The Beastie Boys thread got me thinkin'.

2000 was the last time I put on tape a bunch of songs from CD's I bought because my car then didn't have a player.

Thread also an update of What Was The Last New Cassette You Bought?

Just meant CR-90s and such. I still burn CD's.

i made a mix of my favourite tunes from 2011 a few months back - put the electronic version on soundcloud and them mailed actual tapes of it to any of my friends that wanted one (three of them to be exact)!

Moved to minidisc in about 1998, so probably then. Relied on a load of old favourites and a CD-adaptor cassette thing in the car.

Would probably have been my last year of uni (2002) - I used to make tapes to play on the cheapy cassette/radio we had in the kitchen. I remember one that one had Saint Etienne, Nick Drake and Otis Redding on it. Oh and 'Cold Sweat' by The Sugarcubes.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

A few weeks ago. I only listen to tapes in my car since some asshole yanked the radio antennae and I misplaced the cartridge for my cd player.
I'm an avid cassette listener and compiler.

Last time I made a mixtape was in 2002. I was trying to put together a mix of my favorite Beatles songs and I had a terrible time with sequencing. It was sort of a moment of Beatles backlash for me.

I had made a particularly epic mix for a girlfriend in fall 2000. I used a cheap mixer and did a bunch of layering and crossfades (mostly still with cassettes as sources). It probably sounds worse than I remember it, but it was new ground for me that I never really followed up on, sadly. I had always loved putting bits of dialog or like, weird stuff that I had taped off the tv so I had to run the vcr into the tape deck to record it. And I gave everything away without copying it for myself, so I don't have like, track lists and shit.

Those were fun days, but I had a lot of free time to be doing that kind of stuff back then.

I've made a couple for driving for myself in the last year. I'd found a high-end-in-the-80s Aiwa deck (AD-F990) in a Goodwill for $10 two years ago and only had to clean the heads and replace a decomposed drive belt. I mainly bought it to transfer a stack of tapes I couldn't get rid of (tape-only releases, bootlegs, 4-track stuff, etc.) from years ago to a digital format, but it's been great for taping 45s and other random tracks I have on vinyl to listen to in the car. I haven't made an actual mixtape to give to anyone in about 15 years though.

Just last week I made a mix for a friend I'm visiting this weekend. And I made one a few months ago for my car, which has a tape player. Sadly I hadn't realized how hard it is to get good blank tapes nowadays.

I was surprised to see Best Buy still sells them.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

Walgreens has them in my town but I order them online.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

this is ridiculous, but are those high-bias tapes? I can't even remember now why I think those are better. is this like premium gas and it's all bullshit?

I'm going to be have to 'kind of' make one later on this week. I'm setting the pub quiz, and I'll be selecting tracks for the intros round.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

five months pass...

Pedantic mixtape question: when creating a mix for a particular year, do you allow or disallow a track if it had been released earlier? For example, if one were making tape for 1991, would 'I Wanna Be Adored' be eligible, as it was released as a single that year, or barred since it already appeared on the album in 1989? Or if the single appears that year, but the album proper was released the next, which year would you associate it with more?

Depends if anyone cares

Ah! What did you pick? We set a quiz once, it was lots of fun.

I made one yesterday. For the birthday of a girl I'm seeing. Hadn't made one in years, it's all spotify playlists these days.. It came out pretty good, though somewhat random..

It's a total gray area. Typically, if I was to make a year-specific mix, and the song I wanted to include was released in some format that year, I'd include it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 22:55 (twelve years ago)

I just bought a usb-to-cassette deck specifically so I could make actual mixTAPES again. Finding high bias blanks is a chore these days, it turns out.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago)

the last mixTAPE i made was around 2002. last CD i made was earlier this year.

i made one for ilxor rrrrrrrrrobyn a month ago. think that was the last one i made. i think it was tdk tape? i forget. you'll have to ask her. i only make tape mixes.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 23:51 (twelve years ago)

johnny, i hoard unopened blank tapes that i find at thrift stores. i've found cases of blank tapes before at fleas and thrifts. you gotta keep your eyes peeled.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 23:52 (twelve years ago)

i'm pretty sure if i asked across the street at the stupid cd store they could order me some high bias tapes. they only carry normal bias as do most chain drug stores. i won't make tape mixes on normal bias tapes. i have my standards.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 23:54 (twelve years ago)

TDK SA90!
Awesome skot mixtaaapppe

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 23:59 (twelve years ago)

glad you liked it. making mixes from 45s is fun. i never makes mixes from CDs but i have this metal mix i made years ago from CDs and i play it all the time so i probably should. cuz i never listen to my CDs at home. and i have all kinds of metal promos where i like a song or two but never dig them out and play them.

It's not too late to joinILV mixswap
Both of the batch of mixes I've received came with a few extras, if anyone else wants to sign up?

JacobSanders, Thursday, 18 October 2012 00:13 (twelve years ago)
