people agree and disagree about pianists, violinists, conductors but I've never heard anybody with anything but praise for DF-D. His Winterreise are the benchmark, I think. A great loss.

Opera and vocal mavens are an odd breed though, I have seen quite a number of those types with big axes to grind against DF-D. Inevitable I guess when someone's influence is SOOO big. Just glad I can't hear the supposed shortcomings of his method.

for the first time in my life (inspired by semi-related discourse on another thread) i'm listening to DFD singing wolf lieder

newsflash: he is (was) possibly a marvel

lieder are never going to top my mood board per se but this is not a difficult voice to listen to

his Schuberts are brilliant too

i started with the wolf songs bcz i know zip abt wolf (schubert i know wrote a colossal number of songs that classical chat generally now only mentions in passing)

(DJP will school me hard on that last claim probably but i seem to be agitated abt the "place of song in orthodox classically composed aesthetics" at the moment, if only based on vibe)

DFD’s “Der Erlkonig” is all-time.

May I recommend his recording of Othmar Schoeck’s BURIED ALIVE (lebendig begraben)

I don’t know if Schubert is in fashion now or not, tbh. I regularly confuse him with Schumann and Strauss so basically any pontificating I do on the subject is probably talking about someone else and should be ignored.
