I don't even know where to start. En Vogue or En Vogue or Mary or Bobby or Gerald & Eddie or Al.

this isn't anywhere near as loaded as 88 imo, lotta folx that have come to the end of the road (though not michael jackson - both those hits are phenomenal, i'd take them over anything on bad tbh), two icons making their first appearance and the first examples of laface and whitney and bobby's move to atlanta bearing fruit at the top of the charts, difficult to overstate the impact those moves and the industry money that followed had on the city and on r&b and hip-hop in general.

Don't forget Kriss Kross and Another Bad Creation when talking about Atlanta ruling the airwaves in the early 90s.

i think that's the last prince appearance (going forward at least) which is just sad, my least fave of his huge hits by far. not that crazy about the album it's from either tbh, least fave he made pre-name change by far for me.

Wasn't the acapella version the original version? Been a while, of course, but I seem to recall it being rerecorded with instruments for radio play (only to have everyone prefer the original anyway, of course).

I heard the single (non-a capella) version first so I think of it as the original version; I have no idea about the recording history

This was the year I was most attuned to "urban" radio, so I remember a lot of these songs very fondly.

I don't know! It's terrible and I hated the song for the longest time because of it!

yeah that shai a capella (the only one i knew also) was so huge, a real phenomenon, one of those tracks that you heard like crazy and everyone was talking about within a week of hitting radio.
