Modern Rock #1 Hits of 2000

Our series through Billboard's #1 Modern Rock hits continues today with 2000. This is where it starts to get real shitty. My favorite album of all time, Radiohead's "Kid A," came out this year and only managed a #10 spot on the chart with "Optimistic."

Some notable #2 hits from 2000 that missed the top spot include No Doubt's "Ex-Girlfriend," the Smashing Pumpkins' "Stand Inside Your Love," Blink 182's "Adam's Song," and Incubus' "Stellar." That's right – "Pardon Me" went only to #3.

Past polls, by me and others:

#1 Modern Rock Hits of 1988/89
#1 Modern Rock Hits of 1990
#1 Modern Rock Hits of 1991

so easy to transpose these execrable titles! Such as: "All The Small Things (In My Hands)"

i....don't think i can vote

call all destroyer, Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

i always thought the line in "All the Small Things" was "a little bit nil" instead of the equally stupid "my little windmill"

rock the swagon and g.o.a.t. it (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:12 (thirteen years ago)

i never knew the "real name" of that fuel song was hemorrhage

call all destroyer, Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

its interesting how the 98 chart had like actual "alternative" bands and then 99 --> radio was just like "fuck it"

id' like to credit it to Napster/YOUR HARD DRIVE, but i think it's just a coincidence that alt-rock was dyin

rock the swagon and g.o.a.t. it (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:15 (thirteen years ago)

I relistened to the Green Day to remind myself that it was as dumb as I thought. Voted for Blink 182.

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:15 (thirteen years ago)

spin did their best to suggest nu-metal was alternative until woodstock 99 made that untenable

da croupier, Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

nah, spin's nu-metal coverage was pretty open about it's begrudgingness

back 2 my point doe, like the inevitable LimbsKing polls of 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 are just gonna be Green Day, Chili Peppers, Offspring and Foo Fighters trading places and doing different versions of their formula

rock the swagon and g.o.a.t. it (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:17 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't mean to suggest it wasn't begrudgingly doing this

Since I voted for Blink 182 last time, I think this might be the end of the line for me. (I don't know--maybe something will turn up.) The early 2000s for me were all about Missy Elliot.

"Otherside" was the only thing from Californication that I kinda liked, so that. That Fuel song got played. the. fuck. out. on the radio back in the early '00s.

Snowqueen's Icedragon (crüt), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

actually never mind, I'm voting for "All the Small Things." Even though it was on the 1999 poll too.

Snowqueen's Icedragon (crüt), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

Hm, I haven't heard Warning but I really like American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. I heard "Longview" the other day. All it did for me was make me feel old.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

I think modern rock radio made a major resurgence in 2004 with American Idiot and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. (People 10 years younger than me get no pity.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

From about 2000 through 2008, most modern rock sucked. After that, some good bands started creeping back onto the top of playlists (Black Keys, Phoenix, Silversun Pickups).

LimbsKing, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

Three Cheers is a classic to me, but imo the only time Green Day have been true to their fast fun roots in the last 10 years was on the album they released as the Foxboro Hottubs

some dude, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

I actually enjoyed Silversun Pickups when they came out but there's no way I'd rank them over the best emo of the mid-2000s or the White Stripes' hits from that time.

xpost Well yeah, they're not staying true to their pop-punk roots, which is why I like them.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

Enjoy the Black Keys though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah... forgot to mention the Stripes. My favorite band of the nu-metal hangover era.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

if we wanna talk about the whole decade there's a thread about one of my lorax-loved lists: al ship's top 50 rock singles of the 00s -- which is your favorite?

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 2 June 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know if ILX Blink 182 love is funny or endearing in a "he ain't heavy, he's my brother" sort of way

we gotta move these refrigerators (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 2 June 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

Same goes with Green Day. They had some good songs on Dookie and a couple from another early album but that's about it

I actually really like the parent album for the Green Day single here, but that's one of the weaker songs on it. Fuel wins this one, then, by default.

Maybe I just have a block with processing the RHCP as gothy mopers?

It's kind of funny that everyone who voted for Fuel seemed to do it as a 'by default' sort of deal. Maybe I should have just abstained.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:25 (thirteen years ago)

I actually looked up an interview with Blink 182 to see if they pronounce "things" like that when they talk.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:26 (thirteen years ago)

(They do.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:26 (thirteen years ago)

it's cool sund4r. The whole Californication album has always seemed to me like RHCP's attempt to write a whole album's worth of songs like Soul to Squeeze, which is my favorite song of theirs. I don't think they get as horrifically bland as everyone here is implying until By the Way

I also think ILX underrates the singles from One Hot Minute and am tempted to check if that album is on Spotify.

freebroheem (loves laboured breathing), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:31 (thirteen years ago)

californication's a good record. but i've always hated funk RHCP.

of family bonds and individual triumph. Narrated by Tim Allen, (zachlyon), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:36 (thirteen years ago)

I actually feel a little bad that all I've done here is post dismissive opinions without thinking critically about anything. Ten years ago, I hated it when people in their 30s did that about stuff I liked. So it's more interesting to hear about why people like these songs. I think I'd love to hear a defence of "Kryptonite".

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:48 (thirteen years ago)

calling something a rewrite because it's the same band is lame, they don't really sound alike at all.

kel ler/pharmacists (some dude), Sunday, 3 June 2012 10:36 (thirteen years ago)

I also think ILX underrates the singles from One Hot Minute and am tempted to check if that album is on Spotify.

"Aeroplane" is my favorite of their "fast" ones.

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:23 (thirteen years ago)

yeah "Aeroplane" is secretly one of their best post-BSSM singles. "Warped" isn't bad too. it's just "My Friends" (and probably the rest of the album) that gives that era of the band such a stench.

kel ler/pharmacists (some dude), Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:33 (thirteen years ago)

calling something a rewrite because it's the same band is lame, they don't really sound alike at all.

that prechorus "too far away" is almost a direct quote from the chorus in Shimmer("too far away/for me to hold"); not the same melody, but def the same accents...which is not the same thing as a 're-write', but is some pretty bald recyclage. Of course it could also be intentionally self-referential (the immediately preceding lyrics are "don't you remember anything I said when I said") Still: lame.

That said, re-listening to this song now, it is a bit better than I remember, though I still like "Otherside" more.

Also I listened to "Parallel Universe", the only song from the first four on Californication that I didn't remember, and it was dope. That album might've aged better than I even thought.

freebroheem (loves laboured breathing), Sunday, 3 June 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

"Aeroplane" is the worst fucking song, come on now

that is a weird thing to bring up over lean cuisine (DJP), Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

looking at the one hot minute tracklisting i seem to have excised most of it from my memory. 'aeroplane' is alright, 'my friends' is p dire, i vaguely remember 'walkabout' being terrible, and hey 'pea' is um some kind of charming. the rest, i've got nothing.

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

that prechorus "too far away" is almost a direct quote from the chorus in Shimmer("too far away/for me to hold");

To be fair, 1) he's saying "Don't fall away" and 2) the refrain's lyric is lifted straight from Bernie Taupin, so if you want to go after them for laziness, there's a pretty strong angle right there.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)
