TMFTML (TMFTML), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Pavement - "Mark E. Smith"
I also think The Fall did a tribute to Captain Beefheart.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't Roberta Flack write "Killing Me Softly" after seeing Don McLean live?

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"David Bowie" - Phish
"Listening to the Higsons" -Robyn Hitchcock

"let us not forget that a good cover version is a great tribute too."

I don't think that is always true. Many people cover songs for fun, and not as a tribute. I'm not sure about these, but some examples may be:

many Resident covers
Devo "Satisfaction"
Flaming Lips "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Young Marble Giants: "Ode to Booker T"
Johnny Cash: "The Night Hank Williams Came to Town"
NRBQ: "Boozoo, That's Who"

Jill Sobule - Billy's Thing "…song about jazz musician Billy Tipton, a woman (born Dorothy Tipton in 1914) who lived most of her adult life as a man. Remarkably, Billy successfully hid his true sex from everyone, his several wives and adopted children included, for nearly fifty years, until his death at age 74."

Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey (+ Lloyd Cole) - So Jill

Urusei Yatsura have some song that's a tribute to Pavement, the title of which escapes me, on the b-side of one of their singles. Bright Eyes have a song about Jandek.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The Replacements' "Alex Chilton", dammit.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Heavy Vegetable's "Song For Wesley".

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and every other song Wesley Willis ever wrote.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

the commodores song about marvin and jackie

the clean have a song 'david bowie' too

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Bright Eyes have a song about Jandek.

Which makes sense seeing as it's from a Jandek tribute album. ;-) Actually one of the better tracks on there, seeing as it doesn't try to cover his sound or style per se.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The entirety of Ken Vandermark's "career." Ugh.

hstencil, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben Lee's first single was about Evan Dildo.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ben Lee" by Klinger

He wishes he was just like him.
He's lucky, genetecially thin.
He wakes up next to movie stars.
And they get with him, but that's not everything.
Punk rockers go to see him play.
Chicago, New York, Glebe, LA.
Offending mainstream TV stars.
And they laugh with him, she shares a bath with him.

And you're lucky that you met me.
Because I'm arrogant like Ben Lee (Wah-ah-oh).
And some people they don't get me.
Because I'm a genius like Ben Lee.
Evidentally (Wah-ah-oh)

He's featured in glossy magazines.
The envy of guitar toting teens.
Admitted to exclusive bars.
And they let him in, 'cos he gets everything
Coke champagne, aeroplances and cars.
He wakes up next to movie stars.
He's friendly with famous people's kids.
And they get with him, 'cos they get everything.

And you're lucky that you met me (met me).
Because I'm arrogant like Ben Lee (Wah-ah-oh).
And some people they don't get me (get me).
Because I'm a genius like Ben Lee.
Evidently
Break It Down

"For the Singer of REM" - fIREHOSE

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"Blue Notes For Mongezi" recorded by the then surviving Blue Notes - Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, Johnny Dyani and Louis Moholo in December 1975. They went straight from Feza's funeral to the recording studio and blew and sang their hearts out for 2 1/2 hours. The session was edited down to a 90-minute double album, released on Ogun in early '77 and sadly out of print at the moment. It is one of the most gut-wrenching musical expressions of grief ever recorded.

The FLC song was called "Love Unlimited". And it was the nadir of their career. Which is quite impressive, really.

"When Smokey Sings" by ABC, and Spandau Ballet had that line about "Listening to Marvin," in "True."

Speaking of which, Eazy-E from NWA's "Eightball": "Put in the old tape/Marvin Gaye's Greatest Hits/turned the shit up had the bass col' rompin'/cruisin' through the Eastside south of Compton."

Spandau Ballet and NWA united at last!

John McLaughlin is the featured performer on "John McLaughlin"! Isn't that a little different?

True, but it's on Miles' album, Miles got the songwriting credit, and Miles (presumably) got to name the track. It's definitely some sort of tribute.
