why no Down With Prince, Hittin Skittles, My Piano, etc etc?

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

just "official singles"

anyway none of those songs should be voted for anyway

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

This is harder than I expected it to be. I'm thinking either "Ready for the Floor" or "One Life Stand".

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

1. ready for the floor (this is an absolutely 10/10 classic song)
2. i feel better (this is close)
3. boy from school ("classic" if not classic, but not maybe a bit too much of a ballad)
4. one life stand
5. over and over

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

Wasn't Take It In a single?

was it?

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

I remember you could buy it on iTunes about a full month before the album came out.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:31 (thirteen years ago)

iirc i hate every single one of these songs

some dude, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:33 (thirteen years ago)

1. ready for the floor (this is an absolutely 10/10 classic song)

get out of here, gohard

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:33 (thirteen years ago)

after hating 'down with prince' when it came out i had a strong bias against hot chip for ages, until first i grudgingly liked 'ready for the floor', then like liked it, then thought it was one of my favourite songs of the year. i felt pretty dumb. especially when i went back to 'down with prince' for the first time since its release and found it pretty innocuous.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:34 (thirteen years ago)

"Ready for the Floor." I like The Warning's album tracks more than its singles. Otherwise this act has gotten worse with each album.

i feel better<<<<

bnw, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

just "official singles"

how are any of those, released as commercial singles, by record labels, that you can buy in shops, with sleeves and everything, not "official"?

anyway none of those songs should be voted for anyway

My Piano is a fucking jam

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 01:07 (thirteen years ago)

one life stand

piscesx, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 02:09 (thirteen years ago)

no down with prince = no sexual chocolate = no vote

garrett still a cunt (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised how few official singles they have. It has to be Ready For The Floor which is one of the best singles of the last five years. Apart from Boy From School and One Life Stand most of my favourite Hot Chip songs are album tracks, We're Looking For a Lot of Love, Alley Cats, Look After me, No Fit Shape, We Have Love, Out at the Pictures etc.

Agree that my Piano is a great song.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised how few official singles they have.

Don't fall for J0rdan's propaganda!

(No Fit State is def not official but feels like a single cos it was around on the Barbarian EP, along with Boy From School, half a year before that album campaign started happening.) (and We Have Love was a legit single but remix-focussed, doesn't have a video etc) (and I got super-happy hearing them soundcheck Alley Cats while walking in behind the venue last time they toured here)

Kitchen Person OTM. Voted 'One Life Stand', and 'Boy From School' would be a close second. My fave Hot Chip moment, howev, is 'So Glad to See You' from The Warning, where they are at their most Postal Service-y.

Mercer Finn, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

"over & over" is the best original but hot chip originals are kind of irrelevant next to remixes of hot chip which is the only way they can touch greatness, specifically eg

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 06:38 (thirteen years ago)

If I had to put any one of these on right now it would probably be 'I Feel Better', that synth hook is fantastic.

I am completely bored of 'Over And Over' and could happily never listen to it again. While the vocals have got worse over time, they've got much better at putting grooves together.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 07:59 (thirteen years ago)

fuck it's impossible to call. lazily, i want to say it's between "over and over" and "boy from school", the originals of which are better than any remix i've heard, but "i feel better" is just astounding. "one life stand" is only a small step down, more due to the cheese overload than a lack of musical appeal.

also, i have the idea that there's a great remix of "colors" out there somewhere, one that elevates it to a similar level, but i can't find it (and it isn't fred falke).

agree that they've fallen off as an albums band, but the one life stand singles easily hold their own with the warning. and "night and day" is great!

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 08:03 (thirteen years ago)

went with "i feel better" (robbing "boy from school", the obvious victor here)

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 08:04 (thirteen years ago)

also, "one pure thought" is the best made in the dark single by far, though it will be cruelly denied in this poll

One Pure Thought or Boy From School

You can do it Sun Myung Moon (NickB), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 08:16 (thirteen years ago)

Always forget about Hot Chip, but they could've been an awesome band if they got a proper singer

You can do it Sun Myung Moon (NickB), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 08:18 (thirteen years ago)

i cannot accept that. he makes them. at their very best ("boy from school" and "i feel better"), he takes them there. not that he's a great singer, but with him they make something that could not have existed otherwise.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 08:24 (thirteen years ago)

gohard otm

The Reverend, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 08:27 (thirteen years ago)

I Feel Better. I think they're improving with each album, plus it's a joint Joe/Alexis vocal, which is always a good idea. The wackiness of some of the early songs grates on me even more now that it turns out they could do much more - Shake Your Fist is such horrible, smirking, too-clever-to-dance music.

xp Have you heard the DFA mix of Colours contenderizer?

Get wolves (DL), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 09:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, that one's good, but it's not what i was thinking of. had a folder of hot chip remixes circa the warning, but it seems to have disappeared sometime over the past few years.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

Tempted to vote "Shake a Fist" for the Rundgren sample and the fact that it's seemingly about The Fly...

The parts where the synth line suddenly pans from right to left in "One Life Stand" still get me every time. I love that.

voting "Ready for the Floor" though it could have just as easily been "One Life Stand."

One Life Stand over RFTF and Over and over

da croupier, Friday, 1 June 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

I thought it was "Drivin' round Putney with the top down".

if, Friday, 1 June 2012 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

Mmm they're from Putney so that would make sense, yes. You're probably right, it does sounds like Putney on record.

six years pass...

There's a new single out, "Hungry Child." Pretty good!

We should do this again.

Simon H., Thursday, 4 April 2019 16:48 (six years ago)

i would still vote "ready for the floor"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 April 2019 17:20 (six years ago)

I'd be interested to see an albums poll at some point.

The new single is great. Weird and intentionally distracting video although I'm always happy to Martin Starr
