IT'S THE SMASHING PUMPKINS EPICS POLL

used 6 and a half minutes as the cutoff point, since a lot of their songs are just under 7 minutes. there might be some demos or odds and ends here and there that I didn't include but I tried to cover anything from a major album/EP/single/comp.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

this is so clearly "Rhinoceros" IMO

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

Rhinoceros. These pretty much get steadily worse in chronological order but Rhinoceros is magnificent. I really like Drown and Soma as well.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

when I was in college I had a week where I thought "Silverfuck" was the greatest song in the world

I still like the song but I am trying to remember exactly what how much I was smoking when I had this epiphany

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:03 (thirteen years ago)

i'm going to have to go with Drown here.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

"soma" is their greatest song in my view. all the math really works on that one, and i wouldn't change a note. ten years ago i might have gone with "thru the eyes of ruby" though.

charlie h, Friday, 22 June 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

although "she knows, she knows, she knows hoes" is a great chorus I've never really connected with "Rhinoceros," feels more like a by-the-numbers power ballad than some of the more structurally ambitious songs here

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

a lot of these sounded like the greatest song in the world to me the first few times I heard them -- "Silverfuck," "Drown," "Starla," "Porcelina" -- need to really listen and figure out which ones have aged the best

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

i am the dude voting for "for martha" and seriously considering voting for "glass and the ghost children" okay bye

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

The genius of Rhinoceros is all in the bass and the guitars imo. Fuck "structural ambition".

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

also i had "porcelina" in my head all yesterday, man that song kills

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

"Rhinoceros" and "Bury Me" are the two songs that keep Smashing Pumpkins firmly in my heart; I loved Adore when it first came out but the last time I tried to listen to it, it had not aged well at all

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

Soma - one of my favourite SP songs

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

Everyone bangs on about Mayonaise, but it's a poor man's Soma in my view.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

Starla no question. their best song imho

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

favorite moment = the siren

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

couldn't remember how "X.Y.U." went -- wow there are some serious duds buried in the depths of Mellon Collie

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

i love that "Drown" was their highest charting song before Siamese Dream -- lot of radio stations used to play the whole long thing, but these days when it does get spins it always seems to be the 4-minute radio edit, and it's really bumming me out right now that that's the only version available on Spotify

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

listening to "glass and the ghost children" off the strength of the homie brad but oh god no spoken word interlude nooooo

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

is 'geek usa' not an epic?

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 22 June 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

can always listen to the full version on the youtubes

album version is 5:13 so by running time standards yeah not in contention, needs another 80 seconds of dreamy denouement

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that slow interlude in the middle makes it feel longer

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 22 June 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

This is really tough for me; I think I've narrowed it down to Starla vs. Ruby

Oh shit I just noticed Hummer

robert mcnamara in reverse (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 22 June 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

'Thru The Eyes Of Ruby'. Fucking hell, that was a difficult choice.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 22 June 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

listening to "glass and the ghost children" off the strength of the homie brad but oh god no spoken word interlude nooooo

sorry dude! to be fair the piano part that plays below it is really pretty, and man, the riffs in the first section of the song!

easy vote for drown, feedback solo is killer

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 22 June 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't even read the list i just looked for "soma" and clicked because c'mon guys

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

haha i've never seen a poll thread where so many different options are singled out as the obvious no duh you guys choice

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

Pastichio Medley, so many great riffs and moments, like being a fly on the wall at the MCIS sessions.
More serious answer: Soma

windjammer voyage (blank), Friday, 22 June 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

lonely challopsy vote for For Martha - maybe the only genuinely touching thing Corgan ever wrote, with a great solo to boot. I heart Adore disproportionately though

Simon H., Friday, 22 June 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

"Soma" just over "Hummer"

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 22 June 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda between Starla and Drown for me. Feedback solo or crazy wah-shredfest. Gonna have to think about it. At this point in my life I am most interested in B.Corgan shutting up and playing guitar if it wasn't clear here.

grandavis, Friday, 22 June 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

Drown obv, p much the only SP tune I've ever loved

Euler, Friday, 22 June 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

LOL I'd never heard 'Drown' before today, great song. This is easily 'Hummer' for me though, 'Porcelina' and 'Rhinoceros' in 2nd and 3rd place.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 22 June 2012 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

"Drown", easy.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 22 June 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

I love a TON of these obviously but as far as best epic goes I'm torn between Soma and Starla

Honestly, a full on SP tracks poll should be in line by now.

Moka, Saturday, 23 June 2012 05:26 (thirteen years ago)

you know what, "oceania" off the new album is a great song. not near being one of the best on this list, but for a band whose releases i've paid literally no attention to for a over a decade, it's kind of remarkable.

charlie h, Saturday, 23 June 2012 06:50 (thirteen years ago)

voted silverfuck for what they did to it live

toandos, Saturday, 23 June 2012 06:58 (thirteen years ago)

agreed, even though most of the rest of the new record is zzzzz and man that new drummer is terrible

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Saturday, 23 June 2012 07:00 (thirteen years ago)

yes, he is terrible and the drums actually sound like shit for the most part too. the sequencing on the album is quite strange. i find it picks up in the second half after a really bland start, like it's gathering steam as it goes along.

charlie h, Saturday, 23 June 2012 07:16 (thirteen years ago)

Actually had I thought about it I might have voted for Hummer, it's one of the few that doesn't feel like a huge ostentatious epic.

Thru The Eyes of Ruby is pretty great as well.

Matt DC, Saturday, 23 June 2012 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

voted "Hummer" because i thought it was "Mayonaise," still good enough though.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 04:40 (thirteen years ago)

Siamese Dream is really one of those albums where you can know the whole thing note for note and still have trouble identifying all the songs by their titles

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

Hummer for the closing guitar solo.

Jesu swept (ledge), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 10:04 (thirteen years ago)

Siamese Dream is really one of those albums where you can know the whole thing note for note and still have trouble identifying all the songs by their titles

OTM, too many one-word song names.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 10:35 (thirteen years ago)

i used to think that one of the songs on Siamese Dream was called "soma geek usa", because of how the song titles were written on the back cover.

charlie h, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 11:21 (thirteen years ago)

Where the fuck is Myonaise(sic). Best song they (was it him or Iha?) will ever do

I was never a big fan so wtfdiK

Soma > Mayonaise

mississippi joan hart (crüt), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:03 (thirteen years ago)

Went with feedback.

grandavis, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

Rolling Stone did a SP songs readers poll: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures/readers-poll-the-best-smashing-pumpkins-songs-20120613

epics are ranked as Mayonaise > Soma > Hummer > Ruby > Drown > Porcelina > Rhinoceros > Starla

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

n/m Mayonaise isn't in this poll

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

my heart says X.Y.U. for lots of middle school headphone freakouts but Rhinoceros seems the most epic of these tracks.

skip, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

I was just saying like. I am not a fan of this band. At all. But Siamese Dream was ok and I still think Mayo is an excellent song.

I don't give a fuck about the lyrics. I'm betting that they are shit. But, the tune is top.OK?

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

lyrics are definitely shit. learning what the chorus to "Cherub Rock" was actually saying was such a letdown that i'm afraid to every look up any other SP lyrics.

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

goddamnit, I thought it was "who walks behind me".

the dave cool channel you are supposed to watch (how's life), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

"Mayonaise" very easily won the Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream poll we did.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

Apologies to all. I never read the detail. Enjoy yr poll

But Hummer it is then

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

jessie fer ark i don't think anyone's mad at you or taking issue w/ your posts, we're just shooting the shit

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

Lyrics to CR are def shit; one of the big reasons I don't really fuxxor w that song

can you believe they put a man otm (loves laboured breathing), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

Drown
Hummer
Rhinoceros

in descending order

BradNelson maybe

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

I cannot really imagine a late-period Corgan song named "Superchrist" being anything other than a slog (or unintentional self-parody) though I could be wrong.

grandavis, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

think there was talk on here about a bunch of people actually liking "superchrist" but it is literally a slog

i definitely voted for "for martha," it is still really gorgeous

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

but hey i also almost voted for "shame"

that bassline!

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

I don't really notice the lyrics to Cherub Rock because Corgan's voice is processed to fuck, and it's not Crystal by New Order.
