All killer, no filler - make a so-so album into a kickass EP

I've found myself making quite a few custom playlists to do this lately - trimming away duds and songs that don't fit, tweaking the running order, occasionally adding a stray b-side released at the same time. What albums are good candidates for this? Track listings too, please.

Looking at my AC post upthread, I can conclude that the best logical step for the album after Centipede Hz would be an ambient record.

David Bowie - Young Americans

Young Americans
Win
Fascination
Right
Somebody Up There Likes Me
Across The Universe
Can You Hear Me (removed, 'Right' is a better song with a similar feel)
Fame
Who Can I Be Now? (added, although it's on the Rykodisc CD straight after 'Fame' anyway)

The thread where you turn an average LP into an amazing EP by removing half the songs

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:58 (thirteen years ago)

That thread is hilarious. Needs some blink tags as well.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 11:13 (thirteen years ago)

Damn, knew it had to have been done before. Didn't think to search for 'LP'.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

Also, careful with your strikethrough tags, kids.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

not classics but...

Teenage Fanclub - A Catholic Education:

Everything Flows
Catholic Education
Too Involved
Critical Mass
Every Picture I Paint
Eternal Light
Everybody's Fool

Butthole Surfers - Piouhgd:

Revolution, Pts. 1 & 2
Hurdy Gurdy Man
Blindman / No, I'm Iron Man
Something
P.S.Y.
Barking Dogs

that only cuts about 10 minutes of throwaway garbage off piouhgd, but it turns a disappointing album of standard length into a good short one.

contenderizer, Thursday, 9 August 2012 05:53 (thirteen years ago)

i tend to do this a lot on my itunes library, and untick the songs that ruin the album for me. it tends to be the odd song rather than a whole bunch, though.

Sum 41 - 7 Series: All Killer No Filler

allmusic: Sum 41's entry in Island/Universal's 7 Series is a seven-track version of 2001's platinum disc All Killer No Filler. Six of the album's tracks have been removed, albeit somewhat randomly, leaving 20 minutes of peppy punk-pop and one great hit single, the infectious "Fat Lip."

1. Nothing on My Back
2. Fat Lip
3. Rhythms
4. Motivation
5. In Too Deep
6. Handle This
7. Pain for Pleasure

StillAdvance, Friday, 6 May 2016 11:14 (nine years ago)

While we're at it, I would chop'n'screw HTTT thusly:

2 + 2 = 5
Myxomatosis
There There
A Punch Up At A Wedding
Sit Down, Stand Up
I Will
We Suck Young Blood
Wold At The Door
Scatterbrain

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Friday, 6 May 2016 11:16 (nine years ago)

Actually in my Bends I'm going to swap the order of Nice Dream and Just.

I prefer Talk Show Host to a couple of the tracks I've included as well, but isn't that cheating?

By the way, how could you not have Wolf as the final track?

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Friday, 6 May 2016 11:20 (nine years ago)

yeah I swapped em round at last minute. I think I was wrong. I would greatly prefer HTTT if they'd had Sit Down, Stand Up as the lead in track on side 2 instead of coming straight after 2 + 2 = 5. I like a good buildy track, but it has to lead into SOMETHING, or be earned somehow and the double climax that opens HTTT always frustrated me.

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Friday, 6 May 2016 11:26 (nine years ago)

I agree it's probably the weakest bit of sequencing they've done.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Friday, 6 May 2016 11:29 (nine years ago)

but with two of their best songs, weird

And the cry rang out all o'er the town / Good Heavens! Tay is down (imago), Friday, 6 May 2016 11:30 (nine years ago)

Cutting "Fake Plastic Trees", "Street Spirit", "High and Dry" in favor of "(Nice Dream)" just screams challops. Not that it's a bad song or anything—there are no bad songs on this album—but it's never done much for me, apart from the guitar solo (and even that's probably just a pavlovian response: 'Oh right, the next two songs are real rippers!')

bernard snowy, Friday, 6 May 2016 11:45 (nine years ago)

here's Working For A Nuclear Free City's Businessmen And Ghosts, btw, without any of the stuff copied over from the debut album and then reduced into the England EP

Soft Touch
Heaven Kissing Hill
England
All American Taste
Je Suis Le Vent
Nancy Adam Susan
Asleep At The Wheel

^^^a proper 10/10, this

Cutting "Fake Plastic Trees", "Street Spirit", "High and Dry" in favor of "(Nice Dream)" just screams challops.

Possibly a challop, but a genuinely held one.

Have we polled the album before? I'd be curious to know whether there is a large contingent of ppl who share this opinion...

I can see saying it's the most *complete*, 'perfect', balanced song on the LP, structurally -- fwiw it's the only one I can imagine listening to several times in a row on repeat
