58 bonus tracks. Supposedly coming in August or September.
― crustaceanrebel, Friday, 27 July 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)
58 bonus tracks and nothing from the postcard 45s ;_;
― condorito breath (electricsound), Friday, 27 July 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)
The absence of the postcard singles is just ridiculous. They would get a fair few more sales if they just included those.
― Kitchen Person, Friday, 27 July 2012 03:28 (thirteen years ago)
Funny, I don't need even one remix of "Good Morning Britain".
The gem of all this is the live disc with Dreamland. It's arguably the best thing Roddy ever did.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 27 July 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)
The absence of the Postcard singles (and partially-uncompleted album and many demos) is per Roddy Frame's explicit demands. So don't blame anyone but him. We all would have liked to have seen it, and the label as well, I'm sure.
― crustaceanrebel, Friday, 27 July 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)
I can excuse the many "Good Morning Britain" versions, since it apparently did the trick and produced a hit - one of only two on the US modern rock charts, and one of only three top 30 tracks on the UK charts. But I sure don't want to hear them all.
― crustaceanrebel, Friday, 27 July 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)
amazingly, that still looks like it's skipping at least one Good Morning Britain remix, unless the Norman Cook one has been retitled
― ¥╡*ٍ*╞¥ (sic), Friday, 27 July 2012 07:31 (thirteen years ago)
The Norman Cook one is "Morning Acid mix," and it's included.
― crustaceanrebel, Friday, 27 July 2012 07:55 (thirteen years ago)
I'm sure my CD doesn't say Morning Acid (and the mix doesn't SOUND like the title) but heigh ho

And I can't really say anything bad about Roddy for not wanting the Post Card stuff back out there. I think most of who did so would think very little of the music created when we were seventeen.
― Austin, Saturday, 28 July 2012 04:50 (thirteen years ago)
I can see what you're seeing, Austin . . . but the Postcard stuff holds up pretty well, and most people realize that this was the product of a teenager and see it in that light. Not to mention that of the four Postcard tracks, two were remade (not all that differently) for the debut album, and one "Mattress Of Wire" was covered for years and years after the fact. That too, in not a dissimilar style to the original 7" version. So I have a hard time seeing the hang-up, even if it is his prerogative. Why not a limited edition CD reissue with the "Green Jacket Grey" material, early demos and so on?
― crustaceanrebel, Saturday, 28 July 2012 12:08 (thirteen years ago)
Is there reason to think that the Green Jacket Grey material exists in sufficient fidelity for wide release? I've heard amazing stuff (live and demos both) from 1980/81, but with poor sound. I'd like to think he's held onto better, but who knows.
― Michael Train, Saturday, 28 July 2012 12:35 (thirteen years ago)
I mean, the Joy Division-y stuff from the Urban Development tape comp is amazing, but (almost) impossible to hear. [Songs are "Abbatoir," "Stand Still," and "Real Tears.")
― Michael Train, Saturday, 28 July 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)
At last! I have terrible vinyl copies of their post-HLHR output. I heard "The Crying Scene" again not too long ago and it sounded good -- Squeeze with guitar raunch.

the Green Jacket Grey stuff I have sounds like it's from a multi-generation cassette transfer, but it isn't *that* bad (except for the tracks from the Urban Development tape, which seem to be played back at the wrong speed), and I can imagine the source material sounding decent, if it still exits. I wonder how the demos came to be bootlegged in the first place? there are also some live bootlegs (dating back to 1980) floating around.
― starfish succulents (unregistered), Saturday, 28 July 2012 12:45 (thirteen years ago)
*exists
I have a pretty clean copy of about 10 songs (aside from the Postcard singles), and no doubt it exists in fidelity at least a generation (but two or three likely) better, which means it probably sounds at least as good as the Postcard stuff. "Abbatoir" is one song I have with pretty great sound, but I don't know if it's the Urban Development version.
― crustaceanrebel, Saturday, 28 July 2012 12:46 (thirteen years ago)
Haven't listened to HLHR much since buying the cd, I think it sounds really tinny. So was surprised to see that the last cd was '93, thought mastering was better by then. But I think In The Garden by Eurythmics had the same problem up until the remaster about 5 years back.
Would like to get the Postcard stuff, I think. Have tended to like a lot of stuff from there & then. Not sure if I've actually heard the legendary Aztec Camera stuff though.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 28 July 2012 12:47 (thirteen years ago)
Yes, some of the live bootlegs I've heard sound better than the demos; the best-sounding one I know is the Live at Doune Castle show from 17/6/80. That was maybe the most commonly traded early show; I'm sure it's up online somewhere nowadays.
― Michael Train, Saturday, 28 July 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)
the only really early one I have is a set from the DeVilles club from Aug. 14, 1981, and that sounds alright. I tried to get the Doune Castle show from some dude on slsk, but he's almost never online and I can never get the the top of his queue :(

Listened to "Love" yesterday and, crikey, it's just so awful I gotta sell it. Let's turn a brilliant folk songwriter into an American R&B star, complete with backup singers, uber-crappy 80s production and 60s musical cliches! Ugh.
"Stray" was alright though that felt like a reaction to "Love" where he decided to get edgier and rockier, then "Dreamland" dabbled in hip-hop beats and it wasn't until the underrated "Frestonia" where he really got back to his core strengths, which are on ample display on his three solo albums (which feel like a trilogy to me).
Roddy+guitar=bliss.

anybody interested in early Aztec Camera stuff, should take a look here:

I love Dreamland. Most days it's my favorite Aztec Camera album.

Would love to get hold of the early Green Jacket Grey demo stuff that a few of you have been talking about here. Got some great AC rarities to trade such as Doune Castle 1980, Devilles 1981, Nightmoves 1982 as well as Roddy solo at Paisley Abbey 2012 and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (HLHR show)2013. If you can help email me at videohe✧✧✧@hotm✧✧✧.c✧✧. Thanks :-)

Austin, did you get it? I pre-ordered mine, which was supposed to arrive by the 4th of February, but I got an e-mail message saying it was pushed back two weeks.
― crustaceanrebel, Tuesday, 11 February 2014 04:01 (eleven years ago)
Yes, it arrived today. I got the bonus 7" too — it's missing the side B label!
― Austin, Tuesday, 11 February 2014 04:06 (eleven years ago)
Finally... Aztec Camera how he was meant to be heard.
