i really like short little solos that do surprising things with texture right now

such as
Smashing Punkins - Cherub Rock
XTC - Reel to Reel
Fripp's solo on St. Elmo's Fire

and a classic solo that's recently had a resurgence in my life is Nels Cline's devastating guitar explosion on the version of "Ashes of American Flags" from Kicking Television

I was thinking about the ending of Lloyd Cole/Commotions' "Forest Fire" yesterday.

i kinda hate that bit of "Forest Fire", it's much too much for me

My favorites are the ones I can sing along to! I try not to do this around people. Usually I fail at that.

Evan, Friday, 20 April 2012 15:52 (thirteen years ago)

i always try to sing along to the Let It Be guitar solo and fail hard

Neil Hagerty's solo for Small Thief from Royal Trux's Pound for Pound record.

sknybrg, Friday, 20 April 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

listening to road to ruin yesterday, "don't come close" has some lovely guitar parts. but there's one wee little part where Johnny hits 3 or 4 notes and considering it's ramones it could be called a "solo" but either way they're perfect notes. and that record sure has a lot of sonic variety for just a punk group

Elliot Easton on "It's All I Can Do"

Chris Bruce or Julian Coryell, dunno, on Aimee Mann's "Dear John"

the Let It Be solo (the one on the official release) is a thing of beauty

Karl Precoda rules! Love "Halloween".

ditto on the "Gypsy" solo, its goofy simplicity makes me lol but i love it nonetheless

1. Maggot Brain - Eddie Hazel
1.5 Maggot Brain - Michael Hampton
4.75 Maggot Brain - J.Mascis on Mike Watt's Ballhog or Tugboat

Lindsey B - the last 5 minutes of "I'm so Afraid" from the Live at Bass Performance Hall-record.

Mule, Monday, 23 April 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

Woah yeah, that's ridiculous. Lindsey's so great - cosign on Gypsy, and I love his gentle countryish solos on Landslide and Over & Over.

"Maggot Brain" is of course an all timer. For me, I get a charge out of Mascis's solo on "The Lung" every time, super lyrical and kickass.

that's actually pretty great. but the slow walk down the platform/gross sex faces are a big turnoff

caulk the wagon and float it, Thursday, 26 April 2012 11:20 (thirteen years ago)

One that I heard on the IPod while working out today is Radio Birdman's "New Race" I assume its Denis Tek. That's an unhinged solo.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Thursday, 26 April 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

"When You Smile" by Precoda/Dream Syndicate or maybe "The Big Ship" by Fripp/Eno.
