the lack of similarity between releases annoys me to no end. the way i've currently got them sequenced matches the original vinyl release except for the placement of Slow Motion, which I think I moved based on something one of them said in an interview in that (great) Soft Bulletin documentary that pitchfork.tv did. in other words:
1. race for the prize2. spoonful weighs a ton3. spark that bled4. slow motion5. spiderbite song6. buggin7. what is the light8. observer9. waitin for a superman10. suddenly everything has changed11. the gash12. feeling yourself disintegrate13. sleeping on the roof
how does this look to yall? i feel like there's probably a thread that covers this already but a quick search didn't turn one up.

What's the Spiderbite Song? That's not on my copy.
― nate woolls, Monday, 14 May 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)
it is...a song. that was included on the US CD and vinyl releases. and the 5.1 re-release. in turn, Slow Motion was omitted from the US CD release. the dumbest of major label bullshit
― caulk the wagon and float it, Monday, 14 May 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)
also, it is good. seek it out.
― caulk the wagon and float it, Monday, 14 May 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)
You forgot the Peter Mokran mixes!! Those were all released on the original U.S. release of the album and are all better by far than the "real" ones. Suppposedly the band detests them. The lesson, as always: NEVER LISTEN TO THE ARTISTS!!
― Mr. Snrub, Monday, 14 May 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)
having the album end with 2 not-that-different alternate mixes of songs that have already appeared on the album always seemed really unnecessary to me. they shoulda just picked one version or the other of each song.
― kitty shayme (some dude), Monday, 14 May 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)
that list minus slow motion the definitive one for me
― ciderpress, Monday, 14 May 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)
i always figured the altnerate mixes were tantamount to bonus tracks
No way dude, the remix of "Race for the Prize" has its balls cut off. The drums in the OG band mix are far superior.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 14 May 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
yeah seriously, fuck outta here Snrub. Emperor is otm about the drums, and Soft Bulletin is all about the insane low end
― caulk the wagon and float it, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)
otm
no idea what "slow motion" is tho
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 May 2012 05:39 (thirteen years ago)
I've never got how this record was canonised when no one actually knows what's on it.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 05:59 (thirteen years ago)
i never knew "spiderbite song" wasn't on everyone's soft bulletin. y'all got jipped.
― billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:16 (thirteen years ago)
I've never even heard of Spiderbite Song until this thread.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:25 (thirteen years ago)
This is my UK Cd tracklisting:
1. Race for the Prize2. A Spoonful Weighs a Ton3. The Spark That Bled4. Slow Motion5. What Is the Light?6. The Observer7. Waitin' for a Superman8. Suddenly Everything Has Changed9. The Gash10. Feeling Yourself Disintegrate11. Sleeping on the Roof12. Sleeping On The Roof13. Race For The Prize14. Waitin' For The Superman (Remix)
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:26 (thirteen years ago)
Or is it...? That's copied and pasted from Amazon. Not sure ...Roof is twice in a row, though? Will take photo tonight.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:27 (thirteen years ago)
Spotify has no slow motion but has Spiderbite and Buggin' remix-Album version instead. And no repeating "Sleeping on the roof"
'part from that, the same.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:31 (thirteen years ago)
the spotify version doesn't have a count-off at the beginning of "race for the prize" which is on my cd
― billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:40 (thirteen years ago)
Pretty sure UK CD there's no repeating Sleepin on the Roof, the last 3 songs are the remixes of Race for the Prize, Waitin' for Superman and Buggin' (not that there's a non-remix of that anyway).
Is there any real reason for doing this? I can sort of see why labels might have different mixes for other markets (the Manics' Holy Bible for example) but to actually mess with the tracklist and change out songs is just ?
― useless chamber, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 10:01 (thirteen years ago)
It's the Flaming Lips, innit?
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 10:16 (thirteen years ago)
ah, I suppose. I just assumed it was record labels being dicks for no reason, and I thought the Flips didn't really like the remixes and they were forced on by the label.
― useless chamber, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 11:00 (thirteen years ago)
this is the official UK copy that i had when it came out. the vinyl had Buggin as a proper track half way through? that's how it should have been, not like on the CD where it's just thrown away at the end after 2 remixes. the whole bonus track remix idea really kills the mood it's crazy.

― piscesx, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 11:46 (thirteen years ago)
I always used to turn it off after Sleeping On The Roof, I think.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 12:13 (thirteen years ago)
I've had this fourteen track version since it came out, always skipped the remixes but I think Buggin' makes a great last song. Never heard Spiderbite Song.
I just saw the 2012 vinyl reissue yesterday with this tracklisting
Disc: 11. Race For The Prize2. A Spoonful Weighs A Ton3. The Spark That Bled4. The Spiderbite Song5. Buggin' (Remix)6. What Is The Light?7. The ObserverDisc: 21. Waitin' For A Superman2. Suddenly Everything Has Changed3. The Gash4. Slow Motion5. Feeling Yourself Disintegrate6. Sleeping On The Roof
Would be interested to hear how that sounds.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:21 (thirteen years ago)
Just listened to Spiderbite song on Youtube, yeah it's great. I really want to get that vinyl copy now.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)
That vinyl tracklist looks just about perfect to me.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)
the track rearrangement was definitely all Warner Bros bullshit, not any decision on the Lips' part. the remixes too. and they have definitely stated that Disintegrate / Sleeping on the Roof are the proper end to the album.
― caulk the wagon and float it, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:39 (thirteen years ago)
just can't remember why i moved Slow Motion from track 11 to track 4. but there was a reason.
― caulk the wagon and float it, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:41 (thirteen years ago)
That vinyl tracklist does look good. For some reason I've always been under the impression Buggin' was originally on some movie soundtrack, and was a pretty poor substitute for the Spiderbite Song (I can't remember if they played that when they toured the UK in 1999, but they definitely did it for a Peel session, along with some other song that I can't remember what it was now).
― useless chamber, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:42 (thirteen years ago)
The album before this was "Zaireeka", the 4-CDs-at-once thing, so I bet when Warner Bros. decided to go ahead and back that, they would have alot more control over "Bulletin".
Buggin' was on Austin Powers 2.
Spiderbite Song is WAY awesome and the album came out in UK before US so I pre-ordered it back in '99 and had to do without it for a year or two.
