I got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone.I crashed my car into the bridge. I watched, i let it burn.I threw your sh*t into a bag and pushed it down the stairs.I crashed my car into the bridge.
I don’t care, i love it. I don’t care.
I don’t care, i love it. I don’t care.HcfYou’re on a different road, i’m in the milky wayYou want me down on earth, but i am up in spaceYou’re so damn hard to please, we gotta kill this switchYou’re from the 70’s, but i’m a 90’s b*tch
HcfI love it!I love it!
I don’t care, i love it.I don’t care, i love it, i love it.I don’t care, i love it. I don’t care.

This was written by Charli XCX too apparently? I am a big fan of hers, but it makes perfect sense that she let someone else have this song. I really hope this doesn't fall by the wayside because the current pop climate is really crying out for something that's as messy and rambunctious and, well, fun.
― boxedjoy, Friday, 25 May 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

that flaming lips thing is unlistenable to me. ugh.
Loving this song too, though it all hinges almost entirely on the whole 70s/90s premise for me. Charlie xcx might just turn out to be some kind of pop genius.
And yeah, that Flaming Lips track is godawful.
― Look at how funky he is! (jer.fairall), Sunday, 27 May 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)
I <3 Charli XCX, but this pushes past fun and deep into annoying territory. Still impressively unhinged and granted, more interesting than yr standard chartpop, so torch for Charli undimmed.

I was pretty meh on it for the longest time, but after finding myself dancing along to it with a crowd of over-served friends and strangers at a bar in Andersonville at 2:30 in the morning made me feel that, yes, it damn well might be.
― i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 03:32 (twelve years ago)

― dmr, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 03:40 (twelve years ago)
the best is if you listen to icona pop's "top tracks" on spotify the first one is this song and the second one is a remix, and the transition between the end of the original and the beginning of the remix -- where the refrain is repeated a few time with the beat dropped out, and then a minimal synth line is introduced, and then more and more sounds, percussion, are added... it's just transcendent.
― the strange and important sound of the synthesizer (Treeship), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 03:40 (twelve years ago)
this is one of those songs where the clean edit just makes me barf, it sounds so off
― ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 04:33 (twelve years ago)
Really hate the vocal effect on this, even if it does support the claim to being a "90s bitch." It's catchy, I'll give it that, and it does kind of perk up the grocery store radio. Ehh.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 04:36 (twelve years ago)
i don't care! i love it! (re. the vocal effect.)
i like that this song is liberating, but in a way that marxists i have known would say is inauthentic, because it defines freedom negatively, as the mere absence of responsibility, cathexis, etc. it makes me want to shout "I Don't Care!" at them.
― the strange and important sound of the synthesizer (Treeship), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 04:49 (twelve years ago)
I've been kind of suspicious about the narrative of this song's belated popularity in the U.S. Like, was it really just because of the Girls placement?

i think it's been in a bunch of things (trailers, ads, might've even been the theme for a jersey shore spinoff iirc??)
i'm not going to check, but i'd wager it's been in glee too
― monotony, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 05:13 (twelve years ago)
would wager you have cause and effect backwards. it's not cause: girls placement and effect: placements everywhere, but cause: PR blitz and effect: it's on girls and a lot of other stuff too.

(crashed my car into a bridge, btw)
the song was in the air for a long time, but it had a huge leap in download #s the week after the Girls episode aired and started climbing the charts, and didn't really have any pop radio airplay until the couple months after that happened. so i think in this case it's fair to say the Girls thing was more of a tipping point than the sole reason it's this big, but it also definitely wouldn't be in heavy rotation on top 40 stations right now without that having happened.

Not much left to say about this, but worth marking that this is almost definitely going to be UK #1 (if the midweeks are any indicator) this weekend.
Which means since the PJ&Duncan incident we've had Duke Dumont, Rudimental, Daft Punk, Naughty Boy, Robin Thicke and Icona Pop. Still works for me as a very good run

now that it's being used in about 20 different advertising campaigns
it's kind of insane. doesn't anyone buy an exclusive or something? like, how can a creative director get away with pitching this song to use in the 20th ad campaign? semi-serious question, the amount of U.S. tv ads this song is in right now is off the charts.

Went out to dinner with family friends at a crab house last night. There were a bunch of kids and at one point they all sang this song unaccompanied. The whole scene felt like something from Sound of Music.
