I blame MTV. That's when it became all about the image, and what you look like. The music and feeling it wasn't important. It all became just another commodity for the corporate suits to package and sell, man.

There is something good from all eras. One should open ones mind to music from all ages.

I can understand that a young teen doesn't feel like checking out old stuff that his parents likes usually. But said kid should also open his mind for older stuff when he is around his late teens. The same way, one shouldn't stop searching for new music just because some new music is crap. Even if you prefer older styles, there is a lot of great new stuff out there, just a bit under the radar.

i like that old time rock n roll

what's weird is that i was just thinking today of posting an "old time rock n roll" vs "it's still rock n roll to me" thread. i mean, not about the relative merits of those two songs, but about the relative merits of the two approaches described therein to the problem of being middle-aged and not being sure you understand how modern music works -- do you just focus on the fact that certain virtues of older music are no longer honored ("old time rock and roll") or do you deny that music has actually changed in any substantial way ("it's still rock and roll to me")? of course there are other approaches but i'm not sure they're laid out in AOR hits of the 1980s so we must not speak of them.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 16 July 2012 02:02 (twelve years ago)

they say the heart of rock and roll is the beat = a highly theoretical work by Huey Lewis who speculates what it might be like were he to encounter this "beat". I see this as taking the still-rock-and-roll-to-me approach to another level (the mezzanine bro)

sad songs say so much and I guess that's why they call them the blues = really falling into neither camp, more in the line of "drift away"

"silly love songs" is the defensive approach, as was "it's only rock and roll."

although that billy joel song is pretty defensive too. I adore that bullshit about how new wave is some kind of expensive lifestyle - didn't joe jackson do one like that too? something about making a fortune on safety pins?

I remember how I used to hate that the weekend oldies show used to always include "old time rock and roll" even though it was out of the era they were playing, on the grounds that it was "our theme song" because we wanted to hear some oldies. fuck you, man.

Vic Perry, Monday, 16 July 2012 03:37 (twelve years ago)

what's weird is that i was just thinking today of posting an "old time rock n roll" vs "it's still rock n roll to me" thread.

i think of doing that about once a month, possibly also also with "it's only rock'n'roll (but i like it)" and other songs in the mix.

some dude, Monday, 16 July 2012 03:56 (twelve years ago)

didn't joe jackson do one like that too? something about making a fortune on safety pins?

That would be "I'm the Man" and I will brook no criticism of this majestic song, which is not about music, by the way. "Skateboards -- I've almost made them respectable!"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 16 July 2012 04:19 (twelve years ago)

Went and listened and "I'm the man" sounded great actually. He mentions safety pins in "beat crazy" too but basically my memory wasn't reliable. While I'm doing mea culpas I realized that "I guess that's why they call it the blues" is not a music commentary song, although "sad songs say so much" obviously is.

i finally found a keeper copy of grank funk's we're an american band album. not that i've been looking non-stop, but this is the one to beat and the best i've heard in 25 years. hot stamper! very heavy. great depth. highs/mids/lows are solid. sonically bright and bold. great detail. hard to find on those friggin' yellow vinyl pressings. sledghammer sound effect on "The Railroad" quite impressive on this copy. still some surface noise, but all in all very nice.
