Macca = opening. Lennon = closing. according to the actual ceremonies that is.

piscesx, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

well the thing is i think Imagine and Hey Jude are both pretty Closing Ceremony bits of pop, though Imagine definitely wants to be Opening Ceremony

thomp, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

whereas i think A Day In The Life is more Opening Ceremony

thomp, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

"Welcome to the Opening Ceremony"

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 23:15 (thirteen years ago)

OC had some acts that are very CC, like Sande (though she's literally CC too)

stet, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)

I approve of the basic notion that the 90s should be forgotten entirely.

Oblique Strategies, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 03:28 (thirteen years ago)

are Throbbing Gristle OC or CC cos i suspect this is cobblers

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 05:44 (thirteen years ago)

anyway, two sides of the same mouldering corpse etc

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 05:45 (thirteen years ago)

TG = not pop obv.

Tim, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:37 (thirteen years ago)

TG are OC; industrial section / Fuck Buttons.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:38 (thirteen years ago)

xpost

And in so far as they are "pop culture", which is debatable since they are and always were so obviously Tate-bait (no bad thing, you understand), they are OC.

Tim, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:40 (thirteen years ago)

there was quite a lot of shit in the OC, it was just that most of the music came in 30-sec snippets so it was quickly over whereas in the CC you had brian may widdling on for about a decade and george michael unaccountably allowed to perform 9484338 songs and that awful closing who song lasting forever

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:40 (thirteen years ago)

one thing i never expected to learn from this whole thing: mr bean >>>>>>> eric idle

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:44 (thirteen years ago)

It was three Who songs Lex. They're not prog enough to have one that sounds like that.

Get wolves (DL), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:52 (thirteen years ago)

george michael unaccountably allowed to perform 9484338 songs

Or "two" as this number is known in decimal form.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 09:33 (thirteen years ago)

I'm overjoyed that we finally have two handy terms to describe whether we like something or not.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 09:38 (thirteen years ago)

Or to put it the other way the opening ceremony was a masterpiece of framing so that even the bits you otherwise didn't like worked within a wider narrative context, whereas the closing ceremony was just a mess.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 09:40 (thirteen years ago)

Was talking about why Boyle's was so much better and the obvious conclusion is that he's not a massive wanker he's a story teller and thus can weave things together in a coherant way, whereas Gavin is a bellend with no cultyural awareness who just likes big bangs works purely on spectacle with no context.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:05 (thirteen years ago)

OC is the new OTM

StanM, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:07 (thirteen years ago)

CC is the new OTT.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:10 (thirteen years ago)

Hamildan OC

StanM, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:25 (thirteen years ago)

CC = Any artist who's ever appeared on a TV-advertised compilation CD called something like 'Girls' Night In' or 'Best of Songs' or 'What Dads Listen To'

OC = All other recorded music

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:49 (thirteen years ago)

There's OC, there's CC, and there's "West End Girls".

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)

West End Girls is the only track that is both OC & CC.

It's the Schrodinger's cat of Olympics ceremony music classification.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

I think "Baba O'Riley" was used in both, as well.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

Park Life also?

OC actually felt more selective and elitist in some ways. But OC was more about songs whereas CC was more about the performers. Big point in the former's favour there imo.

nashwan, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

One ceremony pointed out that we invented the internet, the other pointed out that we like jellied eels and talking like wankers. 'Parklife' is 100% Closing Ceremony.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

OC was Song 2, CC was Parklife (I think).

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

OC: Heroes. CC: Fashion. The classification holds...

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

OC is Mike Oldfield?

Manfred Mann meets Man Parrish (ithappens), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

A compilation CD of the songs from the CC has been released.
All of you please feign surprise.

no-one seemed to hear him so he leafed through a magazine (snoball), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 17:21 (thirteen years ago)
