sublime > 311

Mordy, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

I only know a couple 311 songs like "Down" but that one does not sound like Sublime to me.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

Amber is the color of your energy vs. I don't practice Santeria

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

i guess they're dudes who loved dub enough to incorporate it into their two very different musical strains? i mean, 311 sort of anticipated nu-metal, whereas sublime anticipated... sublime cover bands

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

like it or not sublime does kinda connect back to a certain type of post-sst surfer punk cali bro diaspora

311 are choads from omaha

311 are so serious

311 = 3 x 11 = 3 x the 11th letter of the alphabet = 3 x K = KKK = Klu Klux Klan

I disagree on the grounds that the following Neil Hamburger joke would not work with Sublime:

Q: What's worse than 9/11?
A: Sublime!

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

I like Sublime more than Radiohead, Animal Collective, and Kanye West. I don't know enough about 311.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

sublime are more drunk and they have good covers. 311 is like a jam-band and they do that horrible cover of "lovesong"

oh fuck that's them???

^^STFU ABOUT LOU DOG

Jandek at the Disco (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

louie dog, toby dog, and matt dog, iirc

how's life, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

somehow i'd forgetten that they did camper van beethoven covers.

how's life, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

so are the decemberists and 311 the same band too?

da croupier, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

The Decemberists and Fleet Foxes are the same band for all practical intents and purposes

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

Still like that Sublime album pretty well. 311 is no good for anything except barfights with Scott Stapp, which is tbh a major service to humanity.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

But I understand the association. Has anyone ever made a definitive list of bro bands?

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

There's really a lot to parse here:

Chill. light on my sight as my ego becomes
A funky child with some words on my tongue
Be like intake of breath and my mouth gets loose
While i scatter my spit i dream of juice
Have you ever made out in dark hallways
Displayed a kiss that made your day or say
Play a track from your record collection
It's your mix, congratulations

We've changed a lot and then some some
Know that we have always been down down
And if i ever didn't thank you you
Then just let me do it now

I bet you light up when we start the show follow me now
Very closely because i told you so you know
We glow because we throw sun rays
We be freaky and we wanna stay

CHORUS

Lightning strikes yo we be in that violent force of light
Guaranteed to turn it out as bad as dolemite
'Cuz we're dope kidchange like a chameleon
And the channel whenever that wack show real world is on
You know we dazzle likeghetto box boomin' battles
Rattle inside your head feel redeemed like cola bottles
Fall in love with you teachers on the wax
We are self made check the technique 311 in LA

CHORUS

Keep my feet on the ground
Keep my head in the clouds
Electrified by the sound
Comes from the down
And

look at this quarterstaff (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

you lost me at "chill"

Newgod joins this board, and quickly he's some dude (goole), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

311 were real dazzlers.

how's life, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 09:54 (thirteen years ago)

God, say what you want about Sublime, but at least they could have a coherent thought.

how's life, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 11:18 (thirteen years ago)

That coherent thought may have been about a Mexican abusing a woman, but still

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 11:24 (thirteen years ago)

I think the incoherence of "down" is kind of radical for a pop song

look at this quarterstaff (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

I had forgotten how Urban Dance Squadish this song was, all I really remember of 311 is that awful "Lovesong" cover

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

Surprise, surprise ! ! so you rub your eyes
Never knew uds, so cool as ice?
Hear the vibes man, they'll stupify
Ducks - categorise us as hardcriers
That's a lie, we know why we're occupiers
No blurs, but obscure styles, these are higher
Profiles are low - as soon as we go
As a breeze straight from a deeper shade of soul

how's life, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

Ducks - categorise us as hardcriers

btw this is the greatest line to ever appear in a song, ever

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

man, this guy can BARELY rap at all, for real the bar was so low for raprock

look at this quarterstaff (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

I love the breakdown/instrumental bridge in Down though, dead serious about that. I want a loop of that to play when I walk down the streets of Queens.

look at this quarterstaff (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

so did you just wake up yesterday and go "we haven't had a Sublime thread in 3 months, something must be done"?

some dude, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

haha that would be a better story

someone (meaning Alfred) reposted an NRO comment that made passing reference to 311 and I said "ugh now I have 'Santeria' in my head"; that led to this thread

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

DJP, on one of their follow-up albums, they had a song called Duck Ska. The chorus was "have/you seen/the ducks/with Mother Goose behind?"

how's life, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

I saw UDS open for Living Colour in 1991 (with jjjusten, in fact!); they were terrible in exactly the right way and tbh I still have a ton of fondness for them

dude I am playing "Timeless" right now, once that finishes in 9 minutes I have "Deeper Shade of Soul" and "Duck Ska"* all queued up and ready to go

* "Dick Ska" = all-time typo

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

Did you mean dick sky

no Spotify, I did not mean "dick sky"

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:37 (thirteen years ago)

man it is maybe a little embarrassing how happy Urban Dance Squad makes me

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

"urban dance squad" are like a band out of a dick wolf tv show, except real

Saw same tour, totally agree. Iirc Rude Boy had one of those mobile-microphone jetpack things on, looked like a spaceman. (Did they not have wireless mics then, or did he just like the jetpack?)

In defense of UDS' lyrics, dude barely spoke English. (Which may be true of 311, too, I suppose.)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

I think he just liked the jetpack.

That tour was awesome. And I liked that since UDS didn't have a full hour of material they played "Radar Love" and "Twilight Zone" by compatriots Golden Earring to fill out their set.

three months pass...

Just realized that 40 oz. to Freedom turned 20 years old this year, making it older now than the Harder They Come Soundtrack was when 40 oz. to Freedom came out.

brimstead, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 02:09 (four years ago)

At the mention of Urban Dance Squad upthread I started to hear what I thought was their music in my head until I realized it was just a slightly rappier version of Walking on the Sun that I had invented.

ok now I'm listening to Deeper Shade of Soul and my memory wasn't that far off

311 are kinda studio gangsters compared to Sublime

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 02:39 (four years ago)

yeah it’s like 311 have huge guitar store silk shirt vibes, sublime has liquor store no shirt vibes

311 > Sublime imo

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 02:46 (four years ago)

Nick Hexum too chicken to die for his music

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 02:48 (four years ago)

i dated someone once who had an unfortunate 311 phase in their teens. apparently a staple in every 311 concert is a drum solo. THE SAME DRUM SOLO. NO VARIATION. EVERY SHOW.

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 02:52 (four years ago)

Hexum's recent album with George Clanton is very good

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 02:52 (four years ago)

a STEEL drum solo? by someone they paid to play it that isn't in the band?

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 02:57 (four years ago)

Honestly 40 Oz to Freedom and Grassroots are both good albums

zacata, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 14:16 (four years ago)

I should say that Grassroots is a good album, 40 Oz to Freedom is actually basically a classic.
