scott seward, Friday, 11 May 2012 04:29 (thirteen years ago)

can we just vote now that paste is THE worst name for a magazine ever ever ever? though, strangely, it did fit the content of the magszines i saw...white, sticky, smelly...

scott seward, Friday, 11 May 2012 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

I can think of other things that are white, sticky, and smelly.

Hellhamster 2: Hamster Smashed Face (J3ff T.), Friday, 11 May 2012 04:31 (thirteen years ago)

This ain't that bad is it? It pretty much covers all the real classic logos only one they're missing is Prince maybe... the new ones are definitely not classic and it feels like a forced attempt to fit in.

Vintage Trouble (sometimes abbreviated as VT) is an American soul and rock band. The band formed in Hollywood, California in 2010.[1]

Hellhamster 2: Hamster Smashed Face (J3ff T.), Friday, 11 May 2012 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

Sooooo... is it just me or did they just flat-out steal the logo from Trouble?

until someone carves the deadmaus logo into their forearms and puts it on an album cover this list is NULL AND VOID

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 11 May 2012 06:13 (thirteen years ago)

The Beatles one was never used anywhere until long after they split iirc, aside from on the drumskin. not that that makes any difference but it wasn't ever on an actual record until a crappy hits comp in 1980.

the geezer who made this shoulda done a logo for the actual band too cause that woulda been ace

jesus christ (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 11 May 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, this is shitty. A mix of fonts and logos, without considering the different implications of design, absolutely no commentary (not even to tell you who the band is), a fair few completely boring ones, and some that weren't even used as logos. Well done, Paste, well done.

(Nick, I'd say that the Nirvana face was drawn on enough school-books and printed on t-shirts to be recognisably associated, but I don't think it was ever on any records...)

Flipping through their "list of the day" posts, this is exceptionally pathetic. the rest at least have inane, little "hey this is a movie about dogs that belongs on our 7 Movies About Dogs list" captions.

da croupier, Friday, 11 May 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

The Beatles one was never used anywhere until long after they split iirc, aside from on the drumskin. not that that makes any difference but it wasn't ever on an actual record until a crappy hits comp in 1980.

being displayed on the front of the kick drum is HOW a lot of bang logos became famous ffs, you're saying the logo in the middle of the screen during the ed sullivan performances isn't famous/canonical enough to count?

i don't really understand everyone's beef here, obviously the list is half-assed and could've been done much better, but quibbling that many band logos are just the band's name in a distinctive font is pretty stupid

It's amazing how many of those so-called logos came from much later in the band's career I mean, take the winged Pixies P - that was for the last album! Or the Pink Floyd one listed here - that was from "The Wall." Just a silly charticle.

Are 'logos' and 'insignias' interchangeable? B/c a lot of my favorites are really insignias w/o any text. Blue Oyster Cult for example. They don't have a 'logo' I really care for but their insignia is probably my favorite ever.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

Huskers otoh had a killer logo and a killer insig.

i've never gotten clear about the distinction between font and typeface. and now re: husker du, logo and insignia.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 11 May 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

hey, it turns out that this list of band logos in past magazine is bad and terrible

capt save a pastes up in here

da croupier, Friday, 11 May 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

logo and insignia are roughly interchangeable terms when it comes to this sort of thing. neither has to have text to count. BOC symbol is a classic band logo/insignia.

10. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” – Tom Cruise (contenderizer), Friday, 11 May 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

iirc, the difference between font and typface, refers to the difference between the concrete thing you print with (the font) and the design embodied in it (the typeface)

10. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” – Tom Cruise (contenderizer), Friday, 11 May 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult for example. They don't have a 'logo' I really care for but their insignia is probably my favorite ever.

I mentioned in some BOC thread how I drew one on the blackboard EVERY DAY during high school calculus class!

three years pass...

Band logos are very much a "guy" thing aren't they? There's only two bands in that list (Cramps, ABBA) that aren't all male as far as I can tell. It's hard to think of many co-ed or all-female bands that have a logo. Then judging by the people you see around wearing t-shirts, patches or whatever, it's men that relate to logos for whatever reason. Maybe the music or genres that throw up bands with logos, like punk, metal, techno etc are just more boys clubs than the rest? Or maybe men are just inherently more into this kind of self-branding?

everything, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:18 (nine years ago)
