Nightlife = the only great album since IMHO as a massive PSB fan.

"Radiophonic" and "Vampires" the only duds on an otherwise wonderful record, bought at a marvelous time in my life. I'd just come out, was clubbing a lot, and knew exactly who the character is in "I Don't Know What You Want..." hurling those weary questions at his lover.

in "Footsteps" he answers his own questions (it's really a musical-indebted version of "Why Don't We Live Together").

tough choice between For Your Own Good, Vampires and Radiophonic but gotta go with Vampires i think.
a STUPIDLY under rated record (although not by most PSB fans), still in my Top 5 PSB albums.

xp haha Alfred hates 2 of my faves.

piscesx, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago)

I think it's uneven. "Radiophonic" definitely not a dud, but "Vampires" yes. "The Only One" and "Happiness Is An Option" are far from essential.
My favorites are "Closer To Heaven", "Don't Know What You Want...", "You Only Tell Me You Love Me...", and "Boy Strange".

My friend has long insisted that, NYC Boy aside *maybe*, there is absolutely nothing of worth at all on the second side, but the first side is absolutely glorious (including "Vampires").

This was the first proper PSB album I bought (week it came out in the US, as I was obsessed with Discography for the past year but never investigated the individual albums), and aforementioned friend and I first started talking when I went to a little record shop and bought it. Great friends ever since.

I've always repped for "Radiophonic". I think "The Only One" is good, and I have a great memories of singing "In Denial" with my friend when we had a shift in the library back in high school. "Footsteps" never a favourite, and always found "Boy Strange" to be awful. I'm leaning towards "Drunk", but "For Your Own Good" is a helluva opener, and the next two aren't bad either. It's a great sequence.

still waiting for George Jones to cover "You Only Tell Me You Love Me..."

yeah you're right about the sequencing Gukbe, shoddy sequencing is i think partly what did for Bilingual.

piscesx, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 22:46 (twelve years ago)

You know what? "Radiophonic" is okay. It's "Happiness is An Option," a fabulous title (which I stole for a short story) on a worrying letdown of a tune coming on the heels of "I Don't Know..."

I love the wonderfully wistful way he says "I think I'm in love" in "Radiophonic." Reminds me (despite sounding nothing like it) of "Send me an Angel."

still the only PSB album I haven't heard, bring on the next round of 2CD reissues imo

Tough choice between You Only Tell Me and I Don't Know What You Want, both classic singles. I have a soft spot for In Denial too.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 04:08 (twelve years ago)

I love "For Your Own Good" a little too much for my own good

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 04:26 (twelve years ago)

In Denial, because I think You Only Tell Me You Love Me will walk it without my help.

Get wolves (DL), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 12:04 (twelve years ago)

and "Closer to Heaven" needs help.

Lots of good ones here among a couple serious duds. I need to listen again but it will be among Don't Know What You Want, In Denial, NYC, and Closer to Heaven.

Like the odd trip-hop R&B of 'Happiness," like the drama of "Closer to Heaven," but I'll probably go with the sentiment of "Drunk" or the disco of "Don't."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 03:37 (twelve years ago)

bump before it closes

high five fellow Vampires fan!

piscesx, Thursday, 12 July 2012 01:29 (twelve years ago)

That's odd. I was sure I'd voted for In Denial.

Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 12 July 2012 09:28 (twelve years ago)

one year passes...

"Happiness Is An Option" doesn't really work, I'm thinking. But overall this feels like one of their best records at this instant. And the second half is much stronger than these results suggest, IMHO. Unfortunate that I never fully immersed myself in it until around the time of the artist poll a couple of years back.

I like the track "Nightlife" more than anything on here

though "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk" is quite nice

frogbs, Thursday, 4 February 2021 18:24 (four years ago)

Based on the assertion in this revive, I am listening to "Elysium" for the first time since it was released. Three songs in and I'm not sure I can make it to the end. By far their worst album, for me.

I don't think I even heard the whole "Agenda" EP but what I did hear was fairly wretched.
