The Stairs "Mexican R'n'B" -- Most criminally overlooked record?

Is this all that Allmusic.com has to share regarding this gem??

I just rediscovered this record last night, and I can't get over how well it's stood the test of time... Granted, I think the Hives' popularity has a lot to do with this record seeming relevant today. But all the obviousness of the Kinks/Stones/Beatles-ism be damned, "Mexican R'n'b" is still energetic and captivating.

OK, well I found this and a gazillion Japanese on-line music sites which still sell the Stairs' goods. So some folks out there still know what's up...

I don't have the album, but I do have 4 CD singles, and yes, they are great. "Last Time Around" is probably the loudest record I own.

"Weed Bus" and (i think) "Mary Joanna" were great fuckin' tracks, if memory serves.

Came a little too early and Gallon Drunk had better outfits. ;-)

I think we've found two AMG reviews of mine that I actually will stand by: I was baffled by this stuff when I came across it and I haven't seen any reason to get un-baffled. It didn't seem to work as parody, it didn't seem to work as pastiche, and I'm singularly mystified as to why anyone would bother. And if my mystification is what they were trying to achieve then I'm still mystified: WHY?

(The only explanation I can think of is: I don't really like listening to the stuff they're aping/pastiching/whatever, so this was Not For Me from the beginning.)

I still am illiterate as far as Kinks and Stones go..(I only got turned on to early Stones YESTERDAY, when I was going thru some old records I've been indefinitely borrowing from my mom.. and I was nodding along to "Through The Past Darkly" incessantly), but I loved that Stairs records when it first came out. Then again, I was in total XTC/Dukes of Stratosphear love then, and this record kinda went hand in hand.

But how are the Hives, for example, un-baffling but the Stairs baffling, for starters? (Asking earnestly, not smugly)

Howlin' Pelle looks like Episode V era Mark Hammill.

Stairs were pretty great recreation of pebbles-y r'n'b raunch. I saw 'em at Glastonbury 92 and they were great.

one month passes...
Sas listening to a tape of mexican r'n'b today in the car...

Singing at the top of my voice even though the quality sucks :oP

Saw em at the Duchess of York once and they were classic.

Anyone have their album in a format that isn't 10 year old worn out cassette tape? Lost the album I taped it from (and a few others, anyone remember the Primemovers or Rain?) in a house move yonks ago.. aargh!
