i have to admit, this essay appeals to me

it speaks truth to power

The online music community can be pretty divisive about genre classification, but there’s no denying that we absolutely adore our unique pockets of styles, all brimming to the tip with enough idiosyncrasies for stalwarts of each label to go mad over when the dividing lines get foggy. To anyone surfacing the depths of the musical community online, it’s positively labyrinthine. But what comes of a project seeking to birth new new vernacular into the community, intentionally instigating the use of a brand new genre when discussing about the music contained within? According to Tim of Smoke Don’t Smoke, the result is Dopewave.

It’s a threatening level of density for even the most involved individual, let alone the masses of individuals unconcerned with the subtleties between each subgenre. For most, “Dopewave” might as well mean “white dudes messing with a spate of electronic-based production in their basement;” Dopewave’s sentiment is intrinsically appealing, a focus on intertwining and splicing compelling pop and R&B rhythm into chillwave-like compositions, topped with a heightened emphasis on nuanced ambiance underneath. The mixtape provided as a starter kit to the genre gives us several clues: percussion loops often skitter across the bottom of each track, instrumental hip-hop has served as some sort of starting basis for the sounds at work here, and each track provided is probably wildly more entertaining when under the influence of hallucinogens—The warped remix of The Beach Boys by BeachBeach is reason alone to release a anti-narcotics PSA with the mixtape.
