Leaning more towards "yes" than "no."

aye "rolling round the basement floor" etc. love it to bits. whole album in fact. saw a pretty pristine copy of the album with the full comic book inside and all the inserts for about £2 in Manchester the other week. stupidly didnt buy it. the CD reissue has a tiny replica of the comic and costs about 20 quid!
― piscesx, Friday, 8 June 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)
Not even in my Elton top 20.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 8 June 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)
Okay, that was harsh. I forgot the "DAMMIT" part. It would probably squeak in towards the bottom of this theoretical list.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 8 June 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)
My favourite song of his by a mile.
― Kitchen Person, Friday, 8 June 2012 00:34 (thirteen years ago)
Bernie at his most crazy too.

As a teen, used to picture Marianne Faithful covering it, imagining the "strangled by your haunted social scene / just a pawn out played by a dominating queen" sounding especially awesome.
I was a weird kid.

Has Elton ever had a better lyric to sing?

great, but "benny and the jets" is the EJ song i hold above all others (well, that and "rocket man")

"I Feel Like a Bullet (In the Gun of Robert Ford)" is a far superior, more imaginative sequel (although I still love SSMLT).

i even love that editing job at 4 minutes in. someone sliced my song tonight. and then the ringing guitar comes in. and then goes away. love everything about this song. the drums are amazing. piano is too. stacked vocal heaven. lyrics. elton's voice is amazing. there is a soul cover of this song from that time and it sucks. no urgency. it just becomes a song.

Yeah, this is top ten Elton for me, not sure what I could say about it that hasn't been said. It's not half as obtuse as most Taupin - genuinely feels like dude tried to take Elton's actual life experience and capture what mattered about it. Works too because the low of the low situation he gets saved from is convincingly sketched: the "one more beer / and I don't hear you anymore" is willing to show him as an asshole, the cruelty of his own part in the situation so it's not just that he's the victim of some harpy.
Never heard "House of Cards" before. Huh. Not exactly bowling me over, the water guitar doesn't serve this one so well. I could imagine it growing on me if it were a Captain Fantastic album track.

Probably in my top 10 favourite songs, yes. Maybe not the very best song ever written, but close.
Also:THROCKING (participial vb.)The action of continually pushing down the lever on a pop-up toaster in the hope that you will thereby get it to understand that you want it to toast something. Also : a style of drum-playing favoured by Nigel Olsson of the Elton John Band, reminiscent of the sound of someone slapping a frankfurter against a bucket. An excellent example of this is to be heard on 'Someone Save My Life Tonight' from the album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.(from 'The Meaning of Liff' by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd)
― Jeff W, Friday, 8 June 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)
it doesn't sound like a frankfurter being slapped against a bucket, but i like that they came up with a word for the sound.
