Always vote Roy Ayers when it's an option.

Ham Lushbaugh (Eric H.), Saturday, 15 September 2012 04:12 (thirteen years ago)

i was going to vote roy ayers but skeeter davis convinced me otherwise.

lord sitar and peter gunz (get bent), Saturday, 15 September 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

It was tough narrowing Roy down to a single album, but that's the tightest one (under the "Ubiquity" name anyway).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 September 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, I would urge anyone not familiar with Skeeter Davis's mid-60s output to get familiar, and quickly. That's a great album to start with. (It's not on Spotify, but there's good hits comp on there.)

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 September 2012 04:16 (thirteen years ago)

lot of great choices here but my gut tells me Sex Packets is the morally right one

fadanuf4erybody, Saturday, 15 September 2012 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

Diana Ross gets my vote. Massive Attack and Róisín Murphy would be close behind.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 15 September 2012 09:59 (thirteen years ago)

loveless, the third vu album, mezzanine, the 1st weezer. difficult choice. i'd say it's lou reed & mates with their best one.

Mark G, Saturday, 15 September 2012 10:32 (thirteen years ago)

I only know a couple of albums here. one was ehhhh, the other was Illmatic.

the show must goon (some dude), Saturday, 15 September 2012 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

Voted Highway To Hell just to make sure AC/DC got some much deserved love.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 15 September 2012 12:32 (thirteen years ago)

Damn, this is a hard one.

The Velvet Underground, The Velvet Underground (1969)
Shuggie Otis, Freedom Flight (1971)
My Bloody Valentine, Loveless (1991)
Róisín Murphy, Overpowered (2007)
Diana Ross, Diana (1980)

atari era stylings of (seandalai), Saturday, 15 September 2012 12:47 (thirteen years ago)

1. The Velvet Underground, 2. Never Mind the Bollocks, 3. Leader of the Pack (which I don't have, but on the strength of its three singles).

― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, September 15, 2012 6:05 AM

Why lol? It's really good. Some of the other BBP! stuff is iffy, but not this album.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 September 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

Shuggie Otis's best album wins it. Skeeter Davis does deserve to be heard, but beyond the amesome title cut that album isn't the best way (there isn't a good comp I know of, ut check out the album she made with NRBQ). Some are too obvious (Pistols, VU, Loveless) - you've already heard them. At least two EBTG albums are essential but not Idlewild.

Lee626, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

Some of my favorites are canon, some aren't. That's what makes one-person lists more funner imo.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

I think Isolee takes it over Blonde Redhead and a nostalgia vote for Jale. Although, I don't have that particular XTC comp, but a comp of XTC singles up to '82 has to be in with a shot too. Maybe that's cheating?

Not that it matters as the most overrated album of my lifetime is on this list and is probably going to win even if barely anyone mentions it onthread, sigh ILM.

still small voice of clam (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

this is a really hard one but i can't not vote Velvets. "Jesus" is magnificent! the murder mystery doesn't quite work but in their entire wee oeuvre that's one of the only ones that doesn't. today i'd even say i think their stuff generally holds up better than dylan's

It's funny. With XTC comps, the first part never changed. Compact XTC just added on post-82 songs, and then Fossil Fuel just added on post-86 songs, but the core contained on Waxworks never changed (and it's the tightest part of their catalogue imo).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

Waxworks/Beeswax (sold as a shrinkwrapped pair when I got them) is a fantastic intro to the band.

Irwin Dante's Towering Inferno (WmC), Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

number 130 is the greatest album ever, so that. but many wonderful amazing albums on this list.

running like a young deer (symsymsym), Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

Such an interesting list, wish I could hear more of them on my non-existant budget. I guess I could patiently hunt around the wikipedia/youtube connection axis, except hearing things out of my computer is like tasting little plastic cups of nibbles at a grocery store.

Amongst ones I know, OAR and the 3rd VU album would duke it out mightily, as I loved both for years --- but should I therefore vote for one of them in this poll, when I'm so ignorant of so many of the rest? Noticing that there's something here from Gilberto that I've never heard (LOVE his 68 self-titled) --- what if that's the greatest damn thing ever? What if something by "Demon Fuzz" was released in 1970 that was the greatest thing ever? I feel my old acquisition-of-music self rising from slumber just reading this.

Hey, what's the El Chicano album like, anything like "Tell Her She's Lovely"? (A song I really admire). Indulge ME.

Vic Perry, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

Basically, I would recommend everybody investigate every title on this list, except I'd understand some pushback on the EBtG album (it's probably not objectively great, but it's tied up in some favorite memories).

Demon Fuzz was a heavy groove band from London made of African immigrants, equal parts acid rock, funk, jazz and psyche. They only released one album, but it's a goodie.

A lot of the El Chicano albums are really similar, so yeah. If you're into "Tell Her She's Lovely" you'd like this one as well. This is the only track I could find from it on youtube, but the whole thing is percussive and fluid like "I'm a Good Woman".

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

And to that end, if you've never heard the Lafayette Afro Rock Band, you've at least heard the hook of this track sampled about a zillion times (but all of their stuff is quality):

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yes. I just KNEW if somebody in 1970 had thought of the name "Demon Fuzz" it would turn out to be a great band. Thanks so much!

Vic Perry, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

do you like Manu Dibango's Atlantic release Soul Makossa?

Vic Perry, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:42 (thirteen years ago)

(I understand the CD releases of Soul Makossa are not the same thing at all)

Vic Perry, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

VU vs Sleigh Bells vs Nas

System, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

Personally I would have chosen 'Loaded' instead of 'Velvet Underground'. Only song I really care about in the self titled album is 'Sunday Morning'.

There's so many favorite albums in these JF polls that I can't make up my mind to vote in any of them so I'll just lurk around.

JF: Please do make a spotify playlist with one or two selections per album as a sample.

Moka, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 00:54 (thirteen years ago)

Oh wait! This is THE velvet underground album. Thought we were talking about VU & Nico which is seriously overrated. This choice I can get behind.

Moka, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

I did make a playlist for 87 of the first 100: http://open.spotify.com/user/mondosalvo/playlist/0BqTjSTbllfzhgxa3A8z21

I'll make another for the second hundred.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

If you'd gone with Shangri La's '65 I might have voted for that. Can't quite get behind LOTP however, even though the singles are peerless.

So Bollocks it is.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta vote for that Donny Hathaway album, because no one else probably will. Dude was a soul genius on the level of Curtis Mayfield, with a voice as smooth as Nat King Cole's:

Tuomas, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

jf: that's perfect! missed on that one the first time around. thanks!

I could vote for any of these:

0103 - Alexander "Skip" Spence, Oar (1969)
0106 - Loveage, Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By (2001)
0109 - The Velvet Underground, The Velvet Underground (1969)
0111 - Skeeter Davis, The End of the World (1963)
0113 - Róisín Murphy, Overpowered (2007)
0115 - My Bloody Valentine, Loveless (1991)
0116 - Clarence Carter, This Is Clarence Carter (1968)
0117 - The Lafayette Afro Rock Band, Darkest Light: The Best of The Lafayette Afro Rock Band (1999)
0122 - Massive Attack, Mezzanine (1998)
0125 - The Shangri-Las, Leader of the Pack (1965)
0128 - Roy Ayers Ubiquity, Lifeline (1977)

Is this the first poll in which Loveless was eligible that it didn't win?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 September 2012 00:44 (thirteen years ago)

I really wished I had voted for Police and Thieves; I thought about it, but I was too embarrassed by how many of these I haven't heard yet. I mean, I could go at any time...
