where is 'I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)' ?

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago)

- I don't really listen to any of it much these days
- God there are a lot of songs here, some of which I'd completely forgotten about. What on earth is "Fashion Of His Love"? WTF does "The Queen" sound like?
- "Scheiße", "Bloody Mary" and "Government Hooker" were my initial favourites, and are probably my favourites-that-actually-sound-distinctly-like-Gaga
- By the end of last year I was quite surprised to realise that my actual most-listened-to were "Electric Chapel" and "Heavy Metal Lover", which are my favourites-that-could-be-by-anyone-really

It's probably a measure of this album's failure that the generic ones that sound like whomever are better than the ones where Gaga's ~vision~ comes trough loud and clear.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago)

xp I have never heard of that song? I didn't include the remixes on the deluxe edition because I couldn't be bothered

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago)

Hair
Scheiße
Bloody Mary

^^ still an awesome sequence imo

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago)

Songs I could vote for:

Born This Way
Government Hooker
Judas
Bloody Mary
Heavy Metal Lover
The Edge Of Glory

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, wow, I've been listening to this on Spotify the last couple of days, it doesn't have all those special-edition tracks but I totally hadn't even noticed they were gone. Whooooof.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago)

Also still think "Hair" is her worst single on any album.

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago)

where is 'I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)' ?

massive lol

Also still think "Hair" is her worst single on any album.

You can always put that comment where your heart ought to be.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago)

Thank you for not saying I can always put that comment where my hair ought to be.

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago)

I would relisten to this album but I just discovered that the entirety of Honey's Dead is FINALLY available in the US, so

keeping things contextual (DJP), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago)

oh shut up: you know you'd want to hear Gaga doing "Far Gone and Out."

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:56 (twelve years ago)

nobody better vote for americano

katherine, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago)

Think I may have accidentally erased "Electric Chapel" from iTunes.

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago)

It's not bad.

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:43 (twelve years ago)

Well, kinda qualifies as one of lex's "generic ones."

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:43 (twelve years ago)

i think at this point "scheiße" is the only song i get any real rush from

half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:52 (twelve years ago)

i hardly remember how most of the second half even sounds

half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:52 (twelve years ago)

I'm sure I've said this before but Marry the Night, Government Hooker, Bloody Mary, Scheisse, Heavy Metal Lover and Electric Chapel would have made a better EP than Fame Monster.

katherine, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago)

"government hooker" is theoretically catnip to me so i don't know why it is that i don't love it

half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 18:01 (twelve years ago)

Heavy Metal Lover over Schisse. The "I could be your girl girl girl girl girl girl, but would you love me if I ruled the world?" part is the apex of the album imo.

Really don't care about any of the rest.

prolego, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago)

Amazing number of people claiming to only like one song on this album.

Eric H., Tuesday, 7 August 2012 18:10 (twelve years ago)

i don't only like one song. i also like "bloody mary", "government hooker", "electric chapel", and "edge of glory"

half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago)

why are all the people who Care About Lady Gaga so quick to write off her first actually interesting record

thomp, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago)

because it's wildly uneven and the lows are are actively, painfully terrible

keeping things contextual (DJP), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago)

that seems like part of the fun, of gaga

thomp, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago)

Bad Kids
Scheiße
Marry The Night
Government Hooker
Americano
The Edge Of Glory
Hair
Born This Way
Yoü And I

Judas

and then I stop caring

i don't know why anyone would find this album interesting if they didn't find "Bad Romance" interesting

you and i

surm, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 00:56 (twelve years ago)

Voted for "Marry The Night." Still my favorite track (structurally, it reminds me of Bowie more than anything else). Wish this would have been the second single instead of "Judas"

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 01:32 (twelve years ago)

"Marry The Night" was supposedly going to be the lead single before she wrote "Born This Way" -- kind of suspect the reaction to the album would've been just as deflating, if not moreso, if that had happened

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 01:34 (twelve years ago)

u know, my boyfriend always gets me into marry the night when i'm drunk and then i walk away feeling like i was just forced to dance at a batmitzvah or something

torn between "highway unicorn" and "heavy metal lover"

contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 06:04 (twelve years ago)

I don't think it has shit songs (though I don't know the three bonus tracks), just too many of them. The sequence might be wrong too. By the time you get to "Highway Unicorn", you feel exhausted.
Also I think "Hair" should've been a single, with a radio edit. My other favorites are "Scheiße", "Goverment Hooker" and "Bloody Mary".

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 9 August 2012 05:15 (twelve years ago)

garibay is a terrorist

someone needs to look at that guy's history as a pop songwriter/producer and explain to me how he became the right hand man for this album

the RedOne tracks on this shit all over everything, "you & i" and "edge of glory" excepted. but even those pale in comparison to the RedOne singles off the first two records.

i mean i love "dance in the dark" but jesus

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 9 August 2012 05:22 (twelve years ago)

????

I don't really see any gap in quality between the Garibay and RedOne stuff on this album. And Garibay's history looks fairly undistinguished but not in a way that screams "run, run away"

REV LION (The Reverend), Thursday, 9 August 2012 08:15 (twelve years ago)

Straight up lunacy.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:11 (twelve years ago)

these are amazing, all-over-the-map results that exactly confirm lex's comment: "the one thing i find interesting about BTW is how everyone agrees it's patchy, a mess etc, but everyone's favourites and least favourites are completely different - absolutely no consensus WHICH the stand-out tracks are."

But I am glad to see "You and I" doing so well, especially against presumed favorite "Edge of Glory!"

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:38 (twelve years ago)

DITTO !!

surm, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:43 (twelve years ago)

altho i think the lack of votes for Edge, given how Great it is, says something about the album as a whole

surm, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:44 (twelve years ago)

Nothing against "Edge" btw - I think it's a real spirit-raiser - but I'm a sucker for a good old fashioned story song with an emotional punch to it and "You and I" really delivers.

Did we ever discuss the weird phenomenon of there being like a billion versions, each dubbing over "Nebraska" with the local radio jurisdiction?

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:45 (twelve years ago)

haha no, i never heard of that!

some dude, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:47 (twelve years ago)

Oh, yeah! And then someone told me that "Nebraska" was personal Gaga code for this particular lover/mentor figure, ie the guy in the song, making it a really insane substitution, but I never checked into that. I've heard it as "Columbus" and then on a road trip, the very awkward "Detroit," which...yeah, not enough syllables there.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:49 (twelve years ago)

yeah, the umlaut in the title is a nod to Lüc Carl, who's from Nebraska

some dude, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:59 (twelve years ago)

woah all this information

well garibay did basically the entire album... RedOne's three tracks were all high up on this poll

& none of that even accounts for RedOne's history with gaga

surm, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 02:37 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, this album has a really consistent sound and feel IMO, which is maybe why it grates a little bit - there's something relentless about it, compared to Fame Monster, which is obviously shorter by a long shot, but also, the sonic variety between even "Bad Romance," "Telephone," "Speechless" and "Teeth" is really refreshing. Maybe that makes it more a "collection of songs" than an "album" but I like collections of songs.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 02:50 (twelve years ago)

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 03:07 (twelve years ago)

i didn't know that about the different versions or the umlaut either!

the sonic variety between even "Bad Romance," "Telephone," "Speechless" and "Teeth" is really refreshing

one of the things that makes the fame monster so impressive is that it's never less than a coherent, unified package even when it's about as stylistically diverse as gaga has ever been

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 07:16 (twelve years ago)

anyway, good two winners

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 07:16 (twelve years ago)

"Heavy Metal Lover" is very Confessions-era Madonna.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago)

eight years pass...

i'm gearing up for a bit of a vinyl purge and i'm afraid this one is gonna go. if it was just a single disc of the best songs it'd be an undeniable Gaga masterpiece but the filler exhausts me. i don't even think the songs are that bad, but the production is very in-your-face and samey so it's hard to just take the album tracks as breathers in between the bangers.
