i didn't realize this song was bigger in Australia than anywhere else, maybe has to do with Sia writing it?

"I'm going to smack you until you understand" = "When you start understanding, I will stop smacking you"

Your examples require a person to understand what "when" and "after" mean, which is unlikely if the person doesn't understand what "until" means. Happens all the time, believe it or not.

I finally heard this song and it is awful. The sensation of hearing it was not unlike biting into a mealy apple. Blecch.

my new least favorite part is how he rhymes "feel" with "rell" as in "keep it rell". THEY DON'T RHYME WHEN YOU SAY IT LIKE THAT

the high notes are my least favorite part so far, but i'm sure with repeated exposure i'll find new things to dislike

eh this song's fine, it's fun

you get used to, or more precisely derive a sort of perverse braced enjoyment from, those strained chorus notes, like a nauseating dip on a rollercoaster you keep going back on

i couldnt really say if this is how the rest of the general population approach the matter however

the chorus drops seem so perfunctory to begin with that sometimes i wonder to what extent you can get away with having dance-pop styling as dressage on a straight r&b song

but then there's the great worth-waiting-for "for every heart that beats" bit that winds it right up for belated exultant release

agree about the chorus strain. "for every heart that beats" is prob my least favorite part of the song, though.

i listened to all of 7 or so dancey Ne-Yo songs recently and was like yeah, this and "Closer" and "Give Me Everything" are definitely good enough to justify the bad ones

he's at least way better at them than Usher

"closer" is a song it is impossible for me not to sing along with aloud even if it's playing, in, like a restaurant. which can be embarrassing.
