Wiki: Rubberneck is the most successful album by the grunge band Toadies. It was released in August 1994 on Interscope Records and attained RIAA gold and platinum status in December 1995 and December 1996 respectively. The album produced the band's most popular single, "Possum Kingdom".

Me: I listened to the hell out of this record in 1994/95/96 when I was a pizza delivery guy. They were kind of like the frat bro version of the Pixies, but maybe I'm the only person who hears that. (Am I? I mean "Tyler" is an obvious rip of "Where Is My Mind".)

These guys are still total gods in Dallas. Thousands of people show up whenever they want to play a gig. They have their own festival! I won free tickets to a show they headlined about a month after I moved here and my wife and I left by the fourth song. Dull and samey.

I'd have to listen again but I remember "Tyler" being vaguely Pixiesque.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

Saw these guys play with the Meat Puppets in Phoenix. They put on a good show. I didn't listen to them from the time of that show in 95/96 until about a month ago when Tyler and Possum Kingdom were placed onto my Best of the 90's Spotify list. I voted for Tyler.

beard papa, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Mister Love is kind of a face melter.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

ARE YOU GONNA SAVE ME?

cwkiii, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

But yeah, "Mister Love" just barely over "Backslider".

cwkiii, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 00:25 (thirteen years ago)

But someone should throw a vote to NO NO NO MORE SONOFABITCH

cwkiii, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 00:26 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, had no idea this went platinum. What a different time the '90s were. Decent album, though, and I remember them being fun live.

I might need to relisten, as I'm tempted to go with "Possum Kingdom" on reflex.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 14 September 2012 05:59 (thirteen years ago)

listening to this right now and shit i could vote for any of this. maybe backslider?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 14 September 2012 06:05 (thirteen years ago)

It's really between Mister Love and Tyler for me, but I love them for completely different reasons and it's hard to say which I love more.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 September 2012 06:06 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, had no idea this went platinum.

"Possum Kingdom" has been pretty consistently radio-huge.

billstevejim, Friday, 14 September 2012 07:05 (thirteen years ago)

Over the years I've been surprised to meet a lot of people who love the album tracks and minor-hits on this... I think it's more popular than it gets credit for.

billstevejim, Friday, 14 September 2012 07:07 (thirteen years ago)

It included six singles, "Possum Kingdom" (their most successful) as well as "Mister Love", "Away", "Tyler", "Backslider" and "I Come From the Water".

wtf SIX!!

ah missed this thread. good album, haven't listened to it in a while though

some dude, Saturday, 15 September 2012 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

btw i guess these peeps have 3 more albums after hell below, not counting live stuff? who knew?

i think one of these is the late-90s album that was shelved until like 10 years later. and one of them came out within the past 2 weeks or so.

billstevejim, Thursday, 20 September 2012 05:48 (thirteen years ago)

man I loved this album, I really liked the next one too, and there was a great live album from Boston called Live from the Paradise--the singer had laryngitis, but that only enhanced the raw feel...

truth be told, Tyler & Possum Kingdom are my #1 & #2, and there are probably six other songs on here that I couldve conceivably voted for, but I was toying with a vote for Backslider, and that is probably the worthiest of the goose-eggs here.

^loves belaboured seething (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 20 September 2012 05:55 (thirteen years ago)

backslider is fucking fantastic

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 20 September 2012 06:29 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I pretty much immediately regretted not voting for "Backslider" as soon as I submitted my vote.

one year passes...

A documentary was made for its 20th Anniversary:

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

cool!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 16:43 (eleven years ago)

They played this and had a Q&A with band and filmmaker Monday night, but I was too ill to go.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 16:48 (eleven years ago)

six years pass...

I remember liking "Away" a lot as a later single. my station played it a lot, the "la da da da da da da" part was cool.

they were good at finding a simple idea and just going with it. plus vocalist having a kind of hair metal affectation on his high notes was kind of cool. i also liked the song they did on the Crow 2 soundtrack, "Paper Dress", (one of the riffs which was used on a regular MTV lead-in).

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 22:19 (five years ago)

That bass riff in "Away" is an album highlight.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 22:24 (five years ago)

ten months pass...

the frat bro version of the Pixies

is this accurate?

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Sunday, 11 July 2021 03:35 (four years ago)

Perhaps not the band members, but the eventual audience for sure.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 11 July 2021 03:56 (four years ago)

Backslider is kind of meathead Fugazi.

I could do with never hearing this album again (the only Fort Worth rock band to go platinum?) but the Backslider riff is fun as hell.
