I'd heard 18 from the original poll but only eight of these and some of those only once... Main Ingredient or Super Tight I guess.

Bone Thugs feels like the aural equivalent of graffitti tags, in a great way.

some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 01:21 (thirteen years ago)

i was talking w/ jordan about this on gchat today, about how spice 1's lyrical focus on murder was such a crazily claustrophobic tunnel vision, it's completely psychotic, like every single line is about shooting someone

i know what you mean, sometimes if i haven't heard some older gangsta stuff for a long time i'm always shocked at how vicious it is....

Elrond Hubbard (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 August 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

i was thinking about it b/c of this http://respect-mag.com/to-3hunna-and-beyond-an-interview-w-lil-reese/

"While trap rap forgoes some of the socially-minded angst that marked gangsta rap in the ‘90s, to chop down and zero in on one facet of the culture would be shortsighted."

the idea that gangster rap in the 90s was so much more socially minded is such an attempt to rewrite history imo

I think most people frame "gangsta rap" in terms of Ice Cube, basically, his writing for NWA and the early solo albums....he clearly tried to connect the dots between LA gangsta culture and Black Panthers, Nation of Islam type radicalism....ditto for, say Kam or Lench Mob....but yeah I mean most of it was a really hardheaded (or nightmarish in some cases) nihilism....Eazy's philosophy as opposed to Cube's
