Modern Rock #1 Hits of 2006

Our series through Billboard's #1 Modern Rock hits continues with 2006 – and we're almost to the present day. I personally had tuned out most of what was on alt-rock radio by this point.

Some notable #2 hits from 2006 that just missed the top spot include Tool's "Vicarious" and Muse's "Starlight" – my personal favorite of their big singles (even though the hook is a little too easy).

As with the past couple of years, the '90s reunion continues! I still think it's weird that Pearl Jam didn't hit #1 with some of their most memorable songs ("Jeremy," "Even Flow," "Betterman," "Elderly Woman," etc.), instead topping the chart with weird tracks like "Who You Are" and now "World Wide Suicide."

probably the best year of #1s in the past decade imo -- could vote for "Perfect Situation" or "When You Were Young" or "Hypnotize" or "Anna-Molly"

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

I still love that Killers tune.

I have a secret weakness for that Weezer song. The hook is so strong, it seems like one of those melodies that's been around forever.

LimbsKing, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

"When You Were Young"

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

last three are all killer

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

love the PJ song too

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

That Killers song is awesome. I have a huge soft spot for the MCR song. It's actually the only MCR song I know but I LOVE it.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know which one is the best, but i voted for "when you were young" just because i've been listened to it a lot over the past two days or so

markers, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

also, i've been listening to

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

gonna vote "anna-molly" because it probably won't get any other votes otherwise

light grenades is seriously the best incubus album if you toss "love hurts"

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

ok i'm gonna vote for The Killers in hopes of helping it defeat "Welcome To The Black Parade"

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

since "when you were young" is prob gonna win i'm gonna vote for "black parade"

I voted "Anna-Molly." That album had great singles, especially "Dig" and "Oil & Water."

LimbsKing, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah "Dig" is great

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

"When You Were Young" had this great turnaround from sounding absurd and awful at verse to like wait no this is awesome

I'm with Jordan - When You Were Young won't need any help. Voted Black Parade.

Voting "Anna-Molly".

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

surprised by the outpouring of Incubus enthusiasm after the anemic turnout for Incubus singles poll

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know enough Incubus to vote in a singles poll, but I like "Anna-Molly" the most out of these songs.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

I would have voted "Stellar." Am I closet Incubus fan and not know it???

LimbsKing, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

"When You Were Young" had this great turnaround from sounding absurd and awful at verse to like wait no this is awesome

much as i love the record this description applies to basically every song on sam's town

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

magnificent karaoke anthem too

Black Parade. That's how much this list sucks.

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

Granted, still way better than the mook rock of 99-02 (or thereabouts).

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

lol here I was thinking it was super obvious that NIN was the best of these

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

i took the less obvious pick in the past couple ones but 'when you were young' is just that good here

ciderpress, Monday, 18 June 2012 15:52 (thirteen years ago)

SOAD, no hesitation.

The opening build & release is magnificent, and the first folky instrumental bridge is nuts.

That Final Fantasy section is pretty great.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

Also great SOAD form this period: "BYOB."

LimbsKing, Monday, 18 June 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

i've definitely said this before but aside from "hypnotize" and "byob" the choices for singles from those two records was totally bizarre, especially since like 80% of mezmerize is total hooks

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 18 June 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

imo as a rule every 1st single from SOAD albums >>> every other single

some dude, Monday, 18 June 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

Radio/Video and Lost in Hollywood should've been singles.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 18 June 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

lol this list

a firestorm to purify

there isn't a single song on this list I really like. gonna have to sit this one out.

the SOAD and My Chem songs are goon-rock canon

Al you are insane. Granted, I already admitted that I don't think I have ever heard another MCR song but I can say with absolute certainty that TBP is their best.

;p

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 02:05 (thirteen years ago)

Pretty good list, magnificent compared to the previous 00s lists. Voted MCR over Killers (although I'd take AFI's Decemberunderground over The Black Parade easily). I like the songs by SoaD, Foo Fighters, AFI, Raconteurs, and Pearl Jam. I have fond memories of drunkenly singing along to a lot of this shit with my roommate and neighbour in 06-07.

I never liked The Black Parade nearly as much as Three Cheers but I'm surprised that "Welcome..." wouldn't appeal at all to someone who loved the earlier album. It's not "Helena" but nothing is.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:27 (thirteen years ago)

I never bothered to check out Mesmerize/Hypnotize, I think because I didn't find the singles as compelling as those from Toxicity. This thread is making me think I should give them a shot some time.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)

yeah they're solid records, def worth hearing for any fans of the first 2 albums. some days Mezmerize is my favorite SOAD album.

some dude, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

Not feeling this list at all. Voting AFI just because I like their first couple of records, so I might as well.

Regional Tug (irrational), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

only recognize like half these titles, but the ones i do recognize all gargle turds

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

Voting Anna Molly just over the SOAD tune.

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 04:24 (thirteen years ago)

I have never heard "Tell Me Baby," "Anna-Molly," "The Animal I've Become" or even knew that a band named 10 Years existed. I feel like dancing.

da croupier, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

"DOA" "Perfect Situation" & "World Wide Suicide" would some of the better later songs by those guys, but I think I have to go with "When We Were Young"

da croupier, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

10 Years is the first band since the early '90s I had never heard of when compiling this list.

K-Rock in New York played "Cigaro" a month or so before playing "BYOB" and I recall thinking it was the heaviest song to ever receive such frequent spins on a major commercial rock station, which might be correct.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

I've grown to enjoy MCR's "Teenagers."

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

yeah "Dead!" and "Teenagers" are aight but the album as a whole is a wash imo. last album was great but nobody cared because they took 4 fuckin years to make it.

teenagers is awesome

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of thought "Teenagers" was the hokiest thing on there, actually. On the other hand, it's one of the only two songs I remember from the album so that's something.

SOAD's "Sugar" seemed pretty atonal and frenzied for alt-rock stations back in 1999 to me.

LimbsKing, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah, i totally didn't get them at first -- my cooler-than-i-realized-at-the-time friend who also played me Aquemeni for the first time had to convince me of how great "Sugar" was

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

I have to admit that Gerard Way's vocals aren't really holding up as great as I might have liked.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

ha Sugar might still be SOAD's finest moment

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

"Sugar" is great (but is surely not atonal). Crystallizes all the things I like about them: clever range of vocal styles, stop-start rhythmic mania, weirdly hooky dissonant riff.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 25 June 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe because I was just listening for hooks, without expecting it to be more like Three Cheers? Not sure what the difference is.
