More a general band thread than one dedicated to this specific album, but since it's just out (their second full-length), I figured I might as well tie it in. I love The Limiñanas*! Effortlessly lazy retro pop laced with organ drones, tambourines, catchy basslines, twangy guitars, and bored-sounding boy/girl vocals. Recommended to people who like to wear sunglasses and look really cool while smoking cigarettes.

* Their name is properly spelled with a tilde over the first N, but I left that out of the thread title in case it messes up searches. And they don't seem to pronounce it anyway, so...

a couple more tracks off their self-titled debut LP, which i've had a bit more time to absorb (came out in 2010):

I have the I'm Dead 7" which is pretty great but I never checked out anything else by them yet. Should probably rectify that.
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)
you definitely should. "i'm dead" is GREAT, and it caused me to underrate their debut LP a little, but in retrospect, it's one of my favorite albums of 2010.

Found the new album diverting for a while but it's way pastichey and I just go back to my Gainsbourg soundtracks in the end. "Hospital Boogie" is probably my favourite, even if it sounds like a Beta Band knockoff.

They covered "I Know There's an Answer" on a Mojo Magazine Beach Boys tribute covermount CD a few months ago and it rules.
And this 7" is really fantastic too:

Think I might be missing a 7", but got the rest. Love them. Undeniably pastichey, but what the hell.
― Wandering Boy Poet, Thursday, 13 September 2012 11:46 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, exactly. their sound may be a pastiche, but "french retro-60s garage pop" isn't a crowded field these days, so i'm okay with it.

They're not really what I'd consider a breakthrough sort of band but everyone who I've played them to seem to love them at first listen.
I remember playing 'je suis une go go girl' at the outloud ilxor room months ago and even the metal dudes who hated everything that wasn't prog or metal we're into it.
― Moka, Friday, 14 September 2012 05:31 (thirteen years ago)
just listened to a few le pécheur tracks. they're doing something a bit different, imo. the sound is darker, noisier, more closely tied to heavy throwback psych rock and contemporary lo fi sonics. somewhere between retro pop, "shitgaze" and a black angels demo. singing and songwriting are a lot less appealing, too.
liminanas are as close to candy-coated modernist stuff like pizzicato 5, stereolab and april march as they are to grubby garage rock. kitschy but not quite cloying. to the extent that they do scan "rock", i associate them with the likes of the raveonettes, holly golightly and darklands-era jesus and mary chain: clean, orderly, catchy and rather simplistic (in a good way).

loving this band so hard. so catchy, so cool. chocolate in my milk is such a great song. really cool album structures too, with the instrumentals and the recurring motifs and exotic instruments and whatnot. one thing i will say, this isn`t really meant as a criticism, but the two albums sound very similar? doesn't sound like they progressed, or maybe, more likely, they are determined to make a very specific type of music.
anyway this band is great. <3
― marc iv, Friday, 21 September 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)
They really capture this stiff, squared-off feel to the beats in yé-yé that doesn't come through in other bands that toy with the influence. It's hard to recreate that showbiz studio musician feel after decades of rock rocking harder.

I've always liked this band, but underrated them. Some of the strongest guitar rock of the last dozen years. "I'm Dead" is as perfect as this kind of music can get.

been listening to & thinking about this band a lot lately. maybe cuz stereolabe poll, i dunno.
― mandatory sex webinar (contenderizer), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 19:41 (nine years ago)
The new album is an achievement in how well they've optimized themselves and their sound. Every song is so "them" that all twelve songs pass by in one 70min long blur. Every song is the same because because you can just listen to it as one long piece. Of course I love love love this stuff. I can only find interviews of them in French, but machine-translated Lionel Limiñana keeps referring to the importance of "The Riff." I can't think of a better philosophy to life.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 April 2016 05:42 (nine years ago)
Just found these guys and love them. It's so great finding a new band and then they already have 4 really good albums out. I'm buying the hard copies of all four since they are albums I play from start to finish.

I've been enjoying this kinda similar band lately. Also French, a little noisier.

I went to see the Liminanas last night. It was louder, rougher, wilder, trippier and altogether 'bigger' than I expected. Seven members on stage, for a start. More riffage, more percussive and less sweet than I thought.

I love how the Liminanas, as a duo, are inherently collaborative, and somehow leave their kosmi-yeye stamp on everything while letting Newcombe (et al) do his thing too.
― bendy, Thursday, 26 September 2019 15:26 (six years ago)
Like, blending with Pascal Comelade's wistful toy instruments, both artists' mojo intact, not to mention the Cramps and the original Green Fuz
