Modern Rock #1 Hits of 2010

Our trip through the #1 Modern Rock hits of yesteryear continues today with 2010. I actually think this year is quite an improvement from the 2007-2009 lists. Plus: Black Keys!

Grunge flashback redux: Stone Temple Pilots finally have a #1 song nearly two decades after they broke through. Some of their biggest hits stalled out at #2 ("Vasoline," "Interstate Love Song," "Big Bang Baby") or #3 ("Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart," "Sour Girl").

I think it'll be "1901" in a landslide.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 5 July 2012 13:30 (twelve years ago) link

Uh, yeah. The rest of this list is sad.

I found him in a Bon Ton ad (Nicole), Thursday, 5 July 2012 13:32 (twelve years ago) link

"Kings And Queens" may be the single most embarrassing song i have endorsed in any of these polls

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 13:49 (twelve years ago) link

Not a fan of the playground chorus?

LimbsKing, Thursday, 5 July 2012 13:52 (twelve years ago) link

no i love the song, i'm just not proud to say so

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 13:57 (twelve years ago) link

letophilia is a crippling condition

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 13:58 (twelve years ago) link

i am generally letophobic, for some reason the song where he screams WE ARE THE QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENS is the exception

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

1901 is so much better than everything else I'm familiar with here that I'll vote for that. 30 seconds to mars track is like Toto's Africa plus low-grade Christian emo.

skip, Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

I just don't get Cage the Elephant. They wrote the same song 5 different times.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:24 (twelve years ago) link

I liked the Pixies pastiche album they put out in 2011

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

"1901". If I've heard Cage The Elephant, Neon Trees, Crash Kings, Dirty Heads or Mumford & Sons, I can't remember what they actually sound like. You could say I'm out of the loop, but you really have to go out of your way to get in the loop these days.

da croupier, Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

actually I should have heard mumford by now, all you have to do is watch the grammys i think

da croupier, Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

well having a non-classic rock station pre-programmed on your car radio doesn't seem that much like 'going out of your way' to me but yeah it's not like any of these besides the Neon Trees song have any kind of profile outside those stations.

the Cage The Elephant song that goes "it goes in one ear and right out the other" is the follow-up to the one that goes "there ain't no rest for the wicked, money don't grow on trees" -- they're like a musical cliche generator.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:30 (twelve years ago) link

"The Catalyst"

some dude nights (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:52 (twelve years ago) link

lmfao at anyone who votes GAPDY-weakest-link/shrill Daft Strokes fashion contest Phoenix over that righteous Linkin Park jam

some dude nights (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

Cliche generator... HA! Your forgot "Like a sittin' duck, just waitin' for the fall... You got my back against the wall."

LimbsKing, Thursday, 5 July 2012 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

I only voted Phoenix because I liked their car commercial

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

Phoenix are a car commercial

some dude nights (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 July 2012 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

I just realized going through the videos of these that I really enjoyed Radioactive as a radio-rock song that would come on in stores/driving/etc.

OMG at the Kings + Queens video though... Not a music video, a video "inspired" by the song that plays through it. Its so epically overdone in every way. CRITICAL MASS, MAN!

"Kings And Queens" sounded really hilarious and perfect in a Sunkist commercial btw

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

it's a shame there hasn't been any Keanu Reeves cyberpunk thriller lately for "The Catalyst" to be in the trailer of

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

"Radioactive" is definitely the closest i've ever come to not hating a Kings Of Leon song

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

ha Whiney reminds me that I still need to check out that Linkin Park album

heaven needed someone who rhymed with 'poop' (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

The Catalyst is their weirdest number-one... melody hard to find, and it gets all proggy at the end. Waiting for the End, coming up next week, is my favorite, I think.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago) link

Neon Trees has the only song here I have any memory of hearing, and I wouldn't vote for that song to do anything at all. Not even to fall into a black hole.

Julie Derpy (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:19 (twelve years ago) link

xpost It might be THE weirdest number one since like Siouxsie's "Peek-A-Boo"

some dude nights (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

it's about as 'weird' as The Muse songs on this list, has the same kind of cheesy rock opera sense of foreboding

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

Doesn't it completely switch tempos halfway through?

some dude nights (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

And there's like no guitars on it? I'm not saying its Borbetomagus or anything but it's certainly not Kings of Leon either

some dude nights (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i mean it's off the beaten path for LP somewhat. i think its length is its biggest roadblock to accessibility but i don't know if radio stations were playing a shorter edit since i never lasted 30 seconds.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago) link

I don't remember "The Catalyst" at all but my first impression is "lol someone thought 'Survivalism' was too challenging"

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

Doesn't it completely switch tempos halfway through?

no, the vocal goes all elagiac for the big coda. same tempo.

contenderizer, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

haha oh yeah it is kinda like "Survivalism," which was also an inert chore imo

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:04 (twelve years ago) link

also how is it hard to find the melody, it's one note repeated ad nauseum

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

(well okay there's an occasional whole step thrown in there)

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think i like any of these

i do remember that there was a promo contest for "catalyst" where you could download all the parts/loops and submit your own new version or remix or whatever. some musician friends were excited for about half a minute, but the song sucked so we never did anything with it.

contenderizer, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

man Leto is really Letoing all over this song, huh

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

which video was them basically re-enacting the movie "Hero"

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

the "We Are Young" of 2010

heaven needed someone who rhymed with 'poop' (loves laboured breathing), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

"From Yesterday," which was the follow-up to a video where they re-enacted The Shining -- it's like Leto just went 'fuck it, i'm never gonna be in a great movie so let's just pretend with these videos' (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

huh I have never heard "Resistance" either

oh wait just hit the chorus, I have heard this and it desperately needs to be punched in the face

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that chorus is appalling

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

every time I hear "Uprising" I ask myself "why was it that I hated Muse so much, I really dig this" but then I go "I must have had a good reason" and move on

I now remember my good reason

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

wtf is this Crash Kings bullshit

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, was anyone really dying for a "funky" version of The Fray

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:27 (twelve years ago) link

jesus fuck the more of these songs I explore, the more I despair for humanity

how the hell did this terrible Dirty Heads song reach #1 on anything besides "songs you should never, ever listen to"

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

okay, i lied, i do like "uprising", mostly for the depeche mode synths

contenderizer, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

well we're talking about a chart that suffered over a decade of Sublime withdrawal (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

featuring rome of sublime with rome

contenderizer, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

It sounds like Sublime, and the Brad Nowell replacement dude is singing.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

Depeche Mode really are like the most secretly influential band on rock radio today, between Muse and Linkin Park and that M83 song that has slowly become huge

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link

Some of these songs really do explain how Kings of Leon exploded and became so omnipresent for a while; if my options were between "Use Somebody"/"Radioactive" and fucking Dirty Heads/Crash Kings, I'd be keeping KoL on the top of the charts forever too and be totally suspicious of anyone not doing the same

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

ugh fucking Mumford & Sons

SET ME ON FIRE

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

still don't get pheonix

contenderizer, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

eh nobody ever went broke sounding like the strokes in this day and age

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

oh god i remember "kings and queens" being on commercials for some orange drink NONSTOP for a few months. words can't describe my hate for that song just because of that.

ummmm i'm voting for "tighten up" which is the only song i really liked from the black keys. i know liking it probably reveals how bad my taste is or something but oh well. phoenix never interested me much.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

"1901" has a great intro but the rest of the song doesn't really live up to it

I may feel this way because I heard the intro over and over in a cool car commercial

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

oh THIS is "Tighten Up"

jesus christ how many commercials featured these songs

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

which muse song is the one with the swung beat? i might vote for that it's alright

ive had the modern rock station on my presets forever, but for the past few years whenever i land on it while im idling flipping through stations i just end up listening to 3-5 seconds and switching to the next station

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 5 July 2012 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

yeah...also new music seems to be a much smaller % of their playlists than, say, urban stations or country stations or pop stations. but y'know, i was just saying. it's funny when people that know every song that's ever been on 'the forkcast' by heart are just alarmed that anyone is familiar with songs played on terrestrial radio.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

i totally get loving this linkin park era if you were raised on early '90s funk metal and say stuff like "yeah i used to fuck with 311"

da croupier, Thursday, 5 July 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

"Listzomania" >>> "1901" but I'm cool with French variations on Is This It

da croupier, Thursday, 5 July 2012 21:31 (twelve years ago) link
