Modern Rock #1 Hits of 2005

Our series through Billboard's #1 Modern Rock hits continues today with 2005. We're still in a bit of a holding pattern between the occasional good song and strange '90s remnants – like Nine Inch Nails and Weezer hitting #1 for the first time about a decade after their most influential albums.

Some notable #2 hits from 2005 that just missed the top spot include Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends," Queens of the Stone Age's "Little Sister," Fall Out Boy's "Dance Dance," and Foo Fighters' "No Way Back."

"feel good, inc"

These songs are pretty uniformly terrible. I *like* FF, but these are not their best songs by any stretch. Voting for Gorillaz.

Was a tough call for me between "E-Pro," "Feel Good Inc," and "Only," but went with Beck. Really like that sped-up sample of "When the Levee Breaks."

markers otm. only one of these songs was good enough to be covered by Prince.

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

it depresses me to no end that "Feel Good Inc" is by far the most popular thing De La Soul have ever been involved in. and their 'verse' is even the worst part of a terrible song.

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

Didn't Ray Davies get angry that the Gorillaz chorus was cribbed from "Sunny Afternoon"? I seem to remember that.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago) link

I never heard about that, all the chatter I ever heard was about the vocal melody strongly resembling U2's "Staring At The Sun"

"Only" is one of the few NIN singles whose groove is slinky enough for me to forget who's singing and writing the lyrics.

E-Pro and Gorillaz are both top notch - also like Holiday. Voting Beck for aging just a bit better than Gorillaz.

Wow, this list is amazing: like the period in the 80s when the rock charts were saturated by people like Springsteen, Bowie, Plant, Collins, except that even then, there was some room for younger artists. Did MCR/FOB/P!ATD not score #1 hits or did their hits go #1 in 2006?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 14 June 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

the last Killers album was pretty big on alt-rock radio, but didn't cross over like the first two, they just haven't been out in a while. but half the new bands on alt radio now sound like the Killers, i think they're still 'relevant' in some sense there.

"Dare" was a better single off that Gorillaz album, IMO. The whole album is actually pretty great.

beck and gorillaz tracks are still decent, and i'm pretty sure i liked at least one of those NIN songs

voted "best of you"

Yeah, I liked it a lot at the time but haven't revisited it recently.

Yeah I was big into "Dare" at the time, loved the Shaun Ryder guest spot too, it just makes so much sense

Either way I voted "Feel Good" on the grounds that it's really the only decent song here besides "E-Pro" or maybe the NIN tunes, but holy shit I can't believe Green Day had those two horrible #1s in the same year, or that Weezer scored a big hit with "Beverly Hills" despite it actually being the worst song of all time

frogbs, Thursday, 14 June 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

Nah. Holiday is by far late GD at their most tolerable. It must bee some act of grace that Wake Me Up When September Ends didn't make #1 on these charts.

Voted "Only"

i did a blog countdown of modern rock #1s this year, intrigued to see the next seven years worth cuz i have no idea what they are

da croupier, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

just realized all these #1s are from folks who were bigger in the 90s (in damon's case at least in the uk)

I think I still listened at this point... I actually remember enjoying 2005 music at the time, but I later recognized that most of what I liked were lingering singles and slow-burners from 2004 and earlier...
http://www.radiohitlist.com/KROQ/KROQ-2005.htm

these are ok...
The Killers "Mr Brightside" (even though it's not all that popular around here)
The Bravery "Honest Mistake"
System Of A Down "BYOB" (def would've voted for this)
My Chemical Romance "Helena"
Queens of the Stone Age "Little Sister"
Interpol "Evil" & "Narc"
Fall Out Boy "Dance Dance" (embarrassed about this one)
Franz Ferdinand "Do You Want To"
Arcade Fire "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)"

I'm noticing far more leftovers from the previous year, compared to past annual playlists... many dating back to 2003... which I think is a lot more commonplace on new rock stations these days.

The Killers "Mr Brightside" (even though it's not all that popular around here)

the Thin White Duke remix was my single of the year.

"Evil" made my list too -- one of the few Interpol songs where they apply the eyeliner and do the sex jive just right.

also not listed, but received airplay elsewhere
Nada Surf "Blankest Year"
The Click Five "Just The Girl"
The Darkness "One Way Ticket"
Bloodhoung Gang "Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo"
Beck "Black Tambourine"

im mostly posting these because literally every one of these polls so far has generated several "worst year ever" posts which is getting kinda tedious.

billstevejim, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:52 (twelve years ago) link

just realized all these #1s are from folks who were bigger in the 90s (in damon's case at least in the uk)

Ha, OTM, what I was trying to get at earlier. Didn't take too long for modern rock to become classicist!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:02 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i hadn't seen your earlier post when i wrote that

sadly, "Foxtrot" and that Darkness album didn't get nearly enough airplay

he counts in the US too just off "Song 2"

"There's No Other Way" and "Girls and Boys" also big on modern rock radio (charted Hot 100 too).

haha -- nothing screams "2005" more than "Honest Mistake."

otm

mississippi joan hart (crüt), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

well yeah but "Girls And Boys" was not remotely as big in the US as "Feel Good Inc" whereas "Song 2" is just slightly less popular than "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:19 (twelve years ago) link

Feel Good Inc got played the fuck out and now I hate it

i feel about Albarn the way other people on this board feel about, like, Corgan. fuck that guy x infinity.

oh ok I get you

I'm actually pretty surprised that some of those, e.g. the Gorillaz and NIN songs, were bigger than "Mr Brightside" and "Sugar We're Going Down".

xpost

I got a stack of Blur albums that I'm never inspired to play, so I'm in the same boat these days. When I want to applaud him for being a producer-generalist of good taste I'm struck by how many of his projects are gestures instead of being interesting themselves. Kind of like Blur, I guess.

yeah i just think of him as being a 'tasteful' 'eclectic' guy who doesn't actually bring much to the table + i hate his voice

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

i think he's pretty overrated but I consider the s/t blur album my favorite pavement album post '95 and his singles are usually pretty hooky

da croupier, Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:47 (twelve years ago) link

albarn sucks, blur sucks

Hamburger Hitler (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 15 June 2012 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

i don't really feel any antipathy towards albarn or corgan as people (ok maybe a bit towards corgan, but just a bit) even tho they've both done some terrible shit

Beck, "E-Pro"
Nine Inch Nails, "The Hand That Feeds"
Gorillaz, "Feel Good, Inc."
Nine Inch Nails, "Only"

these are all great

voted "Boulevard"

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 15 June 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

rarely have i felt more tricked into liking a song by it sampling a much better song than i did by "E-Pro" using the "So Whatcha Want" drums

bronytheus (some dude), Friday, 15 June 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

also today i was speeding up the highway rocking out to "Blister In The Sun," and immediately afterward the station played a promo for an upcoming Weezer show and i unthinkingly started singing along with the clip of "Beverly Hills" because i will still caught up in the fun of singing along to the Violent Femmes, and suddenly remembered i hate "Beverly Hills" and felt very betrayed and ashamed

bronytheus (some dude), Friday, 15 June 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

the songs on Guero I really dig are "Missing", "Black Tambourine" and "Broken Drum"

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 15 June 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

"Scarecrow" is my favorite.

"Missing" is a great track. Also loved the Mad Magazine fold-in video for "Girl."

ha i looked at that list and thought 'so 05 is when what's left of modern rock radio goes all in on 90s holdouts huh?' and then looked at that guero thread and here i am blathering on: talking out of my ass here (and only here) but i wonder if beck is reaping the benefits of what's left of alt-rock radio's really longing for embracing 'hey remember the 90s' - i know one station in atlanta really pushes the 'hits of the 90s' angle in their ads and the local onetime active rock station recently switched it's playlist to go whatever you call that alt with a dash of classic format (in atlanta it's called 'dave'; basically 'you don't need satellite radio, we can play LOTS of songs geared toward 35 yr old not-quite-yuppie males too!') has put things back in rotation i ain't heard in too long a while (ie. better than ezra). my friend (who works at this radio station though he mainly focuses/cares about the sportstalk station) and i were riding to see dukes of hazzard yesterday and he mentioned they'd made the switch - 'considerably less classic rock, more alt, more new rock, yes to john mayer no to papa roach, nu metal's gone' - and we switched to it to hear it and they were playing...robert palmer 'i didn't mean to turn you on'? him - 'they're still working out the kinks'. next song played: beck 'girl'. - btw this station is now an fm talk radio station, like so many other modern rock stations before it. someone (shipley?) should really do a piece (one where they actually do some journalism, talk to some industry ppl, look up some numbers, not just conjecture - i can do that) on the rise of fm talk radio and other radio responses/adaptations to ipods, pandora, spotify, etc.

balls, Sunday, 17 June 2012 00:58 (twelve years ago) link

fm talk radio is a development i love cuz the am reception in my car is horrible
