Modern Rock #1 Hits of 2007

Some chart records to note: Linkin Park's "What I've Done" is only the third – and the most recent – song to debut at #1. Also, the Foo Fighters' "The Pretender" currently holds the record for most weeks at #1 – with 18!

Some notable #2 hits from 2007 that just missed the top spot include the Smashing Pumpkins' comeback "Tarantula" and two of Linkin Park's more atypical singles, "Bleed It Out" and "Shadow of the Day."

This list really sucks, might have to go Foo.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

"Icky Thump" or "Paralyzer"

da croupier, Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

^^

went with "Paralyzer." "The Pretender" and "Anna-Molly" are good too.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

Hilarious to me how many #1 hits NIN had in the aughts compared to his zero in the '90s.

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:34 (thirteen years ago)

oof

well i'm gonna vote "snow"

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

that is definitely the worst song here by some distance

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

it bears mentioning that RHCP's next single after "Snow"'s "hey oh, listen what I say oh" was "hey now, we got to make it rain somehow"

Hilarious to me how many #1 hits NIN had in the aughts compared to his zero in the '90s.

I find this truly bizarre as well.

I'll almost definitely vote for "Icky Thump" since it's fantastic. I still like the 30 Seconds to Mars well enough though. I really enjoyed that album at the time. (I'm the only ILMer who did, as far as I know. See also: Decemberunderground.) Aside from Finger Eleven and Three Days Grace, neither of which I like, and the Incubus, which I only know because of the 2006 poll, I don't remember the rest of these.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

"Icky Thump" is one of the worst here! (maybe not true. they're all the worst) But seriously, how many times do people hear that song and not wish it was just a straight up cover of "Black Betty" instead?

frogbs, Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

Three Days Grace -- the most anonymous band to score multiple #1 hits on this chart in the past decade.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

this is probably the worst list so far, though i don't remember how 'icky thump' goes so maybe it's good/?

ciderpress, Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

I'm voting NIN even though I'm not super fond of "Survivalism" because I love Year Zero, esp. the remix album.

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard that Incubus song but the pun is making my head hurt

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know a single one of those songs.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

HAHAHA on Incubus pun.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

"Black Betty" + organ jams sounds great to me!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

Are the 00s NIN albums worth hearing if I like The Downward Spiral (but never loved it like so many do)? The only one I know is The Slip, which was not bad iirc.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

Do you like other White Stripes songs/albums, frogbs?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

In general I'm okay with them, teeter towards "dislike" but outside of NIN I'd sure as hell buy one of their albums over anyone else on the list

frogbs, Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:08 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't heard a single one of these? RHCP had a song about snow? Get the fuck out of town!

thread is p much urine (how's life), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

I'm usually pretty lukewarm about the Foo Fighters, but Pretender is a great song.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

Lol. "Icky Thump" all the way.

Year Zero was a concept album about paranoid right-wing rednecks, y/n?

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

(That lol was for how's life btw)

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

"paralyzer" is soooooo fuckinnnngggg badddddddd. send-a-terminator-back-in-time-to-prevent-its-being-recorded bad

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

at first i was gonna vote icky thump but upon reflection i went with What I've Done. im starting to feel like i might be the most ardent LP defender on this board, which, lol

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

Torn between not wanting to vote at all on such a shit list and wanting to vote fr anything but the chili peppers track.

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

that is definitely the worst song here by some distance

eh i enjoy the frusciante-driven pop peppers. still think by the way is cool, frusciante's solo material around this time is incredible, etc.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

worst song on here by some distance is "pain"

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah Paralyzer is probably my pick for worst song on here

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

"Icky Thump" all the way.

^

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

can't stand any of these, but yes the three days grace song is probably the worst

teledyldonix, Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

god that RHCP song is so terrible

the finger eleven song is the jam tho

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

lol i remember the rhcp song being listed on itunes with two sets of parentheses around the subtitle. revolutionary.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

god that RHCP song is so terrible

Yes, horribly lazy even by their latter-day standards.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

Had "Icky Thump" in my Top 10 that year, so I can vote in this one. That whole Linkin Park/Staind/Incubus heyday really passed me by.

clemenza, Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

the finger eleven song is the jam tho

the toe-jam, lol.

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

i like the guitar on snow hey oh

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

Paralyzer is like a all-whimper Trampled Underfoot

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

Icky Thump is literally the only one of these songs I have ever heard. So.

Julie Derpy (Phil D.), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

boy do i hate "paralyzer" but that's probably symptomatic of hearing it constantly while i was working at a carvel

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

Paralyzer

fanute gingrich (The Reverend), Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

rev and j0rdan know where the goon rock is at

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know what "goon rock" is but I'm pretty sure I don't care for it

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

I thought goon rock was, like, Limp Bizkit. "Paralyzer" = for girls.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 21 June 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

'goon rock' is whiney's hilarious made up genre name for rock records that dudes on the ilx rap threads tend to agree on

also the name of the guy who sang the chorus of "party rock anthem"

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Thursday, 21 June 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

paralyzer sounds like electric six ripping off franz ferdinand aka my cup of tea

da croupier, Thursday, 21 June 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

still tempted to go with icky thump, though

da croupier, Thursday, 21 June 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

'icky thump' aptly describes pretty much all these songs, now that i think about it

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Thursday, 21 June 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

"One Thing" was a much better, and much different, song by Finger Eleven that sounds nothing like "Paralyzer." And kudos to whomever pointed out the "Trampled Under Foot" ripoff.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 21 June 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

I'll gladly accept those whomever kudos!

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 21 June 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

"One Thing" is godawful

fanute gingrich (The Reverend), Thursday, 21 June 2012 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

Ha I was going to troll J0rdan or sd with "One Thing". It's kind of like nu-metal/alt-rock's "I Want It That Way" w/r/t to just crazy meta-abstract lyrics

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 22 June 2012 05:29 (thirteen years ago)

'icky thump' aptly describes pretty much all these songs, now that i think about it

I think I agree.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 22 June 2012 06:27 (thirteen years ago)

i like "One Thing" -- the first time i heard it i thought 'wow, i didn't think Limp Bizkit were capable of such a pretty ballad'

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 10:29 (thirteen years ago)

Year Zero was a concept album about paranoid right-wing rednecks, y/n?

Y, and it has at least to stone classics ("God Given", "The Great Destroyer")

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 11:53 (thirteen years ago)

I really like The Good Soldier off it.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 22 June 2012 12:28 (thirteen years ago)

i am forever butting heads with DJP whenever Year Zero comes up but for me it's their worst album and the only later NIN not worth checking out, "My Violent Heart" and the short instrumental intro being the only keepers

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 12:50 (thirteen years ago)

Nah, it's better than both With Teeth and The Slip.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 22 June 2012 13:01 (thirteen years ago)

The Slip is awesome

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

most NIN records sound so powerful and visceral, Year Zero is like laptop slurry

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 13:17 (thirteen years ago)

In fairness, I did say the remix album is better

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

basically I just love this to bits:

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

NIN's always had good remix projects, Further Down The Spiral was dope

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

year zero is good, love how "the great destroyer" breaks itself

i like the slip too but i'd probably think year zero is better in a universe where i'd be forced to evaluate that

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Friday, 22 June 2012 14:36 (thirteen years ago)

"Only," from a couple of song lists back, was by far the best thing later-day NIN has recorded.

LimbsKing, Friday, 22 June 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

I know that's the consensus but I really don't get it. It's easily my least favorite of the With Teeth singles.

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

yeah same here.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

trying to decide what I think the best latter-day NIN song is

probably "We're In This Together" or "Every Day Is Exactly The Same", even if I do have a massive soft spot for "The Great Destroyer"

(best instrumental is "Just Like You Imagined", hands down)

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno Ghosts I-IV is full of gems.

"1,000,000" is my favorite out of the 2008 output, which represents the bulk of my favorite post-'90s stuff

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

I've never fully digested Ghosts I-IV tbh

I am a terrible NIN fan

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

it's really good to just put on for one of the four sections at a time, or play a few tracks on shuffle, obviously a lot to digest on its own.
