Hot R&B #1 Hits 1990

enjoyed modern rock chart polls, considered doing the same w/ adult contemporary charts but due to likelihood of low turnout and certainty of polls w/ only four or five choices in more recent years decided to opt for r&b. also r&b #1s much much less likely to get as dire as modern rock or even ac #1s. somewhat arbitrarily decided to start w/ 1990, partly due to demographics of the board partly cuz that's when billboard changes the name of the chart from 'hot black singles' to 'hot r&b singles'. if anyone wants to start working backward by all means feel free, personally would have no problem w/ concurrent polls, i do think only one forward and one backward from 90 is best though. totally forgot how big after 7 were.

RIP Whitney. Voted Baby tonight.

Good idea with this chart. My Modern Rock posts will be done this week.

Voted for:

Quincy Jones with Al B. Sure!, James Ingram, El DeBarge and Barry White - The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite)

An amazing, underrated R&B classic and surely El's greatest moment between In a Special Way[ and last year's failed comeback.

but guys this is an amazing streak:

Mariah Carey - Vision of Love
The Time - Jerk Out
Tony! Toni! Toné! - Feels Good
En Vogue - Lies
The Boys - Crazy
Prince - Thieves in the Temple
Pebbles - Giving You the Benefit

and that's not counting Johnny Gill, Lisa Stansfield, Ralph Tresvant, and Babyface.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 July 2012 00:05 (twelve years ago)

ha ok wow glancing ahead this is pretty clearly the last pre-soundscan year (i should've remembered this); future ballots will have significantly fewer choices.

balls, Monday, 9 July 2012 00:06 (twelve years ago)

Here's where I pimp a good friend's blog, in which he counts down every eighties R&B #1.

is this the only year between 1985 and 1992 without a Freddie Jackson song at #1? Wow.

So incredibly tempted to pick up the baton from this and do every '90s R&B #1.

I can see your fame rising in the east like the sun

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 July 2012 00:26 (twelve years ago)

Briefly also thought about instead doing the 90s dance #1's, but that shit really DID change out songs every week.

frank o'sin (Eric H.), Monday, 9 July 2012 01:41 (twelve years ago)

the dance chart and how it is configured has been a bizarre mystery to me since i was a teen

balls, Monday, 9 July 2012 01:45 (twelve years ago)

i love that Phife references two of these songs in this poll ("Sensitivity" and "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)?") on A Tribe Called Quest's "Butter"

some dude, Monday, 9 July 2012 01:48 (twelve years ago)

could've been four, but Alexander O'Neal's "All True Man" peaked at #5 in 1991 and Heavy D's "Somebody For Me" hit #8 in '89

some dude, Monday, 9 July 2012 01:54 (twelve years ago)

and Babyface's "Whip Appeal" hit #2, but i dunno if Phife was explicitly referencing that song or just the phrase. i think i'm done now.

some dude, Monday, 9 July 2012 01:55 (twelve years ago)

Voted for The Time. Not that it's the best song on here, but I'll never be able to vote for The Time in another poll.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 9 July 2012 01:56 (twelve years ago)

I'm gonna take a little time and listen to every one of these, but "All Around the World" has the early advantage

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 9 July 2012 01:57 (twelve years ago)

until I discovered O'Neal in the early 2000's I thought Phife said "I'm Ultra Man like Alexander O'Neal."

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 July 2012 01:59 (twelve years ago)

ha i thought the same thing for a long time, too, like "ultra man" was some "bionic man"-type sci-fi show in my imagination

some dude, Monday, 9 July 2012 02:00 (twelve years ago)

as steeped in the Wu as I was at the time I thought eighties R&B singers had superhero/villain names too.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:08 (twelve years ago)

lol

some dude, Monday, 9 July 2012 02:13 (twelve years ago)

guys let's save the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0dGDUYZgJc talk for the 89 poll thx

balls, Monday, 9 July 2012 02:14 (twelve years ago)

god I love that song ^^^

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:15 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, never understood why the dance chart has a new #1 each week. People in clubs must have really short attention spans and DEMAND new songs.

LimbsKing, Monday, 9 July 2012 02:17 (twelve years ago)

when we're done with this poll we're running through the eighties and the rest of the nineties m'kay?

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:18 (twelve years ago)

radio moves slower than clubs. imo it'd be fun if every chart had to have a new #1 every week -- you had your turn, put the next song in line. (xpost)

some dude, Monday, 9 July 2012 02:18 (twelve years ago)

yeah i picked a start date somewhat out of a hat, actual chart starts as 'harlem race' chart (i think) in nineteen fortysomething. i think there'd be strong enough interest to go back as far as 70 easily, 60 possibly.

balls, Monday, 9 July 2012 02:25 (twelve years ago)

"Escapade," although I was busy with school that year and not all that attentive.

clemenza, Monday, 9 July 2012 02:28 (twelve years ago)

would this have been the year that "Love Would Never Do Without You" would have placed, because I would vote for that in a heartbeat

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:30 (twelve years ago)

ie "Love Will Never Do (Without You"

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago)

next year -- but it didn't #1 R&B

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago)

oh :/

t. s. idiot (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:32 (twelve years ago)

Many strong contenders; ultimately went with "Sensitivity". Among other reasons, I think it's played a part in a lot of music from the last decade, including Balearic revival, Chillwave (especially Washed Out), and some of the recent Indie/R&B. I can't think of anything else from this period that sounds quite as hazy, contemplative, nostalgic (PM Dawn maybe comes close)...

I remember how excited I would get every time I heard "Rhythm Nation"; that thing blew me away probably more than any MJ song, in terms of its massive scale, anyway. And I always thought Dawn from En Vogue just had the best face.

azaera, Monday, 9 July 2012 05:34 (twelve years ago)

IT'S TIME TO GIVE A DAMN LET'S WORK TOGETHER

horseshoe, Monday, 9 July 2012 05:39 (twelve years ago)

Lots of songs here that I've not listened to in years, stashed in the attic on 12". Initial feelings: it's between I'll Be Good To You, Hold On and It Never Rains (In Southern California). But I shall endeavour to revisit.

mike t-diva, Monday, 9 July 2012 08:47 (twelve years ago)

i voted "Sensitivity" in the end and azaera pretty well sums up how i feel about it

So many classics. I went with "Poison."

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Monday, 9 July 2012 17:46 (twelve years ago)

for years the sheer nastiness of "Poison" has led to serious reevaluation over the years.

not really, something can easily be a fav of the year w/o being a fav of the decade

I feel like the real tragedy of this poll is no chance to vote for "Whip Appeal"

four months pass...

"Show Me" is pretty incredible. Plenty of Janet, Johnny Gill, T!T!T!, BBD, and En Vogue on the radio these days, but so much of this stuff has faded away.

The list just above k3vin's post was made in a rush. This one (based on entry dates) was made with a lot more care:
