Our trip through the #1 Modern Rock hits of yesteryear continues today with 2011. (One week left until our countdowns are done.) We're still partying like it's 1995 with #1 songs by Bush, Foo Fighters, and the Chili Peppers this year.

We should also be celebrating the 300th #1 song on the chart next week... as of right now, there have been 299 #1's since the Modern Rock chart began in September of 1988.

"Waiting For The End" >>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yep... "Waiting for the End." LP's best song, hands down.

LimbsKing, Monday, 9 July 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

has to be the first time a band has topped the chart twice in one year with lead singles from different albums, black keys really do pump that garbage out at a fast clip

some dude, Monday, 9 July 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago) link

if I were on the ball, I wouldve made the "Archie Bell, contact your lawyers" joke in the previous thread

Rope seconded.

Bush is back?? Chili Peppers? Foo Fighters? Wow.

skip, Monday, 9 July 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

I actually recognize and like about half of these. Voted for "Rope."

(But mostly b/c I've gotten sick of "Pumped Up Kicks.")

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Monday, 9 July 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, this year has a lot of songs that crossed over to pop (Coldplay, Foster the People) or were featured in TV commercials (Black Keys, Black Keys).

LimbsKing, Monday, 9 July 2012 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

Well, Coldplay didn't so much cross over as remain over.

Rope vs. Walk: I go Walk.

Re: two #1 Black Keys songs from different albums in one calendar year.

Did a little checking... Nirvana did it in 1994 ("All Apologies" from In Utero and "About a Girl" from Unplugged) and Green Day did in 1995 ("When I Come Around" from Dookie and "JAR" from the Angus soundtrack). Little fact for the day.

LimbsKing, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 12:59 (twelve years ago) link

well i said 'lead singles' ("All Apologies" and "When I Came Around" were definitely not the first hits off those albums), but still, good trivia.

some dude, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:18 (twelve years ago) link

Even though I like BK, "really do pump that garbage out at a fast clip" is a hilarious assessment.

LimbsKing, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:27 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder if such a popular band has put less effort into their songwriting since, i dunnno, BTO or something. not that 30 Seconds To Mars are inherently better for all the effort they put into sucking but i kind of admire how much they believe in it.

some dude, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:40 (twelve years ago) link

waiting for the end by a mile!

Pumped up Kicks is probably one of the only songs most of ILX recognizes, thanks to Whiney's tireless efforts

i didn't vote in this poll but endorse anything that encourages young people to shoot one another
