winner to have an 80% margin, I reckons.

Mark G, Friday, 27 April 2012 09:56 (thirteen years ago)

Gold too susceptible to 'ironic' karaoke renditions. DYWM overplayed. ABC it is.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 27 April 2012 10:06 (thirteen years ago)

Voted Human League. Not that it affected my choice at all but the other two songs weren't even the biggest songs on their respective albums.

btw didn't i braek ur heart (NickB), Friday, 27 April 2012 10:13 (thirteen years ago)

ABC. Have to say I'd take 'The Look of Love' over 'Poison Arrow' and 'Love Action' over 'DYWM'. I've never really liked Spandau Ballet apart from one or two songs.

THESE ARE THE CHOICES

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Friday, 27 April 2012 10:23 (thirteen years ago)

Don't You Want Me. This isn't even close.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 27 April 2012 10:32 (thirteen years ago)

YOU'RE IN-DESTRUCT-IIIBLLLLE

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 April 2012 11:08 (thirteen years ago)

Poison Arrow for me but they're all great. It's my favourite of the singles from Lexicon but Date Stamp has always been my favourite song on there.

Didn't know until recently that Phill Oakey hated Don't You Want Me and didn't want it to be a single.

'Don't You Want Me', easily.

I've never been a fan of Spandau Ballet, and I admire The Lexicon Of Love as a production 'triumph' (for want of a better term), but it's far from the first album I'd put on if I'm going to listen to something from this era.

Interestingly, Gary Kemp was on the Sky Arts show 'Songbook' a few years back, and he revealed that 'Gold' was his attempt at trying to write something that could be the theme for a James Bond movie.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)

Just realised I hadn't voted. Went for Poison Arrow.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

Gold always reminds me of that Comic Strip 'Three Men In A Car' where the in-car cd starts skipping on 'you're indestructible/you're indestructible/you're indestructible' and they have to smash the stereo to pieces to make it stop.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

"poison arrow" 4 life (and i have done it at karaoke)

Fortunately the stereo WAS destructible, then? :D

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

I have sung "Gold" at karaoke unironically thank you.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 00:34 (thirteen years ago)

"True" was a way bigger hit this side of the pond, but couldn't be easily mistaken for any of the others. Voted for Humang League, obv.

Matt M., Tuesday, 1 May 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

I love "Gold"!

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

Only When You Leave >>>> Gold >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> True

I wonder if Tony Hadley will fellate Bryan Ferry when the the old man finally croaks.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

Poison Arrow narrowly edging Gold with Don't You Want Me a distant 3rd, though it looks like it'll walk this poll. As a song it's not even in the same class as the other two

cosi fan whitford (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 02:52 (thirteen years ago)

Don't You Want Me > Poison Arrow > Gold, but I ended up splitting my vote and giving half a point each to "Souvenir" and "Promised You A Miracle" - I am confident one of those will win

Bit of a leap from 'Gold' to 'Poison Arrow', there! :D

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:47 (thirteen years ago)

Wow! Not what I expected... Was True really bigger in the States than Gold?

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:52 (thirteen years ago)

yes

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

yes

um, wow! hi (crüt), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

I heard it being played as muzak today

crüt, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

"Gold" and "Only When You Leave" are the two other US top forty hits.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

p. sure 'true' is the only spandau ballet i've ever heard

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

me too, until this poll

crüt, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

I first heard 'True' through the sample on 'Set Adrift On Memory Bliss'. 'Gold' is basically THE eighties power anthem in my mind. Much more emblematic than either of the other two.
