some dude, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:29 (twelve years ago)

god, the music the kids listen to these days

thomp, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:30 (twelve years ago)

favorites: Somebody That I Used To Know, What Makes You Beautiful, Springsteen

also ok with: It Will Rain, Stronger, Good Feeling

lol: all that other shit

some dude, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:34 (twelve years ago)

Gotye song is at its nadir of overplay-induced boredom right now but it is easily the best thing here. Otherwise would probably go Karmin. Some of this stuff is real crap - One Direction makes me want to throw things at the radio and most of these feel like second-string followups to other, bigger and better songs.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:35 (twelve years ago)

lol Karmin -- for a while every time "Brokenhearted" came on i thought it was a Nicki Minaj song, like even through the rap verses

some dude, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago)

Some songs that will appear on my Top singles of 2012 list: Gotye, One Direction, Eric Church. Maybe Kelly Clarkson.
Also like the Flo Rida, Calvin Harris & Train.

jetfan, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago)

I'm amenable to being convinced I should vote for Gotye, Nicki, or Flo

REV LION (The Reverend), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago)

"Good Feeling" beat/chorus works so well that it almost doesn't matter that it's a Flo Rida song. "Wild Ones" too, actually.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 00:23 (twelve years ago)

I agree about "Good Feeling", but "Wild Ones" chorus is some sub-Skylar Grey bullsh

REV LION (The Reverend), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 02:24 (twelve years ago)

"Good Feeling" beat/chorus works so well that it almost doesn't matter that it's a Flo Rida song.

it's a Flo Rida song AND an Avicii song. two red flags imo. (and an Etta James song obv & she's basically the only good thing about it afaict)

Gurdas Mane (crüt), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 02:38 (twelve years ago)

i don't really like the Avicii song, prefer the Dr. Luke beat on the Flo Rida track. obv Etta James track is better than all of the above but the way they chopped the vocal from her performance has its own appeal that isn't really there in the o.g. song.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 02:45 (twelve years ago)

Avicii stole the treatment of the sample from Pretty Lights but the Pretty Lights track is terrible and "Levels" is a classic, fuiud.

REV LION (The Reverend), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago)

wow that song leveled up like three times!!

Gurdas Mane (crüt), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 04:30 (twelve years ago)

haha

REV LION (The Reverend), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 06:28 (twelve years ago)

very very easily 'springsteen'

balls, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:58 (twelve years ago)

bump

some dude, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 23:46 (twelve years ago)

Voted "Call Me Maybe"

queequeg (peter grasswich), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 23:52 (twelve years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 00:01 (twelve years ago)

"springsteen" by far -- it has gotten me all blubbery and emotional several times this summer and it is definitely my #1 single of the year so far

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 04:59 (twelve years ago)

honorable mentions: gotye, bruno, kelly in that order

also i will take this opportunity to mention that i enjoy the havana brown song despite being unable to identify any redeeming qualities in it. in particular i enjoyed that i could not understand a single word in the chorus & for a minute i thought the singer was lady gaga (who had recently decided to stop being arty for no apparent reason)

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 05:04 (twelve years ago)

"springsteen" is pretty good huh!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 12:20 (twelve years ago)

it's totally a boy's "tim mcgraw"

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 12:24 (twelve years ago)

"Springsteen" is my favorite single of the year.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:05 (twelve years ago)

"Springsteen" is the best by a good bit. After that One Direction and Gotye, and even that Bruno Mars is not so bad, though I generally hate him.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:17 (twelve years ago)

otm, although i voted for One Direction

some dude, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:30 (twelve years ago)

i also enjoy the havana brown song in a nearly-as-good-as-that-nayer-single way because it makes me feel like my brain is emptying itself of sentient thought

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:37 (twelve years ago)

Actually voted for the Bruno Mars power ballad.

The Gotye and Karmin songs are just about at the "Sexy and I know It" level of irritation for me, by now.

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago)

17. "All the Right Places" Zach Heckendorf 3:21
18. "Free" Graffiti6 3:47
19. "Run Dat Back" Jadagrace 3:36
20. "Earthquake" Labrinth featuring Busta Rhymes 4:19

going to listen to these four because i've heard all the ones above them and have no desire to hear any of them again

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 15:54 (twelve years ago)

Zach Heckendorf: i like the shameless hooks but who the fuck is he kidding with that voice

Graffiti6: jamie liddell horseshit with a spirited arrangement that doesn't overpower the singer enough

Jadagrace: Disney homage to pop actual music

labrinth: finally some tepid club shit you can actually headbang to

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:05 (twelve years ago)

voting "good feeling" because if I was an in an "oh, fine" mood at a wedding and up for jumping around to modern dance-pop i'd prefer this to anything else offered, though I prefer "Wild Ones"

da croupier, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:08 (twelve years ago)

i can think of how only one of these goes

ticagrelor rotini (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:15 (twelve years ago)

good feeling, what makes you beautiful, sorry for party rocking, ours, somebody that i used to know, feel so close

pretty decent volume, actually

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago)

man, I just don't enjoy "Springsteen." I like the lyric "Back when I was gasoline and this old tattoo had brand new ink," though.

Gurdas Mane (crüt), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 20:26 (twelve years ago)

I'm waiting for somebody to speak up and rep for Gym Class Heroes. I know some ILXor has to like them.

Gurdas Mane (crüt), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 20:33 (twelve years ago)

I like the lyric "Back when I was gasoline and this old tattoo had brand new ink," though.

his delivery kills it

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:24 (twelve years ago)

I surprisingly don't hate "Feel So Close"

REV LION (The Reverend), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago)

springsteen

this song would be a fucking banger but the wordless chorus is a huge cop out imo -- love the verses tho

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 00:29 (twelve years ago)

I'd just like to point that seven people who voted for Karmin need to take a long, reflective look at their lives.

REV LION (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 August 2012 00:29 (twelve years ago)

whoa whoa whoa oh oh oh
whoa whoa whoa oh oh oh
whoa whoa whoa oh oh oh

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 August 2012 00:32 (twelve years ago)

that is pretty bizarre

some dude, Thursday, 16 August 2012 00:50 (twelve years ago)

that is very weird, but it is a very catchy-by-design song and i can't really blame anyone for falling for those songs regardless of who's performing it. i don't change the radio when it's on (til the rap verse at least) but i wouldn't have voted for it. 'springsteen' and 'earthquake' are both good votes, though i haven't heard the apparently new version of the latter w/busta. version w/tinie is likable:

NASCAR, surfing, raising chickens, owning land (zachlyon), Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:39 (twelve years ago)

one thing i will say for "Heartbroken" is that it's about equal to the Minaj pop tracks it apes -- the first couple weeks it started to get radio play i'd think it was a song from Roman Reloaded for a full minute or two before remembering who it really was

some dude, Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:42 (twelve years ago)

"brokenhearted" is fine until the rap which is obv unforgivable

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:48 (twelve years ago)

it sounds like she was approached with "let's make you sound like you fit in way too well on pop radio but still maintain the most annoying aspects of your youtube career"

NASCAR, surfing, raising chickens, owning land (zachlyon), Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:51 (twelve years ago)

oh my gawwww

some dude, Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:54 (twelve years ago)

wow genuinely shocked at karmin getting 7 votes

i kind of want ke$ha to come back just so they can be pushed out of the radio niche they have been occupying in her absence

teledyldonix, Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:05 (twelve years ago)

that is a weird statement

NASCAR, surfing, raising chickens, owning land (zachlyon), Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago)

whatever radio niche Karmin & Ke$ha occupy should be sent on a rocket into a black hole
