BBC Radio 2 will air a new show this month which promises to bring together the storytelling musical style of Glee with hits from the beginning of the Britpop era.

Shout To The Top is the brainchild of Radio 2 and 6Music playlist boss Jeff Smith, and has been written by ex-Farm drummer Roy Boulter and former Sleeper singer Louise Wener.

Smith describes the drama as a grittier "Glee for an older audience”. Its cast is led by an all-female band played by Hannah Arterton, Fiona Macrae and Samantha Robinson. EastEnders actor Shane Ritchie will also star.

somebody needs to write a thorough interrogation of exactly why a bunch of second rate indie pub rockers discovered that Britain existed in the mid 1990s, and why this discovery fascinated them so

If I had written this serial, based on The Deep Field (which was written based on the same principle - what if there were a female Britpop era band who managed to capture the same success and longevity as the male bands?) then this would be fucking awesome. In principle, I love this idea and I would love to see it well executed. (Maybe, indeed, it already has, and that was called Josie And The Pussycats.)

Louise Wener isn't bad as a novelist, believe it or not (I didn't agree aesthetically with large chunks of her memoir, but thought it was something that really needed to be said, about that period of music history) but just everything about the rest of the execution of this points to the idea that it's going to be completely badly handled.

I'm just annoyed because this is something that, if handled well, would be amazing, and completely WCC-bait, but I just doubt it will be done well at all.

I rewatched "Slade in Flame" a couple of days ago, it's a great film but it is 1969 Britain.
