I actually really like this album still. It's not the most consistent album, but it does have a lot of great tunes. Have waffled between "The Background" and "Motorcycle Drive-By" historically, but for now I'm gonna say "Motorcycle Drive-By".

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

no bullshit all of these songs are great

the route is ban (k3vin k.), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

motorcycle drive-by has always been my favorite, no qualms calling it a fantastic song. i have to keep a few feet of distance from the record because the whole thing takes place in a freshman dorm lounge room and it's hard to not roll your eyes at "I LIVE MY LIFE LIKE A BURNING MAN" in that context. and i spend the entirety of london thinking THEN DON'T GO TO LONDON ASSHOLE

but they wrote some undeniable hooks jfc

of family bonds and individual triumph. Narrated by Tim Allen, (zachlyon), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

I was listening to this the other day

'graduate'

iatee, Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it's going to be hard to not vote for "motorcycle drive-by", too many emotions from 17 year old me tied up with that song. liking them is uncool for whatever reason but once 90s nostalgia really becomes more widespread, this album will be due for a re-evaluation

the route is ban (k3vin k.), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

the guitar tones this band works with, esp on this album, are just so damn warm, perfect for summer and driving around. there are few better road trip pop albums i know of

the route is ban (k3vin k.), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I have always thought there was something about the production that made these songs more interesting than the underlying material

iatee, Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

hi iatee!

iatee, Saturday, 9 June 2012 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

def owned this and def never listened 2 past 'hows it gonna be'
think i recall 'thanks a lot' coming on and racing 2 the 5-cd changer a few times

johnny crunch, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

I'm way too old for this album to resonate but "Jumper" and "How's It Gonna Be" make the most of his preening delivery.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

i know lots of people who strongly rep for the 2nd half of this album, which i've maybe heard once but should probably give more of a shot

billstevejim, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

I hope it's ok if I vote only really remembering the 5 radio hits.

billstevejim, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

I must be on the other side of the too-old divide; I love "Semi-Charmed Life," and "Graduate" was 2nd on my year-end. I'll have to re-listen to see which sounds better today.

clemenza, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)

Forgot about "How's It Going to Be"--had that one #4 the following year. Anyway, "Graduate."

clemenza, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

Classic album. SCL got me into it, have a hard time feeling it nowadays tho as its stuck in adult contemp radio 4lyfe. Listening to SCL now and there's some really cool guitar harmonics/tones at 1:20. If it didn't have the doo doo dooos on it it probably wouldn't be as divisive, I still like it tho.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 10 June 2012 06:48 (thirteen years ago)

I know this album front to back. I had this badass aiwa discman that had this special feature lol where I could program 3-songs to repeat. So I had programmed I Want You, The Background and God Of Wine to repeat every night for like 6 months. Ha I wanted this one girl so bad and she wasn't having it (friendzone) and those songs hit home so hard, added to my anguish.

The pre-chorus/hook coupled with the way those guitar tones swoosh around on I Want You still resonates. The way the guitar cries out on The Background at 3:20, man. And of course the way God Of Wine builds into this beast of a tune that closes the album is all time:

I CANT KEEP IT ALL TOGETHER
I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW
I CANT KEEP IT ALL TOGETHER

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:19 (thirteen years ago)

Like every song on this album has a killer intro and an even better coda.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:23 (thirteen years ago)

jumper or losing a whole year really

fauxmarc, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:27 (thirteen years ago)

or semi-charmed life i guess, not it's fault it's played out

fauxmarc, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:28 (thirteen years ago)

are you kidding me

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 08:18 (thirteen years ago)

anyway it's one of the last three. best last three tracks of any album ever.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 08:20 (thirteen years ago)

oh, here's where i say i spent the better part of my life thinking blue was better than this record

i don't think that anymore but blue is still really, really great

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 08:23 (thirteen years ago)

of family bonds and individual triumph. Narrated by Tim Allen, (zachlyon), Sunday, 10 June 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

"burning man" is the worst track here but it's still great

the riiiiise and fall of my sloppy looove

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

also "thanks a lot" is the weirdest song on here, and most of that weirdness is in stephen jenkins' delivery, which seems to deliberately elude melody

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

the guitar tones on "thanks a lot"! they're so bright and laser-y!

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

this was the first album that i ever loved, i was like 10-12 years old and listened to it night after night, stirred feelings of adolescent longing, the sound of it probably still influences my taste now. i haven't heard it in forever and it feels incredibly odd to listen to it now, the way it so immediately recalls how i felt as a kid in that place and time gives me chills.

some dude, Sunday, 24 June 2012 02:53 (thirteen years ago)

k3vin k., Sunday, 24 June 2012 02:54 (thirteen years ago)

WTF

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 June 2012 00:36 (thirteen years ago)

been listening to ursa major lately and it's a pretty good album if you ignore like most of the lyrics and "summer town."

also it's unfortunate that they dumped two of their best songs on an EP a year before it came out

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 25 June 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

the intro to losing a whole year is really a great choice of album intro

fauxmarc, Monday, 25 June 2012 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

Weird #1?! I didn't realize there was a mild consensus on the best non a-side.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

i voted for losing a whole year.

k3vin k., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

their best song is "Wounded" from Blue. get on it

frog ball (caulk the wagon and float it), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

i first heard the album via my wife and brother-in-law and they both always seemed to favor "Motorcycle Drive-By" as the obvious best deep cut

God Of Wine was robbed.

pretty sure i think all of the zero votes were robbed except maybe "good for you"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 17:35 (twelve years ago)

Like all of my AIM-esque user names at one point in HS were some variation of God of Wine. I don't think I had drank more than a glass of wine at that point.

BMICHAEL, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)

Good point BN.

lol bmichael

skeet-skeet-gate (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 17:52 (twelve years ago)

"god of wine" is a great live closer. this album holds up well against any classic rock record from the era imo

manti 乒乓 (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 18:06 (twelve years ago)

totally

Been listening to it a ton again since this thread started up.
