Rhinoceros. These pretty much get steadily worse in chronological order but Rhinoceros is magnificent. I really like Drown and Soma as well.

i'm going to have to go with Drown here.

"soma" is their greatest song in my view. all the math really works on that one, and i wouldn't change a note. ten years ago i might have gone with "thru the eyes of ruby" though.

although "she knows, she knows, she knows hoes" is a great chorus I've never really connected with "Rhinoceros," feels more like a by-the-numbers power ballad than some of the more structurally ambitious songs here

a lot of these sounded like the greatest song in the world to me the first few times I heard them -- "Silverfuck," "Drown," "Starla," "Porcelina" -- need to really listen and figure out which ones have aged the best

i am the dude voting for "for martha" and seriously considering voting for "glass and the ghost children" okay bye

The genius of Rhinoceros is all in the bass and the guitars imo. Fuck "structural ambition".

"Rhinoceros" and "Bury Me" are the two songs that keep Smashing Pumpkins firmly in my heart; I loved Adore when it first came out but the last time I tried to listen to it, it had not aged well at all

Everyone bangs on about Mayonaise, but it's a poor man's Soma in my view.

couldn't remember how "X.Y.U." went -- wow there are some serious duds buried in the depths of Mellon Collie

i love that "Drown" was their highest charting song before Siamese Dream -- lot of radio stations used to play the whole long thing, but these days when it does get spins it always seems to be the 4-minute radio edit, and it's really bumming me out right now that that's the only version available on Spotify

album version is 5:13 so by running time standards yeah not in contention, needs another 80 seconds of dreamy denouement

Kinda between Starla and Drown for me. Feedback solo or crazy wah-shredfest. Gonna have to think about it. At this point in my life I am most interested in B.Corgan shutting up and playing guitar if it wasn't clear here.

you know what, "oceania" off the new album is a great song. not near being one of the best on this list, but for a band whose releases i've paid literally no attention to for a over a decade, it's kind of remarkable.

agreed, even though most of the rest of the new record is zzzzz and man that new drummer is terrible

yes, he is terrible and the drums actually sound like shit for the most part too. the sequencing on the album is quite strange. i find it picks up in the second half after a really bland start, like it's gathering steam as it goes along.

Actually had I thought about it I might have voted for Hummer, it's one of the few that doesn't feel like a huge ostentatious epic.

Thru The Eyes of Ruby is pretty great as well.
