phase !

some classic electro pop that rarely gets the love ...

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

oh i'm very much a phase 2 kind of dude... but 'on the 3rd' might be nestled right up against 'out of the blue' for my favorite ELO record

it's smdh time in America (will), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

phase 2 is totally going to kill it isn't it?

despite such obviousness of the outcome, i would say that phase 3 is far more relevant to the current radio 2 playlist which as we all know is the the major market factor UK side these days.

i wish i could provide relevant pointers, but in the last few weeks (during which i have done a lot of radio 2 listening) there has been several tracks that have totally proved this point ..

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

phase 2 will destroy (as it should), but i dunno why time doesn't get more love:

hurrah.

time is totally ace in that the songs match the perfection of the golden era, but have a perfect sneaky look to whats coming next

subsequently this one album kills my vote.

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

I've always liked "Four Little Diamonds" even tho it's more or less a retread of "Don't Bring Me Down"

Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

btw.

have wanted to do this poll for ages, but thought ilm was too full of elo hatred.

irrespective of the phase, i'm just glad to see others sharing the love

mark e, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

Christ, I'm going to have to create two more accounts so I can vote three times. Add in Wilburys/Armchair Theatre/Zoom as phase 4 and I'll vote four times.

Rumor has it that he's working on a album of covers/standards; the only song title mentioned was "Beyond the Sea." I'd be worried, but the covers of "September Song" and "Stormy Weather" on Armchair Theatre were nicely Lynne-ified, so I'm not expecting this will be some Great American Songbook desperation move.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 04:27 (thirteen years ago)

I liked the phase 1 singles best (at the time), caught up with the first 2 lps about 2 years ago was massively disappointed.

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:42 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, and the thread title would make for a perfect box set

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:43 (thirteen years ago)

I think the first ever review I wrote was of Time. I said it was the best album ever, ha ha. I mean, who else had a robot voice in the intro? I think only one friend read it, but he bought the album, so success!

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 19 April 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

A friend's band from college covered Time in its entirety back in '91. I should see if I can find that sucker.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 19 April 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

The music is reversible, but...

Roy Wood was always better with singles than albums

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Friday, 20 April 2012 12:16 (thirteen years ago)

It wasn't that though.

I love Roy's "Wizzard Brew" and "Shazam" albums, but.

Mark G, Friday, 20 April 2012 12:24 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, well you know what I mean, over-eggs the pudding somewhat over the course of an album, ol' Roy

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Friday, 20 April 2012 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

More eggs is good eggs sometimes.

I managed to track down a 7" of

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDwtOl3zTSI

recently. Now I just know that this must have had a Roy guide vocal, because she's matched his mannerisms perfectly...

Mark G, Friday, 20 April 2012 12:27 (thirteen years ago)

... Carl Wayne used to do that to sometimes too. Got to say, he had an impressive list of girlfriends in the 70s for a hairy weirdo.

xcuxk otm, "calling america" is great

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 00:28 (thirteen years ago)

and more than a little cloying, but...

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

not exactly a surprise result.

which then begs the question why do emi keep re-releasing the harvest era material.

got the 3 cd set a few years back that compiled the first 2 albums/extra etc, with a dreadful quad stereo mix of one of the albums.

now i see they have re-re-released yet another version of the first album with extra dvd.

is there really a demand ..

mark e, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 07:20 (thirteen years ago)

one month passes...

Rumor has it that he's working on a album of covers/standards; the only song title mentioned was "Beyond the Sea." please point me to more info re this.

cant imagine, nor want, jeff doing a sodding rod stewart ..

however, i'm loving the whole idea of 'lynne-ified' cover versions ..

of course i would prefer real strings et al, as opposed to the latest plastic preset ..

doh.

i meant phase 2 of course.

[ and no this was not a sneaky trick to add 2 new answers to this thread .. twas a simple case of an excess of red wine excess ! ]

mark e, Thursday, 4 October 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago)

an interview on radio 2 this afternoon.

a whole night on bbc4.

seems like the bbc are waking up to the majestic elo at last.

not watched the docu, but taped for another night.

suspect the concert is the tony curtis one that i saw way way back ?

mark e, Friday, 5 October 2012 22:00 (twelve years ago)

I watched the concert, it was at Wembley in 1978. It was pretty cool actually. Lots of hits.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 5 October 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago)

is that the one that they perform inside the space ship styled set ?

(and tony curtis introduces them ? )

mark e, Friday, 5 October 2012 22:53 (twelve years ago)

I didn't watch the whole thing so I didn't see Tony Curtis, but yeah it was a space ship thing.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 5 October 2012 22:54 (twelve years ago)

ahh .. i saw that back in the early 80s on betamax ..

fucking brilliant ..

glad i taped it.
