Nostalgia death spiral.

rock the swagon and g.o.a.t. it (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 4 June 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

'twas my graduation year AWWWWWW '98

i will make the hard decision and take tearin' up my heart over my heart will go on, yeah!

fauxmarc, Monday, 4 June 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Basically cool with any of these:

30. Janet Jackson "Together Again"
28. Big Punisher f/Joe "Still Not A Player"
25. Next "Too Close"
24. Monica "The First Night"
21. Natalie Imbruglia "Torn"

05. Goo Goo Dolls "Iris"
03. Aaliyah "Are You That Somebody?"
02. Aerosmith "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"
01. Brandy & Monica "The Boy Is Mine"

Björk lied (Eric H.), Monday, 4 June 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

"Too Close" is the only one of these I still reguarly listen to today, it just burns me up that R. Kelly didn't write that song. "Intergalactic" is a close second but I'm so incredibly burned out on it at this point. "Ray of Light" actually kind of held up. I liked that and "Frozen" a lot but that album blew.

frogbs, Monday, 4 June 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

also Whiney GTFO nobody cares that more threads exist that you don't like

frogbs, Monday, 4 June 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, to clarify, I like all of those songs in context with eachother (and probably even more from the full list). There are plenty I don't really like anymore (or didn't then) in isolation.

Björk lied (Eric H.), Monday, 4 June 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

this list is really good, too hard to choose

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 June 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

'twas my graduation year AWWWWWW '98

*sigh*, mine too

there were some okay-ish things happening in RnB and electronic but very little of it's listed here. an era I wish I could scrub away honestly

Chris S, Monday, 4 June 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

Scrub yourself away.

Björk lied (Eric H.), Monday, 4 June 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

no u

Chris S, Monday, 4 June 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Can't wait to wash/rinse/repeat this convo in TRL top 30 of 1999.

Björk lied (Eric H.), Monday, 4 June 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

father of mine, lol

Hungry4Ass, Monday, 4 June 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

"The Boy Is Mine" is dope.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 4 June 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

Can't wait to wash/rinse/repeat this convo in TRL top 30 of 1999.

if anyone else wants to poll '99 they're welcome to it, but i'm not interested in a poll-series. i was thinking of just taking 10 from an individual TRL episode, but for the one I was considering "Are You That Somebody" clearly would've received 80% of the votes... this is a better representation of the first few months of the show IMO.

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

the one i was looking for isn't listed on the archive website either.. i vividly remember an episode that included "intergalactic" "the dope show" and "got the life" with pearl jam's "do the evolution.." it was kind of surprising how much rock appeared in the 1998 episodes vs. throughout the 2000's.

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

also pre-Britney TRL and pre-Eminem TRL are kinda "wtf" concepts

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

I'm down with most of these, but "One Week" sends me into a murderous rage. It's good I don't own firearms.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that song is the musical equivalent of terrorist abortion

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

wouldn't a terrorist abortion be a good thing

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 June 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

i meant like forced abortion by terrorists

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

BNL being the terrorists obviously

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

In this scenario, Barenaked Ladies is the terrorist and the abortee is my peace of mind.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

where are these terrorists that are out there providing fundamental health care

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 June 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

my favorite TRL memory is some girl screaming "MY NAME IS KATIE AND I VOTED FOR 'BACK THAT THING UP' BY JUVENILE BECAUSE I'M BACKIN' MY THING UP FOR JUVENILE! WOO!"

WHEY AHR MAH DREGUNS? (DJP), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

These songs shame the modern rock charts

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

this is the other TRL poll thing (so now we dont have to do '99)

TRL March 15th 1999

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

this is a great idea btw f the h8rs

the route is ban (k3vin k.), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

good idea for a series: poll every episode of TRL ever

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

'iris' is one of the worst songs of the decade -- would probably rather listen to creed than that shit. probably would go with 'intergalactic' or 'are you that somebody.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

i just want you to know who i am

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

This is the only context in which I can listen to "Ray of Light" these days.

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

i would totally be cool with polling TRL top 10, monthly, for like its like 2-3 year peak

the route is ban (k3vin k.), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

I like Iris, so whatever.

Even in 1998, "My Heart Will Go On" seems a little "old" for MTV. Did they ever air that video?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

about 99% certain they did

WHEY AHR MAH DREGUNS? (DJP), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

no they showed pics of Scrunchy Face sliding lifeless into the sea

go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

yes! early 98 had a different "top ten" show and i remember Titanic fighting it out with Usher "Nice and Slow"

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

and Gettin Jiggy With It IIRC

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:38 (thirteen years ago)

god there are some incredible songs on this

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 08:03 (thirteen years ago)

1. are you that somebody?
2. the boy is mine
3. can i get a...
4. doo wop (that thing)
5. ray of light
6. torn
7. all my life
8. everybody (backstreet's back)
9. together again
10. my way

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 08:04 (thirteen years ago)

My graduation year as well. I don't think I've heard any of these songs since '98. Loved "Intergalactic" at the time, so that.

musicfanatic, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

many of these are really great. favorite 5:

1. torn
2. too close
3. doo wop
4. are you that somebody?
5. tearin' up my heart

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

mannn i have an old vhs tape on which i recorded the trl 1999 end of summer countdown, i should watch that again.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

NA-NA-NANA-NANA-NA
NA-NA-NANA-NANA!

The Reverend, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

pop culture was so ripe in 1998

flopson, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 23:33 (thirteen years ago)

my list is lex's list up until no. 5 after which i dont care any more.

this list is kind of amazing and horrifying in equal amounts which is pretty much how i remember 1998.

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:15 (thirteen years ago)

fuck it, i voted for jiggy

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:15 (thirteen years ago)

haha i think this was the year when will smith turned for me from hometown hero with enjoyable sitcom in syndication to scourge and menace.

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

wait i didnt even see too close

im gonna change my vote to that

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

you know what major hit is missing?

Jennifer Paige's "Crush."

I would have voted for it.

30 ANYTIME BRIAN McKNIGHT

God, 1998 was good. I even liked Brian McKnight then.

Björk lied (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:28 (thirteen years ago)

Even in 1998, "My Heart Will Go On" seems a little "old" for MTV. Did they ever air that video?

It was on quite a bit. Titanic was a huge hit with teen & tween girls who would see it multiple times, so I remember this video getting a lot of plays.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:31 (thirteen years ago)

The Aaliyah track has aged (ever so) slightly poorly, but it's still genius.
Best of 98 and any other of the last 30 or so years.

yeah it definitely gradually (but quickly) crystallized into what it became in '99, before that it was almost this weird experiment because iirc MTV had never really done a video countdown based purely on viewer votes before, at least definitely not a daily one. it started out as like a half hour top 5 countdown hosted by Carson at like 9:30pm or something, hosted by Carson in a little studio w/ no audience ("Weird" by Hanson is the first video i remember seeing at #1), and within a few months it was the live afternoon thing and people started crowding outside etc. but before the boy band/teen pop armies had mobilized any semi-popular artist of any genre could get a video on there, including alt-rock bands.

shipl.de.al (some dude), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:48 (thirteen years ago)

er strike redundant "hosted by Carson"

balls, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 04:28 (thirteen years ago)

it's at least mentioned in the mtv oral history, basically confirming what everyone suspected - that record labels flooded the lines but that it didn't matter cuz there were way more kids who just wanted to see motley crue's 'home sweet home' until mtv 'retired' that from dial mtv and then they just wanted to see def leppard's 'pour some sugar on me'. i can still remember when this (briefly) knocked def lep from the top, breaking the streak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fAi8Jc2hrw

balls, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

Oh ye: I remember the daily MTV countdowns from the early 90s. Excellent songs like "Epic" and "Love Will Never Do without You". Plus follow up singles from Warrant's Cherry Pie permanently etched into my brain: "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "I Saw Red" anyone?

freebroheem (loves laboured breathing), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 04:52 (thirteen years ago)

I basically agree with Lex's top 5, except I'd put 'The Boy is Mine' at #1.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:16 (thirteen years ago)

01. Brandy & Monica "The Boy Is Mine"
02. Next "Too Close"
03. Aaliyah "Are You That Somebody?"
04. Janet Jackson "Together Again"
05. Jay-z f/Ja and Amil-lion "Can I Get A..."
06. Beastie Boys "Intergalactic"
07. Lauren Hill "Doo Wop (That Thing)"
08. Goo Goo Dolls "Iris"
09. Big Punisher f/Joe "Still Not A Player"
10. Natalie Imbruglia "Torn"

Björk lied (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:22 (thirteen years ago)

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "I Saw Red" anyone?

Ugh I remember both of those videos all too well.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

They only showed like 30 second clips of the videos; this show was awful! VH1 top 10 countdown was much better IMO

Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 12:45 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah Dial MTV, that was before my time but i had heard of it -- i thought it was just a call-in request show, not a countdown.

the real precursor to TRL imo was the short-lived '92 show 'Hangin' w/MTV,' which was live and ran in the afternoon, featured John Norris and Ed Lover and Dr. Dre and the usual gang from that era, i remember seeing the premiere of the "November Rain" video on there.

As much as I would love to throw a vote for Aaliyah, ODB in "Ghetto Superstar" is too classic..

billstevejim, Thursday, 7 June 2012 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

And yes OTM to everyone who said this list is greater than the sum of its parts.

billstevejim, Thursday, 7 June 2012 04:37 (thirteen years ago)

Or wait... the opposite?

billstevejim, Thursday, 7 June 2012 04:37 (thirteen years ago)

My mistake.. it actually would equal the sum of its parts, but it's greater than all of them individually or something... yeah...

billstevejim, Thursday, 7 June 2012 04:38 (thirteen years ago)

I think I was aiming for "it's a great list of great songs."

Björk lied (Eric H.), Thursday, 7 June 2012 05:12 (thirteen years ago)
