album feels low-key and introspective like VU or something with similarly awesome songs qua songs. a lot of times this is my favorite parliament/funkadelic album. backloaded imo

Title track!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago)

Title track is still the easy highlight, but some definite buried gems on this one. "No Compute," which would be even better if the vocal were more than barely audible, "March to the Witch's Castle," and "Nappy Dugout" are all choice. Standing on the Verge is definitely a more consistent record, but this one's weirder, generally a plus in the P-Funk universe.

mobs of burly teen christgaus (thewufs), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago)

title track is pretty unfuckwithable but I honestly prefer some of the more low-key thumpers here, especially "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure" and "Can't Stand the Strain"

chicago rap twitter luminary (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago)

Another vote for the title track. Lots of great songs here.

fit and working again, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago)

yeah Can't Stand the Strain is really good.

fit and working again, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago)

yeah they could still knock out some great ballads, something which diminished over time (I attribute that primarily to the loss of the original Parliaments, tbh)

chicago rap twitter luminary (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago)

I saw some Amp Fiddler-fronted band open a set with "March to the Witches Castle" once. that shit was crazy

chicago rap twitter luminary (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:52 (twelve years ago)

xp - See I think the opposite is true - their ballads tyically sound arch to me before Bootsy comes into the picture - dude knew how to tweak the slow-song formula without mocking it, a balance Clinton had trouble achieving on his own.

Like, do you really rate "This Broken Heart" with "Into You" or "Wizard of Finance"?

mobs of burly teen christgaus (thewufs), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago)

Is it just me or is "you can't miss what you can't measure" the exact same song as "do that stuff"?
Still classic.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:01 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, P-Funk reused riffs and lyrics all the time, though usually in new combinations. This is even more true of their concerts, which is no doubt where a lot of those riffs emerged to begin with.

It's either "Slop" or ".....Measure"

Like, do you really rate "This Broken Heart" with "Into You" or "Wizard of Finance"?

not particularly - "This Broken Heart" is probably the weakest track here. I dunno if I'd even call "Into You" a ballad. "Wizard of Finance" is great, possibly their best ballad ever.

chicago rap twitter luminary (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago)

i'm voting for "this broken heart"!

you lost me at "chill" (Matt P), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:24 (twelve years ago)

the vox and strings are wonderful imo

the live version of Cosmic Slop with the 'space people' intro is superior to this album version.

haha okay yr gonna have to explain the oasis thing to me

could practically make a separate poll for best version of the title track imho

the live version of Cosmic Slop with the 'space people' intro

Love this version.

Ermahgerd Thomas (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:51 (twelve years ago)

eh that's stretching it. just because both have 8-bar chord progressions and a swing beat doesn't mean they're the same song. for one thing, the Oasis song has a bridge, chorus and an intro. No Compute is just a straight 8-bar blues that never varies. what's more, the central 4-chord progression in She's Electric's verse is not in No Compute.

xp

yeah Can't Stand the Strain is really good.

― fit and working again, Wednesday, September 5, 2012 11:50 AM (1 hour ago)

fuck yeah. tricky song cuz it only really "gets there" @ 2:34 with that awesome fucking organ glissando followed by shider's (?) scream. the last 50 seconds are my favorite moment on the album, so euphoric and funky, a minute sly stone would have killed for.

and speaking of repurposing, it's basically a version of this:

it's basically a version of this

wtf never heard that version of "Whatever Makes My Baby Feel Good" before!

chicago rap twitter luminary (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i hadn't heard it until recently. gifts of the internet.

Lots of good stuff but I'm just going to go obvious and vote for the title track.

title track. Don't like this album as much as what came before or after.

Bought this at the same time I bought Standing On The Verge. Went back to Standing often, rarely revisited this. I probably should.

Yes, yes and yes. "Into You" is too long though.

Named locally as Tom D (Tom D.), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago)

I missed this poll too! But would've voted for the eventual winner anyways...

Always suspected that "This Broken Heart" is a leftover Parliament track from 1970 or so. It sounds kinda dated (not in a bad way) with the Leslie guitar and strings and "sincere" spoken word bits.

Faster than food (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 18:17 (twelve years ago)

I missed this poll too...not one of my fave Funkadelic albums but prolly would of gone with 'Cosmic Slop'...will have to dig out and give it another listen...
