Today's Supernatural is great. I hope the rest of the album has this sort of energy. They sort of lost it in between Sung Tongs and Feels.
― Moka, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 05:46 (twelve years ago)
He sounds a little like Zinc Alloy era Bolan in parts. I love it!
― wk, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 06:35 (twelve years ago)
sounds good, BUT for a band that more or less reinvent themselves each record - it sounds very familiar. somewhere between Feels and Spirit Theyve Gone
― nostormo, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago)
after being struck by it on my first few listens i'm not so sure now, as a song i like what it's doing but i don't know that the sonic palette they're using is really working for me. a bit of an ugly mush, which is something they've made work before but here the mush doesn't really seem to be attaining any consistency. maybe an album's worth of said ugly mush will indoctrinate me.
― (500) Days of Sodom (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 17:00 (twelve years ago)
as a pre-album sigle - it's probably their worst since 2004
― nostormo, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago)
The 'ugly mush' factor is what's been the problem for their last two albums, but strangely not things like the Fall Be Kind EP which is pretty good, and the last Panda Bear which was acers.
― Quickly, take hold of my hand, asshole! (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:12 (twelve years ago)
Really like Today's Superman on first listen though - not actually too mushy sounding, and I like the fact they seem to be revisiting earlier styles (I hear elements of Sung Tongs in the drumming and also long-ago co-conspirators Black Dice's 'Repo' album in there). Sounds like they're having fun again after having nearly lost themselves in granular fuzz on MPP
― Quickly, take hold of my hand, asshole! (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago)
I did not like that
― dmr, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 19:23 (twelve years ago)

It obviously rules, it was just releases during a low point in their hype cycle so people had to pretend to dislike it.
― Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)
no, a lot of genuine fans were disappointed by this record, nothing to do with hype cycle. probably would've been cool to start hating by strawberry jam anyway
― i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)
I <3 centipede hz a great deal. The criticisms mostly didnt make sense to me bc i still think its at least as "immediately enjoyable" as MPP and has more replay value. I understand ppl have different experiences though... for me this is an important album.
― Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)
i was mad hyped for it and even though i had misgivings on my first listen i thought i'd get over them with repeated listens, but nop, they came to dominate my feelings about it. but that's fine, it happens, i'll eagerly anticipate their next album anyway.

this was the first animal collective album i heard. i always wrote them off as a twee brooklyn deep v-neck/curly mustache band, but this album got me into them. i was actually just listening to this again a couple of days ago.
― Spectrum, Saturday, 7 June 2014 02:44 (eleven years ago)
― Treeship,
I think I"m inclined to agree with this, it seemed like people weren't as ready to receive this as MPP. Their new live album caused me to rethink the kind of band they've been becoming. I guess time will tell, but I wouldn't be surprised if centipede hz ends up being one of the high points of their collective powers.
― rap is dad (it's a boy!), Saturday, 7 November 2015 15:35 (nine years ago)
Hate this band and especially Merriweather Post Pavilion with cringing disgust. But I remember hearing Centipede HZ when I was working in a record store and it sounded great after a couple pot brownies. I mean, I went home and listened to it on Spotify and everything. I considered buying it, even.
― austinato (Austin), Saturday, 7 November 2015 16:55 (nine years ago)
I think the Treeship comment is totally otm. In fact, MPP is one of those records that people might shy away from because of how big it was when it came out. It was definitely part of some kind of zeitgeist, and when that moment was over, it was very much a "morning after" kind of thing. Centipede Hz (which I'd say is more interesting, song-wise, production-wise) was more than unwelcome, it was like being reminded of a particularly embarrassing one night stand.
― Dominique, Saturday, 7 November 2015 17:18 (nine years ago)
i don't think it makes much sense to claim this was just a matter of timing or fatigue. centipede is a sonically challenging record even if you like it (i do) and much less accessible than mpp.
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 7 November 2015 17:28 (nine years ago)
Y'see, the thing about Animal Collective is that I don't think they were much cop to begin with.
― Turrican, Saturday, 7 November 2015 19:13 (nine years ago)
well they're no oasis
― brimstead, Saturday, 7 November 2015 20:17 (nine years ago)
I followed them up through Sung Tones, really fun inventive stuff. Then they sounded like the Arcade Fire for a couple albums and I wrote them off. When MPP came around I couldn't stand it, it was like my ears has moved on to other realms. Person Pitch is GREAT, however, probably my favorite thing of theirs.
― brimstead, Saturday, 7 November 2015 20:18 (nine years ago)
ears has = ears had
as a diehard AC fan (and yeah, not 'AnCo' - that stupid abbreviation that hipster runoff started as a joke and fans actually started using seriously) ... centipede hz sounded overcooked and confused for a long time after it came out. for the first time in *12 years*, the AC made a record that didn't make a near complete break with the past, and it sounded like they were treading water and coming off like a parody of themselves, especially lyrically. but as time goes on, i like it more and more. it was a victim of impossible expectations after MPP, and yeah the live album made me appreciate its songs and all of the textures that took forever to untangle. as they release more albums, i think CHZ will hold up really hell within the context of their body of work.
― flappy bird, Saturday, 7 November 2015 21:06 (nine years ago)
monkey riches is a fun song. that's all i remember about this album.
― BringTheAuBonPain, Sunday, 8 November 2015 02:46 (nine years ago)
this album rules, sorry it took ~4 years for me to appreciate all of it. 'moon jock' is absolutely one of the best things they've ever done... explosive, angry, panicked, sad... a perfect intro to an 'alien band' album, 'moonjock' is insane from the start and manages to build gradually into that thrilling 'then we run out again run out gain' ending.

Scrolling down, saw that picture, thought '10 to 1 it's from Turrican', and there ya go!
Yeah, Moonjock is absolutely fantastic. Listening to it now, one of the details that make the song, and by extension the album, is the little drum fill in the massive post chorus.
My favorite album of 2012, but I haven't heard it that much since. Haven't heard a lot of music from 2012, though. Skipping through it, and it's still fantastic.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 01:09 (eight years ago)
Yeah, did a complete relisten, this album rules! I found it weird how so few people talked about the rhythms on this album, when really most of the noises are part of this completely weird polyrhythmic cacophony. So many tuplets, triplets, counter-melodies weaving in and out of the mix. A lot of it has an implied dancehall/baile funk lilt, but in the harshest digitized version possible.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 01:52 (eight years ago)
Meeting of the Waters is good! Always preferred Anco at their least hyperactive.
― Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Thursday, 11 May 2017 12:56 (eight years ago)
Yeah, I kind of love it. Man of Oil the best song they've done in a very long time, and it anchors the abstraction of the rest perfectly.
― Frederik B, Thursday, 11 May 2017 15:39 (eight years ago)
I like it a lot, they haven't done something this wide-open and textural since Campfire Songs/HCTI. Centipede was much more dense than this - I like how it breathes.

wonder if this album is gonna get critically evaluated at any point. seems like it came at a time where the new fans wanted another MPP-like pop album and the old fans were getting kinda sick of them. but despite being kind of a headache its probably my favorite from them right now. I think its one of the most solid albums they've done track-for-track and I keep hearing new things every time I listen to it. the live renditions of these tracks are amazing too. I'm pretty bowled over by Aveys ability to sing like that live
