i kinda wanted to like the dude's last album but i remember it being on some bullshit

anyway i'm into this. it does this thing that i also really like about some songs on the grimes album which is hang r&b vocals in this midpoint between the ether and the forefront of the track. it's really kind of beguiling but i dig it... i feel like i want to reach out & grab these songs. i don't think i'll ever really be big on his whole aesthetic (the second to last track on here would be incredible but it goes for that loud and cavernous cheap reverb thing that i think sounds pretty shitty) but there's some real solid writing & singing that shines through on this.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 September 2012 17:40 (twelve years ago)

really looking forward to this, love the two tracks i've heard so far

I don't normally come into threads just to hate but HTDW is some of the most terrible fucking garbage-ass music I have ever heard. First post briefly got my hopes up that this was a troll thread.

I don't usually go in for music-as-catharsis but this stuff sounds so genuine and fucked up, it makes sense to me as hyper-depressed remembrances of a soul fan, the fragmented half-songs. I'm surprised too that anybody could hate it so much as they do, some friends are like "this is the worst ever" but I'm really feeling this and Elite Gymnastics as well

nabiscuits otm (Ówen P.), Friday, 14 September 2012 11:27 (twelve years ago)

i like the new how to dress well album as long as i stop listening before the last 4 or 5 tracks. it gets gloopy and there are some corny production + songwriting choices, the balance feels off.

I assumed this was where Mr. HTDW was from.

yeah i mean this is not a "fun" album but that's sort of inherently the point -- well "& it was you" is fun

johnny crunch, Saturday, 22 September 2012 04:10 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I saw this guy last night and he's basically the best. Tracks kick harder (and softer) than on record, and his vocal performance is out of this world. It's not just "oh yeah he has chops" but an abandon, he inhabits the shit he's singing, I was Moved. I can't think of another uh "real singer" who I like more, he sings without any trace of vanity. The record sounds crappy this morning in comparison.

The only bummer was the collage of film projections he put on each song. Kids jumping off bridges, "Julien Donkey-Boy" and stuff like that, nostalgia-baiting stuff.

Coco Rosie and Janet Jackson... hmmm, that explains why I can't make up my mind whether I like this or not

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:01 (twelve years ago)

He's moved beyond citing Coco Rosie I see:

But the first song on the record is a William Basinski homage, and the third song is a Steve Reich homage. To me, that doesn't quite line up with me being anyone's favorite R&B artist.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 16:25 (twelve years ago)

OK, I won't blame him for some of his fans listening to him but not r'n'b

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago)

See now you're just trying to start a fight

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 15:59 (twelve years ago)

It's just that I actually know someone who listens to this but not r'n'b and that bugs me for some reason. Why not both?

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 16:22 (twelve years ago)

hey curmudgeon i think you'll find this threat v interesting: ★ The Weeknd ★ What You Need ★

flopson, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago)

I have trouble believing that such a person exists but assuming they do I'd imagine he or she is a rare species

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago)

Really, flamboyant goon? You're kidding, aren't you. I'm guessing you might want to check out that Weeknd thread also.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago)

I don't think Weeknd = HTDW. The HTDW show I saw last week in TO had a diverse indie/non-indie crowd singing along to dude's R Kelly cover and discussing "The Velvet Rope", lyrics from which appear on HTDW's shirt. Not necessarily finger-on-the-pulse R&B fans, perhaps, but I'd object to generalizing suggestions of his fanbase wearing cultural blinders. Further suggestion that artist is somehow responsible for his fanbase and specifics of their musical education? I'm not on that team.

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago)

I haven't read the Weeknd thread though as I am not a fan, could you summarize, I'm serious I'm curious, I'm not trying to argue argue I just really like this guy both on record and in print.

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago)

Really, flamboyant goon?

r|t|c, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago)

Oh jeez is this another "Americans with computers like to resent other Americans with computers" scene that I'm always removing bookmarks from

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:54 (twelve years ago)

No. I really do know someone who listens to HTDW but not r'n'b and such people are not rare in my experience.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago)

most of the people i know who like this don't listen to much in the way of r&b. tbh i'm happy to have bad impressions about his music cuz i've heard through trustworthy sources that he's a srsly disingenuous dick.

Perfect Chicken Forever (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 11 October 2012 00:35 (twelve years ago)

Even assuming that every HTDW fan listens to exactly zero R&B and he is a disingenuous dick-- both debatable facts, my impression of the man has been super positive but who gives a shit-- three songs on this record make me hot and he put on a truly great show, like top 5 of year

flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 11 October 2012 01:07 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah, no doubt if i hear the album more and come to dig it these facts and pseudo-facts and non-facts won't matter to me, but for now i enjoy backing up my unreasonable opinions with ~SCIENCE~.

Perfect Chicken Forever (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 11 October 2012 01:14 (twelve years ago)

Although I must admit "he's a dick and his fans don't listen to real R&B" is an evocative ten word dismissive, respect

two weeks pass...

Arriving months late to another convo, but I finally caught up with this, so...

Honestly, the vocals aside (which range from "too much" on the falsetto parts to "exquisitely pretty" on the parts where he sings normal, for me), this really doesn't sound enough like R&B to me warrant the same kinda conversation that we always seem to be having about The Weeknd. Like, I can more than get how this would appeal to a non-R&B listener, just as I can certainly get how an R&B fan would hate this; this guys music is quite a bit further down the rabbit hole than any other PBR&B (or whatever we wanna call it) I have heard.

he needs to do a duet with jessie lanza. it would be like the underground alt-R&B version of all those big popstar duets happening these days.

thanks for that

i'm liking the quiet, peaceful new HDTW songs. i also heard a popular indie song on the radio by james vincent mcmorrow and was struck by how much it was influenced by total loss. the mcmorrow song was actually quite nice. kind of the mainstreamization of HDTW sound, provided you distinguish between HDTW and james blake.

I love "Repeat Pleasure," which was the source of some expected controversy (in addition to some not-so-expected indifference) over at The Singles jukebox today.
