I just heard them this week for the first time. Sounds fantastic to me so far. What can you say?

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

too zany for me although their LP is a huge picture disc.

i prefer more toned down acts like le tigre, quintron or gene defcon

also: the us release is on asian man records. hahahhahahah. skounds skool!

ddd, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I love them. I was hesitant to buy the album due to the fact that it was released on Asian Man, but I'm glad I got over my crappy punk label bias. Please keep in mind that I also love
  1. Devo
  2. Shouty music
If you love those things, you should check them out. If you don't love those things, stay very far away.

Miranda, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I got an interesting concept from reading one of their interview; the
small guitar concept, where the guitar got a crafty designer-like quality and get in the back with the rythm section.
They were musing on the "small guitars" of Plastics and other old school new wave acts, liked it but decided to give it the macho tratment and bring it back to the front... with mix results IMO.
I heard them in 2000 and I rarely listen to my home-made "best of polysics" anymore. To me Spoozys are better at this test of time thing.

The Hegemon, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I've just watched this band, I feel all confused and brain damaged and shit, it seemed to go on for hours and made no sense, the keyboard player was just like stabbing her hands into the keys rather than have anything sequenced, it took ten minutes of staring at her transfixed before anybody realised nobody could actually hear anything she was playing, a further five to note she wasn't actually making any particular effort to play any actual chords, the singer is terrifying, IT ONLY COST THREE POUNDS

Michael Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to see them for free on Thurs!*
Really lookikng forward to it.

*but only cos a band on the label I work for is supporting them...

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 12 September 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

If I like Melt Banana will I like them?

They are crazed and dangerous. But I like them. DOMO ARIGATO MR ROBOTO

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Saturday, 19 February 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Also, they're on Sur La Plage in the UK, like Plus-Tech Squeeze Box and Fab Cushion, so that makes 'em alright too.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Saturday, 19 February 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

I bought a compilation called "Hey! Bob! My Friend!" a couple of years ago. Hearing one song by them is quite funny, but they don't really do anything interesting with their music at all, so it quickly becomes very drab and boring. Huge disappointment.

Øystein (Øystein), Saturday, 19 February 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Their music has interesting foundations that aren't developed enough, I think.

I'm only five years late here, but I'm currently loving Neu here right now... all the above decriptions are pretty much spot-on.

"S.V.O." sounds like a direct cover of XTC's "Crosswires"...barely.

They're touring. I saw their picture and read this thread.

Should I go???

At least five times as good as the A-Frames:

no no not at all, but polysics do have some good videos

Their "Mr. Roboto" video is in the running to be THE BEST GODDAMN THING EVER IN THE HISTORY OF NOUNS.

(Have no clue why A-Frames were brought in as a comparison point, but whatever.. Polysics rule.)

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Saturday, 19 August 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

I meant to elaborate on how her drumming the keyboard moves reminds me of that one Cradle Of Filth video where the keyboardists uses mallets on the keys in a militaristic way.. or the Laibach "Gerburt Einer Nation" video type drumming... except this is the kandy korn kid space fluff version of it.

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Saturday, 19 August 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

no clue why A-Frames were brought in as a comparison point, but whatever..

A lot of aesthetic commonality and IMO one band goes quite a bit further in what they do.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 19 August 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Mr. Roboto: smokes, punches out small children, has a "shield" like the underside of a huge PC processor chip. Brilliant!

bad hair day house (fandango), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

Tim, you're a truly insane mofo, you know that, right?

I can't wait for your "Buggles are five times better than Section 25" essay

http://www.polysics.com/en/images/disc/A-006.jpg

Telephonething (Telephonething), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah dude - no commonality whatsoever. I mean obviously Polysics are a big band w/ a big budget and they do some things (maybe a lot of things) that are outside of the *A-Frame-of-Reference*, but they can certainly outdo A-Frames on their own schtick.

But, as you, say, whatever.

(First Buggles album is outstanding, by the way. Second not so much. Never heard your fave raves Section 25.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

(Oh okay it was a joke because section 25 obviously have nothing to do with buggles in the same way that polysics obviously share no common ground whatsoever with a-frames. Got it, bro.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Tim, I honestly don't see a commonality at all, besides making music with guitars and drums in there somewhere.... no bullshit!

I'm trying to figure out how you're connecting the dots here. What is the A-Frames' "shtick"?

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

The verses of "I My Me Mine" could easily be an A-Frames song, no? Of course they've got the cute little diatonic refrains in there, too, but Polysics do a lot of that minimal, abstract, robotic riffing with harsh guitar and robot vocals.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

Or this one maybe:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrjJ4z1K-rQ

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

I don't hear the comparison at all. That's a pretty thin base to which to compare any two bands, much less accuse one of not taking the idea far enough.

Maybe you meant to say Polysics were five times better than Man Or Astro Man instead? (In that case, I'd agree with you.)

(implied IMHO/winkywinky/its-all-good-bro-ness here of course)

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

pretty thin base to which to compare any two bands

Not when that's all you do, as in the case of the A-Frames! (But yes, Polysics have lots more stuff going on, too.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

Subtract the harmonies, vocoder, awesome Boredeoms-ish vocals toward the end of the song, plus some energy and chops, then add uglier guitar tone and you have A-Frames song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjmf9pSXreQ

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

Subtract the harmonies, vocoder, awesome [Talk Talk]-ish vocals toward the end of the [Thom Yorke] song, plus some energy and chops, then add uglier [synth] tone and you have [recent Autechre] songs

...

Apples and oranges might make a great fruit salad idea, but it makes a terrible band comparison model.

I love both bands in this case, but I can play the same game and sum up Polysics in two words: Japanese Devo. Talk about a thin shtick. I love the shtick, but I think it's a pretty simple bare one, despite the number of things going on mechanically speaking, and how much it tickles my muscial pleasure centers.

Agree to disagree argument end non-shocker.

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:31 (nineteen years ago)

I can hear the Man or Astro-Man thing, too, sure, but a riff like the one in the peach pie song is what I'm talking about. That's not even Devo - more chromatic and minimal.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

Well, sure, and they have an early XTC-ish sounding song as well.

Otherwise:

liking one band and not another as much --> finding the latter inferior to the former.

liking both bands ---> hearing the bands as different entities.

I was hoping you might have found something I'd never thought of in comparison to the two bands, just as food for thought, but eh, not this time.

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, part of why I "found the latter inferior to the former" was that the former did so much more, stylistically, outside of that box. The other reason is that I think they do THAT THING - that thing they have in common - better: better chops, more energy and spirit, more inspiration, and better sound. In any case, I do think you're understating the extent to which *that thing* is pretty primary for both bands.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

um, no. They're completely different bands. A-Frames don't wear visors and suits, figuratively nor physically. They're just three guys who write dark yet not so serious rock/garage songs about bleakness with a Country Teasers influence more than anything. Polysics write about robot things, and live in Devo-land. Both do their things very well, but share nothing in common other than guitar, drums, and the occasional read of mechanics magazines (maybe.)

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Sunday, 20 August 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

But you made up your mind already when you revived this thread, so what's the point? Thanks for the YouTube links in any case.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, you should add tracklistings by Skinny Puppy, Man or Astro Man, Nomeansno, Devo, Alice Cooper's Flush The Fashion album, The Buggles, Billy Clone, Von LMO, Trans Am, Spiritualized, Tod Dockstader, Toy Dolls, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, and many others, but I don't want to ruin your A-Frames-are-an-inferior-take-on-Polysics trip here.

Thanks for the YouTube links! :D

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Sunday, 20 August 2006 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

Thing is, of the bands you listed that I have heard (and one can only GUESS with some of the others : D), none of them do the MINIMAL-CHROMATIC-robotic-new-wave-with-harsh-guitar-riff-rock-thing that A-Frames do all da time and Polysics also do a lot.

Farewell.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 August 2006 03:35 (nineteen years ago)

Don't go! You haven't my thing about how Pink Floyd's "The Nile Song" is five times more metal than "Black Sabbath" ;_;

I just saw these guys last night and it was one of the funnest most energetic shows I've ever seen! Bought the Polisics or Die!!! Vista double record and it sounds great!

New album "Oh! No! It's Heavy Polysick" out March 9. Cover is a collage of various people wearing Polysics sunglasses. Hidden in there are the three remaining members themselves. I really want to hear how they're getting on without Kayo. The tracklisting is typical Polysics awesomeness/craziness:

1 Heavy Polysick
2 Bleeping Hedgehog
3 Let's ダバダバ
4 Don't Cry
5 Jumping Up and Clash
6 Go to a Strange City
7 Cough Cough
8 Smile to Me
9 サブリミナル Cha-Cha-Cha
10 3 Point Time
11 Digital Dancing Zombie
12 Much Love Oh! No!
13 Have a Good Night

If you are a real fan please get their Budokan live performance, Kayo's last night as a member of the group, really great set that covered every album. They are insane live. Wish they'd come back around the States!!

btw; new album sounds a lot like Absolute Polysics, songwriting is kind of eyyyy, but the performances are great

frogbs, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

Still totally love their albums NEU and Hey! Bob! My Friend!

Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

they have a lot of really good albums now that I look - Hey! Bob!, Neu!, ENO, National P, Now is the Time!, and We Ate the Machine! are all worth a listen or ten

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

its surprising they have so many since they all basically sound alike

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

Well their later stuff went to japanese pop for me. They really rock on those two albums I mentioned.

Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah well Neu! definitely rocks the hardest but I don't think the later albums really suffered. Like, when I first got Now is the Time! I really was wondering where the heavy hitters were (outside of "Coelakanth"), but even their pop side is like 400% more manic and crazy than your average pop band, and in the end it's a really solid release with a lot of memorable tracks. We Ate the Machine! actually brings a lot of the craziness back and the single "Shout Aloud" rocks harder than anything else they've done save for "Urge On!!!".

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

Weeeeeeeeeee

Japan’s notorious boiler suited techno-new-wave hooligans POLYSICS return with Weeeeeeeeee!!!, their latest high-energy album, scheduled to shatter the eardrums of the UK and Europe from 10 June courtesy of JPU Records.

Following in the footsteps of their 15th anniversary release – which featured collaborations with a number of music legends, including the band’s personal hero, Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO – Weeeeeeeeee!!! sees the acclaimed outfit return with a mighty 17 tracks packed with fractured punk rock, vintage video game sound effects and the refreshing and quirky charm that only POLYSICS can muster.

ヘイシグ・ブローズ (MaresNest), Monday, 29 April 2013 09:59 (twelve years ago)

it's been out for a while in Japan. it's pretty good - better than their last two I'd say. pretty cool how they still pump these albums out like clockwork.

Action!!! - quite good!! Probably their best since, oh, I dunno, We Ate the Machine??? This band still rules.
