don't know if we've had a thread on this before, but conversation sparked up on ILE, seemed to need its own thread: hipster interns controlling the media that reaches your eyes and ears

in high school a friend put Television's Marquee Moon and A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory on the same tape for me, which is not a very logical match but those are 2 of my favorite albums of all time so the tape has special meaning for me

Pollopolicía (some dude), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

A: REM, Reckoning
B: Replacements, Hootenanny + Stink

Pretenders + Pretenders II (half of "Mystery Achievement" cut off)

Romney's Kitchen Nightmares (WmC), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

High school:

Nebraska and Tonight's The Night

Suzanne Vega s/t and Til Tuesday - Welcome Home

Earth, Wind & Fire & Alabama (Eazy), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

i mentioned in the other thread that i had sonic youth's daydream nation on one side of a tape with savage republic's jamahiriya on the other. i was wrong though! thinking about it, i remembered that it was a 60-minute tape and i actually alternated selected songs one after the other. like "teenage riot", "so it is written", "silver rocket", "viva la rock & roll", and so on. weird. think i did it to make myself listen to the savage republic more.

that's why I always used C-120s

i'd heard vague rumors (how?) that the tape on these was too thin and would break, so i stuck to 90s and later a few 100s

mookieproof, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't do that intentionally though. I was like 12.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

the one i played the most :

A) Major Malfu(n)ction - Keith Leblanc
B) It's Tackhead Tape Time - Tackhead

another fave :

A) Microphonies - Cabaret Voltaire
B) Crackdown - Cabaret Voltaire

xpost : yeah, i never got 120's as they were indeed prone to tangled chaos ..

As you can see, i wasn't too into mixing up genres across sides ..

so far both of the tapes i've posted were made for me by other people and i'm really struggling to remember if i made any tapes like this myself. i think i was so obsessive about making tapes almost as soon as i started that i very quickly started making multi-artist compilations or best-ofs of single artists from different releases.

Pollopolicía (some dude), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

a. live skull - bringing home the bait
b. throbbing gristle - greatest hits

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

I still own more of these than I expected. this was the primary way I discovered/consumed music for most of 1994. there was a tape w/ something like Shed Seven on one side and Terrorvision on the other but bumps on the road and all

the last 'significant' one I think I made had Slint's Spiderland on one side and Ass Cobra by Turbonegro on the other - for the first few weeks of being in halls at university there was this dude opposite who was kind of intense in a not-good way and also the first guy ever to hit on me, anyway his older brother visited one day and lent a bunch of stuff for me to copy. both of these were p revelatory age 18 tbh

I got into some of my favorite groups by borrowing tapes from my friends, and loving what was on the other side. I don't actually remember which sides were A or B, but the side B groups were the ones I got into.

A: Soup Dragons - Lovegod
B: Pixies - Doolittle (this side of the tape was unmarked, my friend didn't know who it was, and I was obsessed for weeks with figuring out who this band was until I finally did)

A: Death Angel - Frolic Through the Park
B: D.R.I. - Dealing With It

A: Dead Milkmen - Big Lizard in My Backyard
B: Angry Samoans - Back From Samoa

so far both of the tapes i've posted were made for me by other people and i'm really struggling to remember if i made any tapes like this myself.

I never made tapes of albums that I already owned on CD. (That might've been a good idea if I'd had a car that could only play cassettes, but the car I drove in high school and college didn't even have that.) Basically, the only albums that made it onto these tapes were ones that I borrowed from friends or from the library.

doglatting (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

A) violent femmes - hallowed ground
B) king crimson - three of a perfect pair

this was lent to me by a friend of a friend, his taste in music having impressed several people i knew. he and his brother had a fanzine! when i returned the tape a week or so later, he asked me what i thought. i told him i didn't get it at first, but wound up liking the weird noisy stuff on the first side. didn't like the country music though. he looked at me as though i were a rind.

within a few months, these would be two of my very favorite albums.
