Ned Raggett, Friday, 3 August 2012 14:36 (twelve years ago)

"March of the Pigs."

I'm single and I can't thank you enough for the opportunity to voice my opinion in this way. Closer.

StanM, Friday, 3 August 2012 14:37 (twelve years ago)

'March of the Pigs', best thing Reznor's ever done.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 3 August 2012 14:39 (twelve years ago)

I always appreciated how Trent figured out that pent up demand each time would mean he could release anything as a first single and his audience would go insane for it lacking anything else to listen to even when more 'user-friendly' songs were lurking. "March of the Pigs," "The Day the World Went Away"...

These are all great songs but it has to be "Closer".

Always thought "Heresy" should've been a single. They always played it in the alternative/goth clubs and it was great for dancing.

how's life, Friday, 3 August 2012 15:12 (twelve years ago)

Closer. Though I'd take any of the radio hits from PHM first.

jim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago)

I'd take Down In It or Sin, but not Head Like a Hole.

how's life, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:28 (twelve years ago)

"Sin" is my motherfucking JAM

keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 3 August 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago)

Stale incense, soul sweat, and lies, lies, lies...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 9 August 2012 00:01 (twelve years ago)

I put off voting cuz couldn't decide! Voted closer but really could have voted for any of them depending on mood.

rayuela, Thursday, 9 August 2012 00:17 (twelve years ago)

Ended up voting "Hurt" because my old band used to cover it

keeping things contextual (DJP), Thursday, 9 August 2012 00:24 (twelve years ago)

It must be "Closer," but these are all awesome songs.

System, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:01 (twelve years ago)

if i didn't love "March" so much i'd have voted for the definitive version of "Hurt" to protest the supposed significance of that pompous Rick Rubin production

some dude, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:02 (twelve years ago)

Missed this, would have been one of the three other than Closer (one of my least favourite songs on TDS). Might have been Hurt because that's what I would have said 15 years ago, I guess.

toby, Friday, 10 August 2012 05:29 (twelve years ago)

Hurt is an all-time closer, no?

Ówen P., Friday, 10 August 2012 05:34 (twelve years ago)

I've never liked the final notes of "Hurt" much.

I voted for "March of the Pigs" but "Closer" is pretty all-time FUIUD.

Tim F, Friday, 10 August 2012 06:34 (twelve years ago)

"Hurt" was a great cafeteria jukebox choice c.a. grade 9

Ówen P., Friday, 10 August 2012 13:35 (twelve years ago)

cafeteria jukebox?

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:38 (twelve years ago)

man I am now even more envious of Canada

keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:39 (twelve years ago)

I would have traded the yogurt machine for a jukebox in a heartbeat

keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:40 (twelve years ago)

yogurt machine?!?

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:43 (twelve years ago)

I liked the rasta color scheme, in 12th grade.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Friday, 10 August 2012 13:44 (twelve years ago)

It was a big coup for the student council. Every morning: "Take a chance on me" and "Hurt" without fail.

Ówen P., Friday, 10 August 2012 13:49 (twelve years ago)

what's weird is that "piggy" is the only NIN song at the karaoke places i go to.

rayuela, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:51 (twelve years ago)

okay that's REALLY FUCKING weird

keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 10 August 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago)

karaoke would be so much more fun if i could populate the song lists.

rayuela, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:59 (twelve years ago)

went to the best karaoke the other night - the dude was just pulling up the original recordings online, so it was like singing along to a record in your car. then he'd google the lyrics and display them on an ipad for the singer.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 10 August 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago)

this album's singles campaign always seemed kind of weirdly restrained to me for an album of its level of success. you look at almost all the other poll: megaselling rock albums released in 1994 and they tend to have 3-5 pretty major radio hits that mostly still get played today. with this, you have one huge huge iconic song (which actually missed the modern rock top 10!), a lead single that left an impression on those who heard but didn't even chart, a minor hit w/ no video, and an atypical slow song better known now as a cover. plus in the middle of that campaign a non-album soundtrack single. obviously, doesn't hurt the album's legacy at all, but i feel like if it was better handled we might hear a song besides "Closer" on the radio today.
