Nothing much to say here, other than Weezer had its umpteenth comeback and the Foo Fighters continued their unceasing run at the top. And who woulda guessed Seether would have back-to-back #1's?

Had to go iPhone... I mean, Coldplay.

LimbsKing, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)

Pet Shop Boys cover of "Vida La Vida" is far better though

can you believe they put a man otm (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

"Long Road To Ruin" is like 10 times better than any one of these:

such is life in the zone

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

a foo fighters song can never be better than anything. "Fake It" is the most tolerable seether song so that

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

lol no

wow 2007 and 2008 were not good years for modern rock #1s

teledyldonix, Friday, 29 June 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

'08 was maybe the worst year for modern rock #1s, modern rock singles in general, and charting singles in general

goonrise zingdom (some dude), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

not for me. can't vote for any of these.

charlie h, Friday, 29 June 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

LRtR is the best

So there are circumstances under which I'd vote for coldplay after all.

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Friday, 29 June 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

i've actually never heard of seether. are they named after the veruca salt song?

charlie h, Friday, 29 June 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

probably, they have singles that are ripped off from Alanis Morissette and Republica songs

goonrise zingdom (some dude), Friday, 29 June 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

in that case, i've probably heard them on the radio at some point. sounds like a familiar formula.

kind of scary that puddle of mudd were still making waves as recently as 2008.

charlie h, Friday, 29 June 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

I've learned from this sequence of polls a fact about which I had no idea, which is that Foo Fighters have been consistently, massively popular for a really long time and continue to be.

I was going to ask that same question about Seether! I think I still love that Veruca Salt song -- would I, if I listened to it now?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 29 June 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

I had no idea the Offspring had such a big career revival.

Seether, "Fake It" - worst album cover
Foo Fighters, "Long Road to Ruin" - these guys are machines
Puddle of Mudd, "Psycho" - professional and paint by numbers, sounds like a #1 despite being really boring
Seether, "Rise Above This" - initial guitar line is actually quite nice and affirming. With a different vocalist I might like this.
Weezer, "Pork and Beans" - that pitchfork review asking whether Weezer was actually a good band in the 90s or we were just in middle school and didn't know better is more relevant with every new Weezer album
Foo Fighters, "Let It Die" - much more boring than the other one
Coldplay, "Viva La Vida" - strange guitar-less #1. Super catchy. Animal Collective should sound more like this.
Staind, "Believe" - this is the most country out of all the modern rock #1 tracks yet
Offspring, "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" - nice Bad Religion-esque backing track in the chorus. If you don't listen to the lyrics not half bad.
Kings of Leon, "Sex on Fire" - these guys are terminally boring

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm voting Coldplay.

THIS SEX IS ON FIRE

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know why, but "strange guitar-less #1" made me laugh. (I also voted Coldplay.)

Songs that were both Modern Rock #1 hits and Hot 100 #1 hits:

1990 - Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares 2 U"
1998 - Barenaked Ladies, "One Week"
2001 - Crazytown, "Butterfly"
2001 - Nickelback, "How You Remind Me"
2008 - Coldplay, "Viva La Vida"
2012 - fun, "We Are Young"
2012 - Gotye, "Somebody That I Used to Know"

A weird truth I recently discovered about Veruca Salt, that would have been anathema in the late 90s, is that "Eight Arms to Hold You" >>>>>>> "American Thighs." So the short answer is, "No."

Julie Derpy (Phil D.), Friday, 29 June 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

I like both the VS records pretty equally, and for entirely different reasons.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

How many modern rock #1 tracks have no guitars?

skip, Friday, 29 June 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

Foo Fighters have been consistently, massively popular for a really long time and continue to be.

A week or two ago, I was talking to someone six years younger than me who was stunned when I told her that Dave Grohl used to be a member of Nirvana. (Similarly, I've talked to people about eight years younger than me who love Dave Navarro's work with RHCP and had never heard of Jane's Addiction.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 29 June 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

Good question. I think a lot from the early days... Siouxie and the Banshees, Big Audio Dynamite, maybe the Depeche Mode songs? Sinead O'Connor?

the latter is especially funny because "Aeroplane" is the only Navarro-era RHCP song that gets any airplay and not remotely as much as "Jane Says" or "Been Caught Stealing"

goonrise zingdom (some dude), Friday, 29 June 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

tbf, Navarro's relationship to RHCP is probably something they remember from youth, but mostly just know him as an annoying pop culture constant.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 June 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i could see people who don't even remember One Hot Minute just knowing him as the androgynous reality TV guy who was married to Carmen Electra

goonrise zingdom (some dude), Friday, 29 June 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

Sure. These guys really were RHCP fans who admired Navarro's playing though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 29 June 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
