When I Was a Caveman - Chris Smither

... or maybe I'm thinking of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" .. I always got those two songs (Wichita) confused...

Campbell's also got the lilting "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife"... There's a Dolly Parton song about her love coming down from Dover, and then she has a stillborn baby... the baby seems to know the guy is never coming down, and decides to be born dead rather than live without a father... anybody know this song?

If you like Glen Cambell's lounge & western, check out Kenny Roger's old band First Edition, with the song "Ruby"... such a great tune.

Glen and Jimmy's magnificent "Where's The Playground Susie?" is also in this bag - as is 'MacArthur Park' I suppose - not to mention a lot of Scott Walker...

Dolly's song is "Down From Dover" from Little Sparrow. Well worth picking up, better than her current release.

"Cattle & Cane" by the Go-Betweens.

Mark P - I think what you want is some kind of Jimmy Webb compi. that would give you all his top tunes. You know, Wichita Linesman, by the time I get to Phoenix, Galveston, and Macarthur Park. and many more.

I have fantastic fantastic comp on Débutante records from 97/98 which has all these and more, is called And Someone Left The Cake Out In The Rain. Not sure how easily obtainable it is, but you should be able to find it somewhere on interweb.

"Wichita Linesman"? I knew it! It was a rugby song all this time...

But seriously, folks: Try Lee Hazlewood, you'll never look back. And Van Dyke Parks, oh yeah.

Ever hear These Animal Men's cover of "Wichita Lineman"? It's brilliant.

(kinda off-topic) Has anyone heard Astralwerks' Lee Hazlewood tribute album? More details here. Interesting listen.

quite like scott walker's "we had it all" as well.

From around the same time, these hit singles all had a similar sound, plus gobs of melodrama:
"Morning Girl" by Neon Philharmonic
"The Worst That Could Happen" by Brooklyn Bridge
"Woman Woman" by the Union Gap

Witchita Lineman is my favorite song of all time. One time while I was in a pub in London I programed it into a jukebox 6 times in a row. Finley Quay was there and not a single person noticed the repetition or was thankful for it. Bastards!

Galveston is great. I collect versions of Witchita Lineman. Jim Nabors "Gomer Pyle" version is up there.

Although cheesier, Gordon Lightfoot's "If you Could Read My Mind" is similiar to WL.

You have to get The Fifth Dimension's _The Magic Garden_ - it's a Jimmy Webb concept album about a poor hippie guy who has an ill-fated relationship with the daughter of a wealthy man. It's one of my favorite albums, and has a number of 'show-stoppers' in the 'Wichita Lineman' vein.

Oh, and 'Galveston' is great, too, and very much in the vein of 'Lineman'.
