Records Which EVERYONE Owns

Regardless of whether we like/liked it or not, is there a recording which everyone on ILM owns or has owned? Individual songs count and so do MP3s.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd wager that we couldn't even find a record that everyone has heard (you & your Beatles deficiency is to blame for this one.)

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

It's funny cause it's true: Rumours ...?

Pet Sounds?
Revolver?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

he has heard ONE as i recall and then we can name that one and see who else has it?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I've HEARD nearly all the Beatles records Mark and used to have copies, taped for me by a friend, of several of them. I now only own one.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(WTS) MG?

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't have revolver, pet sounds, or (WTS)MG.

blue monday? surely everyone has this on a compilation somewhere.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Pet Sounds seems a good candidate b/c of the trans-atlantic appeal. Anyone never owned it?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

what is (wts)mg ??

dave k, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never owned any Beatles or Beach Boys outside of Tomorrow Never Knows on mp3.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he means "What's The Story (Morning Glory)" to which, judging by the plentitude of copies in the MVE bargain basement, the word "owned" might be more appropriate than "own."

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"Never Mind The Bollocks"
"Dark Side Of The Moon"
"Thriller"

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

no oasis or beatles for me.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have any of the ones suggested by Siegbran.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

heard sounds doable. someone start a thread.

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

DARK SIDE OF THE MOOON, CHANGESONEBOWIE, LONDON CALLING

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I own absolutely none of those mentioned.

Closest I have to a 'universal' one is probably OK Computer...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

strike off "rumours" and "changesonebowie". "dark side" already went didn't it?

how about...no, i can't think of anything at the mo. 'blue monday' perhaps the best bet so far.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

no to dark side of the moon, changes, london calling, any pistols, any jackson

Alan (Alan), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Individual songs are likely to be much more fruitful.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

LP: Hunky Dory
song: "Heroes"

willem (willem), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I only own the awful re-mix version of "Blue Monday" off of that New Order best of.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok Computer and Pet Sounds are the only ones I have so far.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard, let alone owned Pet Sounds.
I do have "Blue Monday", yes.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

What about HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH? I do not know anyone who does not have a copy in some format of this Belinda Carlisle hit!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

HEY! I am speaking like ANYA!

i wub xander very much (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I have "heaven is a place on earth" stored in my head! (that counts)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i do not know a supermarket that does not have a copy of Belinda's "heaven .."

and i don't hang with or dig to ornette much more than the next guy, but Pet Sounds has bought me close to something stronger than chewing the cud

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i've probably got less records than the average ilm poster, but so far i've got every single one mentioned.

perhaps i am the man in the street.

adam b (adam b), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

re: "heaven is a place on earth". was about to kill that one but realised that the only tape my sister got when she was a kid was 'now 7' and it's on that! it would be quite possible for me to rob it without her noticing. does this count?

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's think of a hyper-anthologized song that also happens to be from a best-selling album -- that should do it. "Good Vibrations," maybe?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to say what jel said.

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have Blue Monday. odd, isn't it?

jon (jon), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

At one point or another, I've owned everything mentioned -- except Dark Side Of the Moon.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 20 September 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

how about Bob Marley's Legend?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell, even I have LEGEND.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have Legend anymore.
what about "loveless"?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Nevermind -- or maybe Thriller?

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 20 September 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd have said Nevermind is a good guess. "The Slim Shady LP" would feature for anyone under 22 as well, I'd wager.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 September 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Stone Roses", maybe?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the 7" single of 'Heaven is a Place On Earth'!

The only ones mentioned so far that I don't have are 'Morning Glory' and 'Dark Side of the Moon'

Has 'Nevermind' been mentioned yet?
'Different Class'? 'Dummy'? 'The Queen is Dead'?

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Has 'Nevermind' been mentioned yet?"

Yes then. It has. I'm tired.

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I sure as hell fucking hope that Legend isn't ILM's common link. I mean, how square can you get??

I don't own "Heaven Is A Place On Earth", couldn't even sing any of it except for the chorus. Don't own "Loveless" or "Thriller", either. Nor "The Slim Shady LP", and I'm 17 (I do own "The Marshall Mathers LP" and "The Eminem Show", tho.) No Portishead or "Different Class" either, sadly.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

No Pet Sounds and No Beatles records.Honest-Not that I don't like the Big B's ,but I hear them enough that I don't feel the need to have my own copies..

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

No Legend; in fact I've never owned a reggae album. "Heaven is a Place on Earth"... are you kidding?

Sean (Sean), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"Brown Sugar"? I'm trying to push the mighty Stones here, folks...

Simon, Friday, 20 September 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The only one I have of those mentioned so far is 'Never Mind The Bollocks'. That's not some kind of defiant Punk statement though.

David (David), Friday, 20 September 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not some kind of defiant Punk statement though.

It wouldn't even be one if you meant it to be. :)

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The only ones so far mentioned that I've never owned are Legend, Nevermind and WTS (MG).

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

beatles records have passed through my collection. as has nevermind. the only records mentioned I still own are blue monday and nevermind.
one of the first 2 suzanne vega lps. I know many many people with those records

simon 803 (simon 803), Friday, 20 September 2002 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i didn't puke this time either, but i heard mr. pet shop boy openly cried when he heard what ["good band that takes orders" minus ian curtis] had dumbed down the latest technology to

from the same band that released tasteless posthumous "limited edition" 12 inches that somehow nevertheless made no. 1, following it up with "[dead head hangover starter]" aka "on the beach" (royalties to mr. shute, nah) etc. etc., designed so that the moment you touched the sleeve it left grubby looking fingerprints, which meant their could be no second-hand market for this wowie zowie new 12 inch thingy

well i hope that morally bankrupt band and their hacienda and their record label are all really well and truly broke, broke, broke, even if their drummer can afford to collect weapons of mass destruction as a hobby -- point your toy at your own "fashionably non-neo-fascist" crew, pleeeaaase (you'll save the world)

which reminds me that the other bit of vinyl for which no second hand market exists is led zeppelin [four symbols], which sold 30 million in a couple of years and might get handed up and down, family member to family member, if you're lucky, which means your granny doesn't know where to hide her copy when the fashion police hit your door

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 21 September 2002 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That has to be the most cryptically entertaining anti-New Order rant I've ever read.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 September 2002 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never owned THRILLER. I did have the first two Eminem albums (and even the D12 disc), but they were all given to me -- and since given away to someone who'd appreciate them more than I. I do have PET SOUNDS, but I think it's deplorably overrated, so it might end up as a coaster shortly. I do have WHAT'S THE STORY MORNING GLORY, LOVELESS and NEVERMIND, although I cannot for the life of me recall the last time I actually played any of them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Go home, everyone - it's Into The Light by Chris de Burgh and y'all know it.

Charlie (Charlie), Saturday, 21 September 2002 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

My anti-New Order rants are anything but cryptic. And I used to have a cassette of Low Life. I make no pretense that the rants are entertaining, though.

I think that it's safe to say that just about every ILMer has at least one (1) Pixies; (2) Cure; (3) Smiths recording.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 September 2002 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i have no smiths at all.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 21 September 2002 07:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no cure, not even a single solitary 7". But I did once. But we're not talking about bands everyone's owned once.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 21 September 2002 07:51 (twenty-three years ago)

And no Pixies here, either...

Daniel_Rf, Saturday, 21 September 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have anything at all by The Stone Roses or Oasis, Portishead, or the Cure in any format whatsoever.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 21 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Never owned A Pixies or a Stone Roses record..never will.

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

"Velvet Underground & Nico" ... "Slanted & Enchanted" ?

aaron m, Sunday, 22 September 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have SLANTED & ENCHANTED......and that's no accident, if ya smell what I'm cookin'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 22 September 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

the only things mentioned here so far that i own are velvet underground and nico, and thriller. what about horses by patti smith? arrival by abba? the best of blondie? highway 61 revisited by dylan? fleetwood mac runours? madonna like a virgin? the stones exile on main street? wire pink flag?

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 22 September 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

don't have the bob dylan, fleetwood mac, madonna, abba, blondie, jacko or the stones

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 22 September 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

'N I don't own the Wire one...

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 22 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone here most have Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.

Well anyone interested in Jazz would.

Geoffrey Balasoglou, Monday, 23 September 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my dad's got it.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"meet the meatls"

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

got that one!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Pet Sounds seems to be the closest one so far.. I don't own any Beatles, Cure or Michael Jackson. My sole Nirvana LP is In Utero.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 23 September 2002 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm bucking a lot of these - I think out of everything mentioned I've owned only "Blue Monday", Dark Side of the Moon, Loveless, and (WTS)MG.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"blue monday" v "loveless", then. FITE.

odds:"blue monday" 1/3
"loveless" 5/2
the draw 5/1.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

it's hilarious how people keep suggesting indie records

zebedee (Jeff W), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

How about: BACK IN BLACK by Ac/Dc?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 September 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone's got 'eat my fuc' by GG.

llenhcs, Monday, 23 September 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah I've got back in black.

appetite for destruction?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

nope, no back in black.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Dare! maybe? And yeah Led Zep 4/New Order rule.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
after the gold rush by neil young , well everybody in the world should beg , borrow or steal this great clasic peice .;

ron kavanagh, Friday, 12 May 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

Automatic for the People!

See, it mentions people, and people like to see their name in print, so I bet everyone has it.

Justin Shumaker (shueytexas), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)
